JustRob
I mean think about it. GTAIII came in 2001, then 2002 the next year immediately Vice City, 2 years later San Andreas, and 2 more years later Liberty City Stories. Next year, Vice City Stories. Compare that to now. GTAIV was released in 2008, and finally this year (5 years later!!!) we get a new GTA on the console. Rockstar really dropped the ball imo. Magic_Al
It takes a lot more time to create an HD game world with the quality they want. If you look at how many people are credited as map artists for GTA IV compared to San Andreas, they had to add a lot of people even though the map is smaller. They can't just add more people and get done faster because a bigger project gets harder to control.
Showstopper 26
Agreed. If they don't launch by the end of May, it'll be a complete embarrassment.
Forzum
Yeah but now they do A LOT more detalis, graphics etc, it's much more work now then it was to create 3/VC/SA, and IV also had the 2 DLC that came out. It's not like they have "dropped the ball" it's quite obvious that it takes longer for them to create a GTA in this & next era than in the ps2 era. And besides they have said that they do not want to release a GTA every year or so, which is a good idea, because then the series would fail and lack changes. Darkshade12
I don't think a HD game that's bigger than RDR, IV and SA combined can be finished in just a year or two.

Don_Corleone
I prefer R* to take their time and try to make the game as good as possible. Not just bring out a game every year or so with little changes to it like fifa/cod/ect.

It's called patience. I've been hyped for V since 2010 really, yet you don't see me complaining. And what difference would the date make? Spider-Vice
It doesn't have to do with dropping the ball, it has to do with engine. III era GTA's were made in Renderware, an engine developed by a completely different company, so they just scripted the story, made the models, textures, the game core and it's done. Now Rockstar is making RAGE as they develop future GTA's and they need to adapt it to their necessities and improve it as needed. Plus, as details in games are more and more, development time also rises. Proteus1
Vice city took only 9 months to make and GTA 4 took 4 years (right after SA). This shows how much time it takes to create a HD game. This means GTA V has been in development for 5 years. And btw vcs and lcs used the same maps from gta3 and vice city, used a lot of the same cars. They only had to update the map, new missions, soundtrack, missions and so on= so a lot less work than SA or GTA4.

Andreas
Just to show a complete list of GTA games that Rockstar has released since the original game. GTA: 1997 GTA II: 1999 GTA III: 2001 GTA Vice City: 2002 GTA San Andreas: 2004 GTA Advance: 2004 GTA Liberty City Stories: 2006 GTA Vice City Stories: 2007 GTA IV: 2008 GTA Chinatown Wars: 2009 GTA Episodes from Liberty City: 2009 GTA V: 2013 There are several reasons for this. It is much harder to create a whole gameworld in HD and current generations consoles are obviously much harder and more complexe coded than the previous generation(s). The Grand Theft Auto series is mainly developed by Rockstar North. Rockstar North developed the game Agent from 2007 until late 2009 or anytime in 2010 and the game is either cancelled or an exclusive game for the next PlayStation. The fact that Rockstar North worked on Agent which was supposed to be released in 2010, tells us that Agent must have been the bigger priority, even if it has been confirmed that GTA V is in development since 2008. This studio also helped Team Bondi in the last three years in the development of L.A. Noire. As if this is not enough, they helped Rockstar San Diego in the development of Red Dead Redemption and they helped Rockstar Vancouver in the development of Max Payne 3. It doesn't have to do with dropping the ball, it has to do with engine. III era GTA's were made in Renderware, an engine developed by a completely different company, so they just scripted the story, made the models, textures, the game core and it's done. Renderware was a customizable engine and an engine that a lot of developers used for different games and different genres. It's not that simple like you said. Rockstar had a lot of work to customize the engine to their need exactly like they have to do now with RAGE. That is a debatable point and we could argue whether it is more simple to customize an engine that is provided by another company or an engine that was created by themselves and where they already have a lot of experience. yes the early 2000s were great for gta fans! 2001 gta 3 - first 3d gta and a classic! 2002 vice city - enough said! 2004 - san andreas - bigger, louder, more action than ever! but then it went downhill... lc stories and vice city stories were steps back. not good games in my opinion. kind of recycled gta 3 and vice city. I think that you don't know much about the GTA series, do you? GTA Liberty City Stories and GTA Vice City Stories were both handheld games. They were developed for the PlayStation Portable systems and then later ported to PlayStation 2. These games were never supposed to surpass GTA III and GTA Vice City respectively. That were just handheld GTAs and not 'major' GTAs. The following games can be considered as 'major' GTAs: GTA, GTA II, GTA III, GTA Vice City, GTA San Andreas, GTA IV and obviously GTA V; Edited January 11, 2013 by Carl CJ Johnsons Brother Brian GTAForums Crew Chat Thread - The Sharks Chat Thread - Leone Family Mafia Chat Thread

It still is different. Even though the developers could change Renderware as they wished, it was an already developed engine. Rockstar built RAGE by themselves and I'm sure they're still perfecting it a lot, and that does take time compared to introducing new features in another pre-made engine. JustRob
Still, the HD era has been around for some years now. And after GTAIV, you'd say they got the hang of it. There's no reason for it to take so long.

JustRob
Those weren't as detailed or realistic like the PS3 and Xbox 360 ones. Back then they were the best they could do, and since the technology was not as advanced at that time, I'm pretty sure making GTA:SA was just as hard to make back then as it is to make GTAV now. Three years is a good amount of time so it doesn't get stale like a yearly release but doesn't take freaking 5+ years either. It's quite embarrassing for a developer of this level. Dick Valor
Has R* dropped the ball? This era has taken longer, certainly, but I'd take IV, RDR, and V over III, VC, and SA any day. How do I know that when V hasn't come out yet? Let's see... sharks, submarines, dogs, Los Santos (my fav), countryside and marine environments, silenced weapons, heist missions (plural!), jets/planes, bicycles, parachutes in the vanilla game, tennis and golf (finally!), dynamic missions (e.g., stealing bank trucks), biggest R* map ever--and that's just off the top of my head! V will be well worth the wait.
killahmatic
Rockstar really dropped the ball imo. You're just trying to get attention, and the quote above proves it. I'll let everyone else explain the obvious reason why it takes longer to make games now, than it did in the III era.
