Surely, he doesn't do that.. and drug organizations? Eh, let the CG handle that.. give 'em something to be proud of wink.gif

anyways, found this post by OP in 'Hardest thing you've done' topic, found it amusing.

Burying nine of my closest friends that were also U.S. Marines, i still remember the gun salute and all the wives....I miss them...

I would rather go into San Franciso and offer free BJ's, tell the taliban U.S. launch codes, and Bring Osama back to life rather than have to do that sh*t again.

Hardest physical? Carrying a wounded soldier 5 miles to an outpost even after taking a bullet myself, he lived.....or getting kicked in the dick by my buddy after pranking him....good times johnny....i think he is a Porshe dealership owner nowadays.....

Im just gonna post this so that people can be educated on the Coast Guard and not make mis informed statements.

Unlike the other branches of service the Coast Guard saves lives rather than taking them. We are stationed on OUR SOIL where it matters. Our missions include drug and law enforcement interdiction, migrant interdiction, and search and rescue. This means that we prevent drug smuggling across our water ways and air space, prevent illegal immigrants from making it to shore, prevent illegal fishing operations, but most importantly we save lives.

No while I dont personally agree with my countries war against drugs and our immigration laws, I have done some amazing things while being in. I have aided in the seizure of over 3 million dollars worth of pure cocaine, I have participated in numerous rescue operations that saved the lives of fisherman, cruise line passengers, scuba divers, as well as citizens of the bahamian islands.

The Coast Guard was insurmountably sucessful after the events of hurricane katrina, saving thousands of lives.

When Haiti was hit with the earth quake I was attached to the unit that was first on scene. We medivac'd hundreds of Haitian citizens to get medical attention and out of harms way.

"Surely, he doesnt do that"--- Yes I surely do. "And drug organizations?"--- Yes drug organizations. Do you think that these smugglers are all just going to give us the dope they are carrying. We have to chase them done, and even avoid gun fire to seize their vessels.

Now Im only saying all this because you have questioned my cridentials and you have eluded to the un-importance of the Coast Guard.

What does the earthquake in Haiti have to do with anything relating to Afghanistan?

Considering the OP did not fight in Afghanistan it's a moot point.

But deffpony was merely stating that he witnessed awful things when he responded to the Haiti crisis and therefore shouldn't be called a 'pussy' by this fictional 'soldier' who fought in a fictional battle and lost fictional friends.

This Exactly. I was trying to tell OP that theres no need to act like what military people have done is better than anyone else. I have done some tough and dangerous sh*t as well, but I dont use it as an excuse to squash the credibility of everyone else

I'm sat here with this thread open in one tab and reading up on the history of smuggling boats in another tab, it references the CG and the evolution of how they changed to both stop smuggling, and the arms race they are in with the smugglers. Very, very interesting stuff and it's amazing the levels both sides go to in order to beat the other.

I didn't question your credentials.. I questioned your experience to what he had to say, though he lied about his service, the fact remains. Your experience as a barnacle scrubber has sh*t to do with that of Afghanistan and the daily events that take place in the lives of Marines, Army and other armed forces.

Do I dislike Coast Guard?, no.. I rather think they do a splendid job in saving the lives of fishermen caught in rough seas and capsized boats and all that.. like one poster said, "Someone has to do it.." but you have no authority on that of Infantry.. opinions, sure.. but you can't say you understand where he comes from when in actuality, you don't.

Seems to me he has a hell of a lot more understanding than you do. Or are a member of some branch of the military you haven't disclosed?

I take it your tenure with the US Coast Guard didn't last long? Each branch dishes out it's ridicule for each other.. it's how we roll. It's still a brotherhood.. C'mon, you can't tell me you've never heard that term..

How about.. puddle pirate? brown water Navy? .. ffs man. I remember hearing a guy say, "damn you're short, I thought you had to be atleast six feet tall to get into the CG? Well, I guess if your boat sinks you can just walk back to shore." to a coastie one time.

or the infamous, You might be a coastie joke.. Good times, good times.

You might be a coastie if...

After boot camp, you've never fired a gun

it lasted 6 years, and yes I have heard all the "jokes" and from fellow service members its fine, but you have to understand that when you say sh*t like that without me knowing where your coming from its easy to think your some dumb kid sitting at home playing COD and jerking off with a bag of cheetos

We're all kids to some level. I'm a former US Marine myself, I did my time. So when I noticed you were CG, I had the radar beeping and had to dial in. wink.gif

I know what the CG is capable of.. just didn't see the comparison of war torn Afghanistan versus the Haiti earthquake crisis (From a military point of view of course), but I understand the devastating effects that happened over there in Haiti, alot of Marines were sent in for aid. Although some cheetos do sound good though.. won't lie.

We get our fair share of sh*t talked to us.. I find humor in it though. I have one friend, but I rarely talk to him.. he went into the CG afew years back, a "new start" on life I guess. Seems to be doing well.. he seems gungho about it.

Triple Vacuum Seal

Surely, he doesn't do that.. and drug organizations? Eh, let the CG handle that.. give 'em something to be proud of wink.gif

Al Qaeda (who the beloved Army and Marines fight) is a drug organization too you know. All of that money to purchase arms and train followers doesn't just fall from the sky or from the occasional terror-supporting financier. Opium and even Marijuana are cultivated to keep them afloat. That's why the DEA is in the middle east too.

Drug cartels from South and Central America are actually more dangerous than most small armies and "insurgents" around the world. I never said he was Deployable Ops, but to bash a serviceman and their entire branch just because they don't shoot their way out of some hollywood-styled D-Day war zone is kind of ignorant. Even within the Army and Marine Corps, most servicemen nowadays never have to experience what the OP claims to have experienced. I see your point that military experience varies and so does the respect, but CG bashing as an entire branch doesn't do the elite forces within the CG justice.

Edit: If you're USMC, then you're good. Thought you were some kid.

hollywood-styled D-Day war zone

/longassrant

Therin lies the problem. I already mentioned this to deff in a PM, but...thought I'd expand on it too.

The media treats the military one of two ways (and yes, where I am we get a lot of US programs and movies, well...given the sh*t the BBC is in currently you can't expect them to make their own programs, and the MoD here isn't as open about letting people do shows and movies and stuff around the military here, the most obvious excepton is Ross Kemp's two shows in Afghanistan with the UK military).

The US media treats the military one of two ways for TV and movies, and one way and one way only for games (nearly all of the time).

First off, you get the patriotic USA saves the day spiel from Hollywood, they disarm the nuke, save the girl, ride off into the sunset to the Star Spangled Banner.

That is wrong on so, SO many levels. I'm sorry, but just because the big film studios tend to dramatize and romanticize war, it doesn't make it right. There's been a list done of how Hollywood percieves WWII to have gone, it's both sad and unintentionally funny at the same time. Examples that are oft-quoted: US pilots win the Battle of Britain in Mustangs. US navy captures Enigma machines. US were the sole forces in Normandy.

It is wrong. It pretty much gives the US and the rest of the world that gets US media, a slanted view.

Or, secondly, you get the TV show/movie focusing on a foreign conflict, and there's nearly always a US soldier attached to whatever army or navy or air force or special forces unit the show or film focuses on.

That also is wrong, though (and no offense to anyone in this thread apart from the OP) there's Americans out there who actually believe every unit has a US soldier attached to it.

Then....there's games. My personal pet hate.

Games go out of their way to make war seem 'cool' and 'fun' and 'exciting'. Anyone apart from me see the problem with that, with glamorizing war and twisting it into something it isn't? Oh, and in most war games, it's always the good ol' USA that saves the day (yeah, I know, the majority of studios are American but....)

I hate it. I hate the fact cat CEOs who sign off on making the latest CoD game or Battlefield game or latest generic manshooter XVICLMXVIIIII that will get 95% reviews, yet portray war as something fun and exciting.

Like I said to Deff, I have a friend in the Army who is in intelligence. He has said on several occasions he's had kids turn up thinking war is like a game and asking completely the wrong questions their first few days.

IMO if any kid is thinking that war is like a video game...this is what needs to happen. Money and time no object:

Send them around Europe for a long period of time, send them to Ypres to see the war graves, chain them to the ground with their arms at their sides as the Last Post is played at dusk. Put them in Croatia for a month to see the damage caused by that war, make them listen to veterans of the Bosnian war, who have lost limbs and can't afford or can't get artificial limbs.

Have them (and this is the bit I'm not proud of saying) go to the Holocaust museums in DC and the camp in Auschwitz, to learn about the real human cost of war and what it does to people. Not learning it from a game that somebody dreamed up, but learn it from real world events and history. That war is a horrific, awful thing and not something 'cool' or 'fun'

Maybe then those kids in Mike's boot camp won't be mouthing off asking how the spec ops differs from CoD (yes, he's heard that, and he said he wasn't at liberty to tell his answer, but it wasn't pretty), or that the military's 'cool' and 'fun'.

Maybe then the game designers would treat war with the maturity it deserves, instead of a throw away plaything. Name me one war game that treats war with a mature, adult look at it and a mature, adult discussion about it, instead of appealing to 12 year old kids?

If anyone does, I will go look up said war game.

Your talking about how you hate games that glamourise war yet your on a forum for GTA...

GTA doesn't glamorize war though at all.

If I said I hate games that glamorize crime, it'd be ironic that I was on a GTA forum. But GTA is not a war game, it does not portray war as something cool or fun.

Let's see.

LCS: Vic was in the military and got discharged because of not wanting to get involved in drugs.

IV: Niko was in the military and that was used as backstory.

EFLC: Luis's father (I think) was in the military. I could be wrong on that, but I distinctly remember there being a photo of a soldier in his safehouse.

So, how is that glamorizing war then? IV had it played out as dark and gritty, EFLC had it in emails with a choice of reaction.

It glamourises killing the same as war games glamourise it so the fact that one is in the crime genre and the other in the shooter genre is moot. The majority of GTA IV is about killing people and if it wasn't fun you wouldn't be playing it. Your claiming that games that glamourise war are bad because they make it seem like this hollywood esque style shooter where you gun down people without any remorse like Rambo. That's exactly what you do in GTA. Whether it's in a crime situation or a war situation killing is still glamourised in games and it's this killing you seem to take offence against.

Once again I never claimed any other service, and I never claimed a fallen brother schtick either. I know your probably just an ignorant kid who has no idea what your talking about but while you were at home grabbing your dick to a picture of Justin Bieber, I was deployed, saving lives and serving my country.

Don't get me wrong. What I did is no where near as tough as combat. I had the greatest job on earth. But I went months without seeing family and friends. I have spent 3 thanks givings, 4 new years, and 4 Christmases deployed either out at sea or in some stinky barrack.

Where were you stationed if you don't mind my asking?

My home port was Naval Base San Diego. I seen a lot of the Coast Guard while I was there. Even shared a pier with a few Coast Guard vessels. The entire time I was on my various three to six month shore rotations I never seen any of you guys head out for more then about a month at a time.

After getting back from two nine monthers and one six month deployment it made me kinda jealous. tounge.gif

Floating around Asia and the Middle East in a tin can is a hot smelly way to spend X months at a time. We did the whole search and seizure bit too. Africa and pirates and all that. I was pretty disappointed though. Totally shattered my view of pirates. Still, those bastards were resourceful. Likely still are, I haven't been out that way in a while, obviously.

Anyway, rambling.

So because I dont give you the full respect you think you deserve I'm just a kid at home pulling his dick over justin bieber... Yeah it's this attitude that got you here in the first place. Also what's funny is how when forum members call you out on it you react like an ass but when a mod does so you just reply with lol.

That said I'm sure you had a really tough job and have saved many many lives and are a service to your country and should be given many many medals. You are better than us civilians in every way and I'm sure you have a massive penis. Happy now?
