Mister Pink
We all play games differently depending on our experience with them. Some of you will have used cheats the first time you played GTA's story. Now you wont. What habit or style of playing have you done in the past but now as a more experienced player will not do in the future? I had a topic about turning the GPS mapping system off. Simply, I wasn't looking at the scenery, the locations and remembering the routes, I was looking at the HUD, not learning the map and just following a green line. My personal challenge will be to turn off the GPS. I'll see the map in the HUD and I will make some mistakes but I will follow the blip but learn the landscape and the roads in front of me. What will you do or change that you used to do in the past? RUBBΣR░J♢HNNY (スオッ)
Jordan_Philip
I usually like to keep killing everyone to a minimum when i first start a gta. Ill stick to that routine
vivalavendredi
I always wanted to have 2 savegames. One for the story… one for role playing and free roaming. I tried that always but mixed it later and then had a game with "cheats" in it, so the 100% wasn't possible anymore

reform
Yeah I'm on the "No GPS" Bus too. I think the only thing I;m going to do that I havn't done before is turn autosave off and save games rotationally so that I'll have lots of versions of the game at past points that I can return to should I need or want to. I was kinda shocked when I replayed GTA SA last month that I still recognised so much of the map. I don't feel like I know a lot about the city/map of GTA IV. Brazilian Mermaid
sounds like a good idea. all streets in GTA IV have names and the signs around the roads may help you to locate yourself.
Marlo-Lionches
I always wanted to just do what first comes into my head. For example when i first played gta iv, if somebody bumped into my car, my first instinct was to get out and shoot them in the head, but I would always decide not too, as I didn't want the police after me, and maybe end up dying. As I didn't want to have loads of deaths on the stats screen. So in this next one, I always want to do the first thing that pops into my head. I think it may happen this time as their is 3 charcaters, So with Trevor I can just do whatever I want, and with Micheal I can keep level headed. But instead of shooting them I just kick their car and drive away. Its funny seeing them get all pissed and get out of their car to kick your ass
Deffpony
I too will turn off the GPS this time around. I will also try to be more story focused this time around. Usually When I play GTA's I just play whatever mission I can and gradually progress. But this Time I am going to try and focus on one set of missions at a time, so that my relationship with that character doesnt seem sparatic. So if I were to do this in IV I would do all the Vlad missions, then Do all the Jacob Missions. Of course there reaches a point where you cant do one without the other, but I will try and stay as consistant as possible
Remi749
I remember when playing GTA IV for the first time, after the conversation with Roman, I accidentally reversed the car and into the water at the docks, that was my big moment xD after that I did about 10 missions, and then figured out to try and break havoc in the streets, by killing some cops and acquiring guns and so on... I will try to complete more of the story this time around, before exploring and doing havoc, but I don't know. I haven't really thought about it, but will look for submarines and try diving if that is possible from the get-go. GTA_stu
That GPS thing sounds good, I might have a go at that. I did kinda feel like I wasn't learning the map with IV, and that I was just following the green or yellow line on the mini map rather than using my own knowledge of the streets. I might also avoid using taxis or other forms of quick travel, that should help with learning the map as well. I think I'd still have the map on, but I would just take the lines off that show you the best route to take. With such a supposedly big map it might take quite a while travelling across it without using quick travel, so that might be tedious interesting. Something that I've never really done in past GTA's is picking up the random weapons that are scattered across the map, and I'll carry on that way in V as well. I didn't even really know any locations of weapons off by heart in IV, I knew the molotovs on the boardwalk and that was about it.

Of course there reaches a point where you cant do one without the other, but I will try and stay as consistant as possible I know how you feel. Vice City was the first game I actively did as you are going to do with regards to storyline. Before that GTA was to chaotic for me. Too chaotic for me to follow the story and free-roam was too tempting to f*ck around in. So I played Vice City properly and although I loved GTA, Vice City was when I first completed a GTA story, properly. Man, you will love it. It's worth going back and doing SA like that too. It really is. Trick is, you can actually get through the story nicely if you do it in chunks and it will be nice and coherent for you. Before you used to have to go and manually save at a safe house. Now it auto-saves so you can just start the next mission right away. A good idea is to plan on getting to a certain plot point, where you know that the story will change or it's a new 'chapter.' then save and do all your rampaging and messing around. I used to play SA. I'd go through some missions and cash endeavours. If a mission was pissing me off I'd do some collectibles or side missions to earn cool stuff. Then when that got boring, I'd explore, go on rampages etc. I'd usually leave free-roaming rampages as a sort of desert. That way, I'm experiencing the game throughout the missions and the game doesn't get too familiar and boring because I did too much free-roaming and I'm used to the place but now I've to do missions. Dick Valor
It's cool to see you guys are trying to approach IV and past GTAs in a more engaged, less "sporadic" manner. Personally, I try to find a balance between a structured/OCD playthrough and an organic one. It mainly involves playing to the story and the character. I don't find it terribly sporadic or unnatural to take a break from certain mission givers if the protag doesn't like them. For example, when I play the first part of IV, I honor Niko's goal of going straight and try to focus on supporting Roman (doing the taxi missions). I'll prioritize work for Jacob and Brucie, because they're friends, but will only work for people Niko doesn't like (Vlad, Faustin) as a last resort when other opportunities dry up. It feels natural (like you're really in Niko's shoes), but still free. V is going to be a challenge as the three-protag structure is going to turn the way I approach GTA missions/side activities on its head. Not sure if I'm going to focus on one character a few days at a time, or play a little with each character each in-game day. It all depends on the side activities, character switch mechanic, in-game time, etc. I probably won't get it right until my second playthrough, but finding the right pace/rhythm in V is one of those "personal changes/achievements" I'm most excited about. EDIT: And like IV, I will NOT be using GPS!!! I will probably use the regular mini map for my first playthough, blips only on my second, then, maybe by my fourth playthough, no radar or HUD. Ubermacht
I'll play no cheats, auto-aim off, and watch every cutscene, as well as pay attention to dialogue. But I'll break up the missions by driving round in a (legally obtained) car as Michael and explore some of the map like an average citizen. Although I'll rob a few stores and torch a few cars (and people) as Trevor.
