Link2012
I'm doing (did...) a mod that ables you to custom the [each] car exhaust color and other properties related to the exhaust from a dat file, just wait my laziness to finish No need to replace particle or anything like that
Parmm
I'd like to use it in sa-mp, so dat files are only usable in singleplayer.

I don't think so, I'm not going to replace a dat file, I'm going to create a new one and read it through CLEO (or maybe a ASI)
Parmm
Then it's a completly possible, and i think it will be cool Does the dat file knows where are the car exhaust dummies and stuff and some cars has even double exhaust.
Link2012
It is known by the game looking for the exhaust dummy position in the model and to see if the vehicle has double exhaust it looks into the handling flags (and if it have double exhausts just negate the first exhaust dummy position and you are in the other exhaust position)
