GTA IV. Nothing in the GTA series tops it yet - it has the best storyline (which is one that doesn't go off on a tangent) and arguably the most likeable protagonist that people can relate to the most. Not to mention also that GTA IV's Liberty City is the most detailed setting of any GTA game to date. GTA V will no doubt change this upon its release though.

 

GTA San Andreas and GTA Vice City would follow as my second and third favourite GTA games respectively.

This. Unfortunately, IV didn't have SA's undeniably broad appeal and alienated a good portion of the fanbase. V, however, looks as though it will have IV's detail as well as SA's scale. It is going to be astonishing.

IV was awesome tho but it was too concete jungle - i get bored of iv online fast now - i havent encountered many hackers yet, i wish i could

I think the fact that San Andreas' unofficial multiplayer is played by a lot, a lot more people then IV's official multiplayer says it all.
