Space Cowboy
After almost 13 and half years Sony has stopped production of one of the most successful game consoles ever Playstation 2. http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/07/playstat...-confirms-sony/
Ex Hellraiser
Thats a shame. I guess fifa really was the last game. An end to an era, so to speak. I guess the price for the ones that are left is going to jump up in the next week.
Pyrrhic
It certainly is an end of an era! PS2 was by far my favourite console of all time. I've probably seen more time in my PS2 than at school haha. I played my PS2 more than my PS3 well into 2012, but towards then end started playing newer games. It will be dearly missed. Algonquin Assassin
Although I've had a couple of PS2s (They broke) the one I currently have is from 2002 and still going strong. It's mind boggling to think what that console has done for the game industry. Probably more than any other console actually. AceRay
Funnily enough, while I love the PS2 and is probably my favourite console, I actually think the Gamecube and Xbox were better. The PS2 just had a much better game support so it had many brilliant games for the console, like Silent Hill 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Metal Gear Solid 3, God Hand and so forth. Gtaghost22
Man, I still remember the day I got a PS2. I have to say, it's definitely my favourite console of all time, by far.
Mr Rabbit
ps2 has taken a back step for me since 2009, not bought a game for ps2 since 2007 - so not really missing much, not many of us are the ps2s are still there, they will not self destruct we jsut won't be able to get new games for them and that has been the case with most games for a while and msot of us will not buy games for ps2 anymore anyway, ps3, xbox360 or pc is what almost all of us here primarily buy for. saying that it is the end of an era, for a truely legendary console that has dwarfed the sales of all consoles before and after it. and considering it is as durable as a nokia - mine is 10 and a bit years and still going strong. that is impressive
Mince
I still remember getting my slim one. My fat one stopped working in a year or two from the "couldn't read discs" issue. Tis a sad day, but I guess it's neat that they sold it for this long. It was never gong to outlive the Atari 2600 in terms of lifespan (1977-1992), but that would have been awesome had they produced it until 2015. Finn 7 five 11
Correct me if i'm wrong, but I did some additional searching and it says "Production has discontinued In Japan." Did they already stop in the rest of the world? Or did they just stop producing them in Japan? If it's just Japan, who cares?
Mr Rabbit
Did they already stop in the rest of the world? Or did they just stop producing them in Japan? If it's just Japan, who cares? I'm gonna just guess, go out on a limb here, you know just spitballing but if I had to take a wild leap of faith guess, the germans? no I'm kidding the japanese. the ones who feel like most here do anyway. anyway serious face now it is worldwide, my friend was going on about it 2 weeks back also i just googled it, first hit said worldwide think they mention japan maybe because sony are based there or because EU ans US may have stopped before this date, recently perhaps. 28/12 comes to mind but I think that was the day of announcement
Space Cowboy
Production was stopped few days ago in Japan first, but shortly after that it was stopped worldwide.
Whiskey
Should of been a bit more buzz around this. Would of liked some sort of event just to mark and reflect on how important the PS2 actually was. Mines in the house somewhere, just have to dig it back out. Have all of my games here still. Yea, the ps2 really did make consoles as a whole A LOT bigger, it introduced gaming at home more so than any previous console IMO. Plus making the DVD format massive. Sadly i don't think many people understand this or even care.
GTA_fear
Amen. A name that will be remembered for a long time. My fat PS2 still stands vertically and proudly, next to my old, little, white PS1. Anyway, thanks for sharing!
Pyrrhic
msot of us will not buy games for ps2 anymore anyway, ps3, xbox360 or pc is what almost all of us here primarily buy for. hell no. I will probably still be buying ps2 games well up to 2015. I especially want to expand my Rockstar games, I need to buy Vice City Stories and both Manhunt games. Of course, I will still be buying ps3 games but I have no doubt I will still go back and play my ps2, as I still do that NOW.
Finn 7 five 11
Ah it's discontinued worldwide, okay I see, well I suppose I should go pick myself up a brand new one and a few more copies of my GTA games and put it in the cupboard for my kids, or whenever the ps2's I own break down. (I have one from like 2001 still going...sorta.

I Shot The Sheriff
And if I wasn't fucking poor, I would have bought a new one in 2012 before this happened, now I feel like I let a friend die. I Shot The Sheriff
Bummer dude, I LOVED my PS2! Good deal that I've still got mine! Yeah I have one too, it's a slim that I bought second hand in mid-2011, but it's chipped pretty wasted, sometimes it doesn't read the disk properly and the game freezes, I'm afraid of it dying in the near future @GunWrath Yeah, get ready for the prices... I won't have enough money for that, not even by far. Edited January 27, 2013 by I Shot The Sheriff
GunWrath
Get a job then? $600 to play games that will remarkable is a fair price. Not only that.. let's say you pay $600 for the console and it lasts it's entire lifetime until the next consoles.. that's still a fair price. Can't put a price on your entertainment. If money keeps you from buying things that you enjoy.. then it's best to find another hobby, my friend.

Yeah I feel you mate I got mine in 2004 (had a ps1 prior to it) with many many games. Had some good times playing Vice City, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot and Burnout 1 on it. residenteviloutbreak
Ps2 was the best of that generation by a long shot, but the others had better stuff. PS2 had better game support and lasted MUCH longer. Xbox had more game specific exclusives (Example: HD GTA 3 Textures and custom radio) and a unified online network. Gamecube had better graphics and some good exclusives. (Seriously, play Resident Evil) Dreamcast went down in history has one of the biggest cult consoles. Many still want that sequel. PSP was the first true console in your hand.
Stephan90
Man I remember when it came out and how my brother bought one shortly after. The first games we had were: Gran Turismo 3, GTA 3, Medal of Honour Frontline, Metal Gear Solid 2 I bought it from him some years later. It's probably the first version and I had never any problems with it. It is still working.
