It's never been explicitly said that he went into the Witness Protection program, all they've said is that he made a "sweetheart deal with the FIB." That may not entail a new name and identity. EDIT: Woops, it appears it does say he went into witness protection. My bad. HOWEVER, most people who go into the program are encouraged to use their real first name. Niko doesn't sound dangerous, you know what does? Niko Bellic. Tommy? How is that scary? Tommy Vercetti? Holy f*ck that's the best name in the world. Claude? That's one of the lamest and most feminine names I've ever heard. Claude Speed? Jesus what a bad ass name. Point: Last names make everything better. When that third trailer + release date comes, this place will be 'ground zero'. I think all the fun will go when the truly idiotic posts outnumber the good ones. On Topic: Like somebody said, Michael might not be his birth name & we don't know his surname yet. Most of the protagonists in GTA have fairly common names, even Nikolai is a pretty common name in Eastern European countries. Not to mention that almost all of the past protagonists have had usual names Tommy, Carl, Toni, Mike, Victor, Niko (for an eastern European guy), Johnny, Luis (for a Latino) etc. The only slightly unusual one has been Claude and for all we know his mother could've been French making it quite understandable that she would name her son Claude (possibly after a father or relative). There were a set of twins in my sister's high school. One's name was Lemonjello (Lah-mon-jah-low) and Limejello (Lom-jah-low). You mean to tell me that those are not horrible horrible names. Maybe you have a point and those sister's name did make me chuckle for a sec, but, for me, I can't qualify something that cannot be changed nor chosen.
