Sony reveals the first 4K OLED TV

I stumbled across Computer & video games news and then I found this crazy announcement by Sony entertainment. They recently unveil the first 4K OLED T.V at CES 2013 and there is images of this huge T.V in this site aswell. http://www.sony.com.au/microsite/bravia/4k...v&match=b&plid=

"According to Sony the screen - which is a prototype and still in development - is the world's first and largest 4K OLED TV. The displayed model was a 56-inch prototype and is possible thanks to Sony's new Super Top Emission technology - which aids the penetration of light through larger OLED glass.

More details - and images - as they come to hand. No announcements were made regarding a retail release window"

Also, I'm not sure if this is the right place to fit it in here.

$25,000 is at the very least a bit rich for a tv.

I'll give you it's one hell of step-forward in tv res but still I'd think I'd would cap my tv budget to no more than $10,000. rolleyes.gif

I really do wish this whole 3d tv thing would die off already and take its place next to beta max. Perhaps when I don't need expensive as hell glasses to view the 3 seconds of 3d then maybe it'll take off.

They're still going with the OLED tv's? I thought they gave up with that organic crap because they couldn't make a TV larger than 15" or something like that.

What's the point of an ultra HD tv (3,840 x 2,160, if you're wondering) when the conventional peak is 1080p?

That's very early stages, it's been at least 2 years since that point and the aim was to get it working on big screens, which is a good thing, OLED is the next logical step, it has most of the benefits of CRT, but with all the modern tech abilities and of course, it's extremely thin!

Yeah I figured so haha. Funny though, last time I read about them it made it seem like it was a brickwall, and I am honestly not that used to seeing these technological advances as I have not lived as long as some and been in touch.

@Ash, Sounds about right, last time I bothered reading about them was 2 years ago haha, My interest in tv's has kinda dipped since I am no longer purchasing a new one.

Sneakerhead.

That's too much, no way in hell I am paying for a TV that is worth more than a new car. And the racing car pic is on a Gran Turismo track with a different map from another Gran Turismo game.

Pretty funny I was just thinking...some people would be looking at the photo's there on their 720p laptop screen going "Wow that TV has awesome picture quality."

Haha.

Well it won't be forever. The technology will advance.

I like the design. Very minimalistic and so, so slim. I want one. But 25k? Lol no.

Almost every TV show is in 1080i in HD

Movies are like 1080p ( can go higher ?)

Games can go higher than 1080p but 4k? Think a brand new GPU that is like double the power of current gpus would be needed tounge.gif

It is good to see this type of technology, but I still think its kinda pointless. Not worth it yet and i read that by 2015/16 is when it will be considered "affordable" which i assume is when 8k will be sold too.

ps4 supporting 4k could benefit it, sadly only for the rich though.

This T.V is for the "rich" most definitely. But still, some people could even afford it nowadays I reckon.

Yes, but 1080p is the absolute maximum output for the general public. I know there's fancy sh*t for crazy HD resolutions out there but I'm talking about the conventional medium nowadays.

This is all well and good but we aren't even close to having 4K content yet. The best Sony has to offer to these TV owners is Blu-ray's with special 1080p source that's made for up-scaling. If I had just dropped 25000 on a TV I would expect some form of content with native resolution.

$25,000? Get the f*ck out of here.

It looks nice, and I understand a lot of research had to go into this thing, but I'd rather wait a couple more years when this thing starts replacing HD TVs.

This TV will sell easily since most of the richest people will want to have one. Who wouldn't want to have the first 4K TV?

In a few years, it's gonna cost relatively cheap.

What's pissing me off is that companies out there are displaying different TVs with support for different "super high definition" systems currently in development. There are currently a number of competing and incompatible systems in the works. They are "4K"; which looks the most promising that is actually starting to appear on YouTube, 8K; which I don't believe is currently supported by anything out there (experimental TV broadcasts, YouTube, anything), and a little-known system which companies are simply referring to as "Ultra Definition". What I know for a fact is that TVs will begin flooding the market. Different ones will have support for different systems and standards than others, people will become confused as to what system their cable or satellite provider is supporting at the moment, and companies and retailers will take on huge losses from returns. People will have no idea if the TV supports 4K, 8K, or both or what is means for them. People will have no idea how to set their cable or satellite set-top box (yeah, we actually still use external cable set top boxes for digital or digital high definition content in Canada) assuming the one they have even supports it. It won't be pretty.

Alright guys, couple of things.

Yes the TV is pointless because it has almost no content that can make use of the technology.

However! Sony selling the tv's now is by no means stupid. They can sell the TV's now to the fools willing to buy it who have money to blow and start making an income from them, additionally once they start selling them word gets around, look right now, there is already an article which dragonjack only stumbled across because they started selling them. The article wouldn't have just been made to talk about 4K tv's unless there was some interesting new development such as it being released.

Also they can get a whole bunch of people to test the tv's for them and complain about faults which can be rectified in future models.

The technology will catch up eventually, it might be some years yet but more people will know it's coming now and subconsciously prepare to buy one.
