WillRock
look at where they are standing before making an assumption. I think michael is the shortest. Edited January 8, 2013 by WillRock

Chukkles
Really, who cares, I did not know the height of the GTA Characters were so special to people. Actually considering how differently Niko Johnny and Luis moved, the height of each character should affect how they move. I am tall, I often find myself about 10 paces ahead of whomever I'm walking with.

Considering this game uses a modern day IK solution, I wonder if one walks/runs faster over the other, or if they normalized the "speed" of each character. Probably the former. I've seen some game tech demos of animation rigs where one character moves faster than the other because of the longer legs - even though they both used the exact same animation source. BlackNoise
You need to read up on "perspective" and characters in R* open world games are always the exact same height, so I'm betting GTA V will be the same. It's something I didn't start noticing until LA Noire which listed each suspect's height in your notes and certain characters had that big face small body look because their motion scan actors were clearly bigger than their virtual bodies. My favorite was in RDR because John was the EXACT same height as his wife and his teenage son.

I almost thought I was crazy(crazier) for a second, but I just realized the characters' heights are exaggerated/manipulated in that cutscene. I'm playing right now and I can tell you John, Jack, Abigail, & Uncle are all the same exact height or so close it makes no difference. It's difficult to be sure because Uncle hunches over and Abigail stands in odd positions sometimes, but when they stand up straight it's very obvious. I'm guessing R* does this for animations that are related with objects/vehicles. Shorter or taller characters would need different animations or their hands would literally grab the wrong point on an object or vehicle etc.
dhuyd
Shorter or taller characters would need different animations or their hands would literally grab the wrong point on an object or vehicle etc. Not necessarily true depending on their method of animation and object interaction. If everything's relative to one another, it should work fine
BlackNoise
^ Yeah, but that' my point. Everything would cease to be relative to one another. A guy who's 6' would need to do a different animation than a guy who's 5' 10". Unless R* would consider arm length, hand/finger length. Just try and reach for the exact same object as somebody who's taller or shorter than you. It's physically impossible for people of different heights/body types to grab for an object in the exact same way.
dhuyd
I get what you're saying, and that would be true for frame by frame animation, but they're probably using a basic skeleton structure and are pivoting the joints in real time. All they'd have to do is write in the code for the arm and the hand to move towards the location of the door handle. Just like each time you get hit by a car the body moves differently depending on how you got hit (speed and angle of impact) since they are using the Euphoria Engine. I might be wrong though since I don't work at R*, but I've made a few games myself. (albeit not as complex as what R* is doing. lol.)
Adriaan
@dhuyd Right exactly. Most modern games nowadays uses a combination of motion captured animation and procedural animation during run-time. Regardless of the size of the skeleton rig, their hand placement can procedurally connect correctly onto grabbing an object, or climbing up on a ledge etc. Their skeletal rigs don't have to be the exact same size for things to work. As for speeds, if needs be, it can be normalized so that they all have the same amount of maximum forwards velocity. This is most important in multiplayer of course where one character that's taller than the other can't have a speed advantage over another. ill-thoughts
i noticed that the way Niko, Luis and Johnny (?) ran in GTA4 were COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. it seemed as if Niko being the tallest of the 3, his stride seemed to cover more ground....where as Luis was shorter, took choppier steps and seemed to Lean Forward when he ran, which made for an awkward running animation imo. i dont remember much about the 3rd guys running animation as i didnt play as him much but from what i recall, it was slightly different in its own way from the other 2. so i think each of them will definitely have their own style of running and walking and Trevor being the man with the longer legs may have a wider stride that covers more ground than Franklin, who to me resembles Barry Sanders and should Definitely be alot swifter in his movements than Trevor.
