GTA Wikipedia article locked

The wikipedia article is "semi-protected" until June 28, 2013. The last time I noticed the article was locked was between May-October last year, ending on October 23 or so, when some new screens, info, and news about the GI article was coming out. I am not posting this for a release date argument, this is to tell everyone that limited information will probably be released up until that point, meaning only some news articles and other information about the game.

A lot of the "confirmed" information here on the forums isnt even discussed in the Wiki article, mainly because not every Tom, Dick, and Harry can update it.

To see the lock date, hold your mouse over the picture of a lock above the GTA V artwork on top.

UPDATE: The GRAND THEFT AUTO SERIES wiki page is locked until February 28, 2013. And also the Rockstar Games page is locked until "disputes have been resolved." Maybe someone is editing them without the go-ahead from the higher ups?

That's what I am thinking, but let us say that it does release between March and late May, isnt June 28th too late to put any confirmed information or even reviews of the game on the article? Most game Wikis get updated the day of the launch and have reviews posted and a general consensus of the game and how well it was received. June 28 just seems like a far away date. Between May and October 23, only some small details were added, like when they released screens over the summer and stuff. Then in November when it was not locked at all, it was updated quite regularly.

You guys read too much into this. Professional wikipedia writers do know what goes on in forums, and vandalism is imminent. It's just locked until near a realistic release date.

Meh, there are a million ways things can be leaked other than wikipedia. So I wouldn't read much into this..

I wouldn't read anything in it at all.

No no no. All "semi-protection" means is that only registered editors can edit the article, not people only using IP addresses. This is usually done to stop vandalism and people adding false information; most people can still edit it, just get an account. It's 100% nothing to do with GTA V itself.

More information about semi-protection: click here

It impresses me that GTA is important enough to Wiki writers that they want to do this. I wonder if they've done this for other games.

Betting money on GTAV releasing in June.

Is the wiki lock reliabe? I thought they'd want to launch before E3?

Yeah, but it wasn't Wikipedias choice to lock it up until October 23, which is the date it was locked until for months and months. I was going to write a topic about it months ago but didnt. Rockstar had them lock it until that point. In that same week and in the weeks right afterwards the page was edited heavily.

Of course they could always go back and unlock it. Rockstar have control over their articles the same way some people have control of their own Wiki page.

Rockstar have control over their articles the same way some people have control of their own Wiki page.

This is incorrect. Wikipedia is un-biased and it's against the rules to have control over any article, especially your own. Any Rockstar-owned account/IP address editing Rockstar-related articles would be blocked because it goes against Wikipedia's Conflict of Interest policy.

Rockstar also have no control whatsoever as to whether the article is protected or not, unless they sue Wikipedia in which case you'd know about it.

However, sources have to be reliable so any release date or any other information would have to come directly from Rockstar or a credible news site to be put on the article.

Don't! This means nothing guys, just stop the worrying!!

This is nothing and means nothing.

And they don't want stuff leaked via wikipedia so if wikipedia is locked there is no other way to leak info???

Come on guys, think and realise there is nothing going on here.

Okay, youre right about that. But once again, why was it locked for months and months until October 23? Who chose that date? It was not a coincidence that the unlock date and the flood of info that week just happened.

It's the Wikipedia admins who set the date, sometimes they just set any random date a few months in the future when all the hype has died down a little so less people are wanting to edit/vandalise. It's probably just a coincidence. Either that or they unlocked it temporarily in October so people could add information from the info flood, but people started taking advantage so they locked it again.

Edit: The June 28th thing I can't explain, maybe it was just like the other time and they just set the expiry date to a few months in the future. They can always unlock it with a click of a button anyway.

That's what I want to know. Other AAA games that are releasing this year are not protected at all. Bioshock, Last of Us, Elder Scrolls Online, none of them. Far Cry 3 had reviews posted on the Wiki almost 2 weeks before the game was released.

I am not saying that either the February or June dates have anything to do with a release date, but they are definitely dates to look out for for new information. Everything that happened in late October/November came as no surprise to me because I saw that October 23 date months before, and had a hunch that a lot of stuff would happen.

Maybe June 28 is when they announce the first DLC? Who knows. This is speculation. MP3 had DLC very quickly, maybe it will be the same with V. February 28th COULD be the date of the next trailer.

The person who locked the page has no idea when new information about the game will be released, they might not have any interest in the game whatsoever. The protection is only there to stop vandalism, absolutely nothing else, and was put there by a Wikipedia volunteer. The date is absolutely irrelevant to when we hear new information.

Other games' pages may not have been locked because they might not have had such a large amount of attention, or people could have simply not vandalised it.

Yeah, but doesn't Rockstar have people who make sure people like IGN, GI, PSM, Gamestop, etc, etc, dont post stuff they arent allowed to? The people at GI said they saw stuff they werent supposed to write about. Wouldnt these same people maybe have a reason to protect the Wiki page? Sure, they might be volunteers for Wikipedia, but they could be working for Rockstar and the lock date is a date when they will finally have something substantial.

Mind you, I have been checking the GTA V wiki quite regularly and it was unlocked for over 2 months, and I think on Friday they said the cover would be revealed this month, the page was locked after that. I know I checked the Wiki on Friday and it was not locked.

Yes, they do, but Rockstar have no control over Wikipedia. To be an admin you have had to edited for aaages, and if you do anything like work for a company they ban you forever, including admins - I doubt someone would be stupid enough to do all that work for nothing.

However, Wikipedia have their own volunteers who make sure that all the information that's put on is backed up by a source (those little numbers that appear above paragraphs). Therefore to go on Wikipedia, a fact would need to have been reported on a well-respected news website/magazine anyway; you can't just put your own facts on or they'll be deleted, unless you can link to where it's been proven true elsewhere in the world.

The page was semi-protected due to vandalism. The page is constantly vandalized by IP editors and new accounts. An admin chooses how long they feel the lock should last depending on past blocks. We (as I am a major contributor on the GTAV article) cannot add any information that does not come from a reliable source. We know no more than you do!

Okay, this is the conclusion that I have come up with. It is at least one of the following three things:

1. The dates mean absolutely nothing. At all.

2. Each of those dates I posted before (February 28, 2013-June 28, 2013) will have something to do with either marketing or a major announcement for GTA V. Maybe a new trailer in February, and maybe a DLC announcement in June.

3. Maybe the June date is so far away because of the recent talk about banning the game and there has been a lot of vandalism on the page, and someone believes putting the date so far away, even after the release date, will give people enough time to cool down and stop vandalising the page when there is plenty of real, concrete information.

By the way, no one has updated the article to include the news about the cover art release later this month.

So yeah, those are 3 possibilities, but I dont know which one is true, and this is all speculation.
