FrankieP
Well, it would add to realism, yes, but I am not sure if R* would bother to. I just hope they will fix that problem with hands not moving on the wheel when taking turns.

Alenko
Hell yes, we NEED this! Always thought it looked silly when Niko hopped in to a manual and the vehicle shifted as if it was an auto.

vince91
that would be a nice touch. on a sidenote do you think cars will keep shifting like they have endless gears as in previous games? would be nice to see this fixed as well

BlackNoise
Aren't manual transmission cars a rarity in the States? Yeah, but that point doesn't matter because GTA is fictional. It's all about the cars we choose to drive. In real life I'm not stealing fast cars everyday. For me, at least 90% of the cars I drive in GTA should be manual. And yeah, R* will probably include this.
Adriaan
Obvious European poster, or rather, poster outside of America. To be fair, having a gear shift animation will just scare players from America. They won't understand what he's doing! While most cars in America are automatic, I'm sure some of the sports cars in-game could be assumed to be stick shift - even though a lot of them come in automatic, you know, to cater to that market. Kifflom112
I'm sure some cars have paddle shifter, which do not need animation considering we don't have cockpit view. But I'm sure some vehicles are manual and those should have animation. This shouldn't even be hard to implement. We also need better steering animation. I've noticed sometimes when I perform sharp cornering, the steering wheel ceases to even turn, neither did Niko's hands sometimes. Should be fixed. Adriaan
It's all about prioritization. When you consider they're battling for available resources with a limited 512 mb ram, something like an extra animation like this really is moved way down on the list. So it's not always about "but it's so simple to implement", but rather, just another example of trade-offs that's happening when having something else in memory is considered to be more important. Alenko
If there was a camera view of the inside of the car then yeah. In IV, you can still see the center center console and the gear shift box, so it would make sence.
Kifflom112
Aren't manual transmission cars a rarity in the States? Why do people still say this? Yes this country has automatic transmission in the majority, but I've also seen tons of people drive manual, both on TV and where I live. Please quit it with these idiotic stereotypes. I wasn't stereotyping americans, of course everybody knows what manual transmission is. I was merely pointing out that adding this feature for the shake of realism may turn out to be unrealistic because most cars are automatic over there. jrdn7730
In the GI demo review video they exclaimed at the details of when Michael would change bicycle gears and you could hear the chain and see the flip flops blowing in the wind. I think R* is going after small details in this one. No, I hope R*doesn't change most of the cars to auto in the game. Automatic cars sound horrible and boring. I liked the detail of when you'd hold the trigger down slightly, Niko would push in the clutch and let it roll back.

I resent that. But yeah like I said in another topic it makes it hard for the average american to do make-up, eat fries and drink a soda, while chatting on the phone if they had to shift. Depends on the cars, I'd say allot of the Higher End Exotic cars would 9 times out of 10 be manual, that said allot of them have Paddle shifters so, the animation may be diffrent for those, would be a nice detail of some cars were Auto some have a shift animation, and others have a less noticible animation for paddle shifting. Also be nice of some of the same car had an auto and then a manual randomly since most cars are available with one or the other. Alas it dosen't make much of a diffrence. GrandMaster Smith
Aren't manual transmission cars a rarity in the States? No, not really. I have a manual transmission car and I'm pretty sure just about all my friends that are guys have manual cars as well. I think if anything it's women who who more fit the stereotype of driving automatic cars, but even still my mother of 60 years knows how to operate a manual, ex girlfriends, friends' ex girlfriends all drove manuals. It's more of a 50-50 with automatics to manuals. OT: I not only hope for gear shifting animations, but manual shifting as an option all together. It's about damn time they add it, they had a soft manual system in IV so I'm expecting them to go all out in V.
Guest
that would be a nice touch. on a sidenote do you think cars will keep shifting like they have endless gears as in previous games? would be nice to see this fixed as well This issue was fixed in IV, and it wasn't too noticeable in the III era games. In Sleeping Dogs and Saints Row: The Third, however, it's very noticeable and is horrible. If R* have infinite gears in V I will be VERY pissed off, it completely ruins the sense of speed and "look how f*cking fast I'm going"
killahmatic
Aren't manual transmission cars a rarity in the States? not that rare, tbh. I see them now & then. Besides, GTA is about cars, so it would make sense for them to add at least one.
K^2
MCLA also had an option for manual transmission. Which, by the way, when assigned to the right thumbstick, worked wonderfully. I don't know why, but button shifting just doesn't work as well for me. Flicking the stick fore and back just felt right. And shift timing felt very natural too. I guess, my point is that I'd welcome both the shifting animation and an actual option to shift manually. Either one, and preferably both, would be an improvement in my books. Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.

Always best to look at actual statistics when making bold statements like that rather than looking at your local surroundings and making assumptions about an entire country. Statistically manual vehicles make up less than 10% of vehicles in the United States. While in 2002 manual cars made up 8.48% of cars sold during that year, in 2011 it was 3.85%. And it seems automatic have been favored greatly for a long time in the US... with 82% of vehicles being automatic by the late 50s.

And most people don't even know how to drive stick, because less and less parents have manual transmission cars to teach them with. And I think it's mainly a young person thing. It was much easier for me and my friends to find cheap Japanese cars in manual when we were in high school, but most of us have automatic now. Even the f*cking Nissan GTR is automatic/paddle and a lot of newer sports cars are doing this configuration now. This just made me think about something. It won't be much of an animation since so many sports cars and most newer supercars/hypercars now have those flappy-paddle gearboxes.

Maybe those numbers include a majority of those hundreds of thousands of vehicles that just sit in car lots nationwide all year around? I'm sure the numbers of automatics within large cities such as LA, NY, Dallas ect are more common, but in the smaller cities of ~20k pop or so I would say most definitely the ratio of manuals to automatics are much higher than 1:10. So many people that I talk to prefer manuals over automatics due to overall more control over the car and better fuel mileage. Going on local sites like craigslist and looking up vehicles you'll have no problem finding any manual cars for sale.
