Orthodox? Weird because more than eighty percent of the population of my country is Christian Orthodox and they celebrated Christmas on the 25th.

I kinda got that it was the orthodox christmas and that they celebrate it on the 7th, I used my incredible powers of deduction to work that one out. tounge.gif But why do they celebrate it on the 7th, is what I was wondering. I could easily search it online, much more quickly than if I was to simply ask even. But I likes the peoples to tells me just because I'm awkward.

My understanding is that the Julian gregorian calendar (used by the world) was pushed 2 weeks forward a few thousand years ago, so technically it's still the 25th. Correct me if I'm wrong.

pretty much, the orthodox church still uses the old (Julian) calendar so christmas starts on the 7th of january which is the 25th of december of the old calendar

I think the Romanian and Greek churches use the Gregorian calendar, so celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December. All other Orthodox churches, such as the Serbian, Russian, Macedonian and Bulgarian churches, use the Julian calendar, hence celebrating Christmas today/yesterday.

Yeah but if you're going to be pedantic about it, it could be any time of the year. The only reason it's during winter at all is because the Romans wanted to steal the solstice from the pagans.

Last I heard the estimations of Christ's real birth date fell somewhere around late spring/early summer.

No one's being pedantic, it's as much of a cultural holiday celebrated by secular, non-religious people as it is a religious holiday marking the birth of a prophet. Different cultures merely celebrate it on different occasions. Hence why they're different cultures, and not, y'know, the same.

Actually, we celebrate both Gregorian and Julian New Years, so that's 2 new years for us!
