Claude: Don't see why people like this snake without a tongue as he is unbelievably characterless. I get he's a silent protagonist and holy crap does he not have any emotions? He always stands there like a statue and not once does he show disappointment/sadness/laughter/etc. All he does is stands there with a blank expression.

Toni: I never understood why he's even liked. He is basically Sal's bitch, a terrorist (look at what happened to Fort Staunton!), a momma's boy and a psychopath (look at what he did to Casa's body!).

Luis: Never saw anything great about him. No idea what's so likable about him too. He always sounds bored too.

Michael: I have no idea why many say he's the best protagonist in V. He's a snake (he betrays Trevor in many ways*), a rat and doesn't care that his wife is being screwed by nearly everyone he knew/knows.

Franklin: Holy sh*t this guy is bland. He has almost no character and honestly, sounds lost most of the time. And you have no idea how hard I tried to like him as a protagonist.

*

Spoiler

He first plays dead in the Prologue to ensure that Trevor thinks he's dead so he can ditch him and, if Option A is picked, sizzles Trevor.

I don't think he's highly rated in the first place and, thus, can hardly be overrated.

Without hesitation, CJ. There's no appeal to his character. He's bland and un-interesting. The only reason why people find themselves relatable to him is because of the storyline. Trevor would be next though. We've seen a lot of maniacs and crazy characters but Trevor feels like a complete waste of time and has no character development whatsoever. I feel like Rockstar just wasted valuable time on the actor just to make sure that there were enough protags to choose from.

I kind of feel for Steve Ogg. He's actually quite a talented actor, but it's a shame he was wasted on a literal walking pile of excrement.

I watched a couple of videos on his YouTube channel and such, he seems like a pretty genuine guy with a lot of talent. It's a shame he's always going to be typecast as an edgy psychopath because of GTA V.

CJ is pretty overrated. GTA SA is a good game but CJ just felt like such a step down from Tommy. There is potential for his character in the LS part but after that he is just all over the place and doesn't have a consistent arc.

Gotta be Trevor, he is just the videogame version of the average GTA player who only plays to mindlessly kill NPCs and blows the sh*t up and that's it. No depth and little to no Character Development.

I would say Franklin too, because his storyline it's kind of a rehash of CJ's storyline in GTA SA, but he is not that popular, like many already said here.

CJ.

The only reason why he gets so much praise is because "HE CAN HAVE CUSTOM CLOTHES AND A HAIRCUT AND FLY A JETPACK!!!!111" But if you cut out all of that, he's actually not all that good.

His character is inconsistent, he always takes sh*t from other people, and he's just not interesting.

I don't consider Trevor overrated because I never saw him get that much praise, but he's certainly better than CJ imo.

Where does he get praised? People praise SA sure, but I've never seen a lot of praise for CJ either here or outside.

Most overrated currently is Niko. Standard revenge story dragged out as long as possible. His constant excuse is money even though he has enough by the middle of the game. The 'OMG Niko best ever!!' circlejerk never stops.

It's usually around the forums or on YouTube. I once went to a thread on here, (forgot what it was called) and this guy was talking about how CJ was "god protagonist" and how he would f*ck Niko's ass or something.

I do have to admit that Niko is slightly overrated though. Doesn't mean he's a horrible protagonist, he's number 1 in my book followed by Tommy Vercetti but he's a little overrated as well.

That guy was a troll who got banned. CJ doesn't actually get praised a lot.

El Penguin Bobo

You actually said it too on the thread you know. lmao

@TheSantader25 lmfao, I was talking Son Of Zeus, but the same thing apply to you because you said Niko was overrated on this thread.

I think it's because we both posted at the same time. 😂

It seems a number of people share this view too. Atleast Niko gets praise for his actual personality/character. Whether people like him or not really just comes down to taste more than anything, but to me Niko deserves all the praise he gets and CJ doesn't.

To be completely honest, the GTA Online protagonist, followed closely by Trevor. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like Trevor at all, but perhaps I was a bit too harsh on him in the past. The GTA Online protagonist is the worst protagonist of the GTA series imo. There’s literally no story to him and he caters to manchildren all over the world who play GTA Online.

Of course not. NEVER! ;) Trevor still sucks ass. I would like to see BOTH him and the GTA Online protagonist get their butts kicked by Niko Bellic, Arthur Morgan, John Marston, Vito Scaletta, Tommy Angelo, Tommy Vercetti, Luis Fernando Lopez, and Claude!

I'd have to say CJ. There's nothing to dislike about him and he comes across as cool enough, but I don't see anything special or interesting about him as a character. He's just a generic "gang banger" with nothing much to him in a fun but cartoonish storyline that doesn't offer any character development, no real emotion displayed and nothing that stands out in the voice acting either. Don't get why anyone would say he's a great character or have any enthusiasm for him as a character.

Be careful. I guarantee someone will get upset and say it's because of "opinions", but yeah I agree.

Actually I'm glad this thread was bumped back up. CJ 1st and Trevor 2nd as the most overrated protagonists by a comfortable margin. Just the way to start my Easter long weekend on a high.:)

No need for anyone to be upset they can think he's a great character all they want . I just don't see the aspects that make people find him great/exceptional/the best the way I can with most other GTA protagonists.

Niko obviously crappy voice acting, boring personality and dull character.

Agreed. I forgot to mention the sh*tty voice acting. You spend $100 million on the game but can't get an actual Serbian to voice him.

It's a good thing there are better protagonists to choose from than the generic gang banger.😉

There's a lot more to it than just how authentic the Serbian accent is though. They'd have to not only speak Serbian but also (more importantly) speak English fluently and clearly enough, have a voice that suits the character, be a suitable actor to portray the character in general, and be available in the US to work for a long period of time, and all this without being told initially that it's GTA and not just more of a random voice acting job. I don't know how many Serbian voice actors (again, not even all Serbian actors would be up for this, only those interested in voice work) who fit all those criteria there really are clamouring for work in the US but I'd guess not many. And if they find an American actor whose voice acting they're happy with no reason not to use him.

There's so many aspects to what makes the voice acting good or bad than just how realistic the accent is, particular when the vast majority of people playing the game won't be aware of how realistic or not it is. I'm aware that the accent isn't realistic but it doesn't matter in terms of enjoying the game whatsoever, as the acting is exceptionally good in every other way, and the accent is Eastern European enough to my non-expert ears to be convincing/not immersion breaking and is also pleasant sounding.

R* is a big company, they could've found one if they wanted to...i think they decided to go with Hollick since most people don't know what a Serb sounds like. But if you have a Serb friend like I do it's really bad to listen to. As for the acting being 'exceptionally good', it's subjective.
