Tell us who you chose and why, i'll start off-

I chose CJ because to me his character was quite boring but his story and the game itself was pretty amazing though i'm not very keen on the whole 90's east coast rap setting.

(Couldn't find a similar topic and didn't include the V protagonists because we don't know enough about them.)

Luis. He's just some cocky downtown douchebag who works as a bodyguard. He makes CJ likeable.

The setting of the game does not prove a character overrated or not. The character himself/herself proves whether or not he/she is overrated. But anyway, I voted for Luis. At least with most people I have talked protagonists with have mentioned Luis as their favorite, simply because he owns nice suits, parties often and has sex with complete strangers. To me, he's a womanizing piece of sh*t who deserves nothing.

Exactly.

While I dislike CJ and Luis. I just don't get the fasination with Claude. He can't speak, and with the PS2 animations that means that he has no personality what so ever. In GTA 3 we could just as well have played as custom character.

Totally agree. smile.gif But from this post it seems you don't like CJ either. wow.gif

It's true, but not as much as Luis.

simonp92: I agree with that. Never understood how someone who never speaks is so popular.

WF the Hobgoblin

I didn't really think Luis was that popular in the first place. I'm just going to go with CJ due to the rampant CJ fanboyism around these forums.

Confession:

I actually think Niko is a tad overrated as well though. Don't get me wrong, he's my second favourite protagonist but I sometimes feel that the IV fans here somewhat exaggerate the depth of his character when arguing with the SA fans.

Never.. well maybe a little. tounge2.gif

Definitely Luis. I just don't like him at all for all the reasons stated above.

I liked Claude because he was just a hired gun and truly an emotionless killer who would follow any orders no matter what. He didn't have much personality but he certainly got the job done.

I liked Tommy because he was a straight up psycho. He had the balls to piss the Forelli's in the mouth, but he wasn't a snake either towards those who were loyal to him. The only thing that makes me dislike Tommy is the fact that he pretty much dumped Rosenberg by 1992 and broke all contact with him, when Rosenberg has done so much for him.

I liked CJ because he had much more personality then any other protagonist. For the first time we had a guy who was actually afraid for his life, like a normal person. Eventually he got the job done, even the most insane tasks for Toreno, but not without some complaint, which is good in my opinion. He breaks his back for his brother, even though his brother constantly calls him a perpetrator and criticizes him. Hell he travelled throughout whole San Andreas just to get his bro out of prison. He's done a lot for his gang and he knows how to make connections.

I liked Niko because he was reluctant. He didn't want to stray off the path again, he didn't want to kill anymore. But when his cousin was in danger and things were closing down on them, he has shown to be a straight up ice cold killer. If you're sitting in a basement, kidnapped by a high-ranking russian mob boss and about to get tortured, and you still have the steel in your balls to insult the one torturing you, then you're quite a badass in my book.

Johnny was cool, he wanted the best for his gang but was constantly sabotaged by Billy. Unfortunately he ends up losing the most.

Claude Speed does speak and his personality is completely different. In the GTA2 promotional movie with Scott Maslen, you could clearly see Claude Speed yelling and being very aggressive. GTAIII Claude on the other hand is mute and always calm.

CJ obviously, he's the worst protagonist on the series because his story doesn't make any sense.

Because it makes him dfferent than the others protagonists? catspider.gif

I picked tommy because he's basically Tony Montana, not really an original creation from rockstar. But honestly, I don't dislike any of the protagonists, I just feel tommy is a bit overrated.

The entirety of Vice City was a throwback to Scarface. Up until the mansion shootout and the chainsaw killing.

Tommy. All he did was kill people, he wasn't exactly compelling. He was good, but I don't get why so many people cream over him when he was as 2D as they come.

I'm not sure he'd cut it by today's standards, but he was awesome for 2002.

Since this thread was made before GTA V was released I added in the GTA V protagonists and multiple choice if anyone wants to vote for more than one. Anyway I retract my previous vote for Luis. CJ and Trevor are without a doubt the most overrated.

Without the customisation options and RPG elements I don't get the appeal of CJ. He's always come across as boring, flat and just not very interesting. In any other game I bet he wouldn't get a second look. As for Trevor, Claude and Tommy already achieved the "you can be any maniac you want" philosophy, but Trevor gets made out to be highly unique. Maybe it could've worked better if R* didn't waste their time on poorly executed "humour" to make him "CRAZZZYY".
