MIKON8ERISBACK
(Courtesy of theguardian.co.uk) "A Connecticut community is to hold an amnesty of violent video games in the wake of last month's mass shooting in Newtown. Organisers Southington SOS plan to offer gift certificates in exchange for donated games, which will be burned. The group, a coalition of local organisations, says its actions do not assert that video games were the cause of the killings in nearby Newtown, but argues that violent games and films desensitize children to "acts of violence". Pupils from Sandy Hook elementary school, where 26 people were killed on 17 December, returned to classes for the first time on Thursday in the neighbouring town of Monroe. Sandy Hook elementary is still being treated as a crime scene and it is unclear if it will ever reopen. The video game amnesty will take place on 12 January in Southington, a 30-minute drive east from Newtown. The town of Southington has provided a dumpster, organisers said, where violent video games, CDs or DVDs will be collected. "As people arrive in their cars to turn in their games of violence, they will be offered a gift certificate donated by a member of the Greater Southington Chamber of Commerce as a token of appreciation for their action of responsible citizenship," the group said in a statement. "Violent games turned in will be destroyed and placed in the town dumpster for appropriate permanent disposal." John Myers, chairman of Southington YMCA and member of Southington SOS, was not immediately available to speak to the Guardian, but tech website Polygon reported that the works would be incinerated by town employees." The burning spree not only covers donated video games deemed "violent", but also CDs and DVDs. What's your opinion regarding this? What do you believe the continuing effect that this fallout may have on Grand Theft Auto V? Do you believe that this will have a real impact on reducing violence? Or would you rather see gun control tightened? Personally, I know for a fact that Connecticut prior to the shooting already had considerably strict gun control laws yet Adam Lanza still managed to get his hands on a rifle, two handguns, a shotgun, and a rifle. What's your opinion regarding this? Do you think that the revolt will continue to escalate or is this just another short lived fad like during the H1N1 Mexican flu epidemic? EscoLehGo
I think this is the left's answer to gun nuts. Why is no one looking at this Adam Lanza kid's parents? They totally sucked, if you want to blame someone for what happened point your finger at his absentee father and gun collecting mother who was in denial about what a loony tune her son was. She couldn't even use the excuse that she couldn't afford to get him help, she was f*cking loaded, she got one of those deals that American divorce courts hand out to women where they somehow deserve half or sometimes more of what their ex-spouse makes. There are plenty of gun owners who don't feel the need to burst into a kindergarten classroom and shoot as many kids as possible, there are plenty of gamers who aren't batsh*t insane and can different reality from fantasy. The majority shouldn't be demonized or punished because of the actions of a disturbed few.
na89340qv0n34b09q340
I think the whole "It's wrong to be desensitized to violence" argument is dumb. Violence, murder, rape, etc. has become a regular part of our culture, and we need to adapt to and learn the difference between fictional evil and real evil. Desensitization only creates apathy when someone doesn't know that difference.

It was some loony tune with an absentee father and a careless mother. It should also be noted that he was medicated with psychiatric drugs since the age of ten. Adriaan
Yada yada it's not video games or entertainment blada blada. I'll just put this video here to show what kids in other parts of the world without access to video games get up to: And that's the least violent thing they get up to. I tell you, if GTAV was out the week before the London riots and fires... all of that wouldn't have happened. True story.

I tell you, if GTAV was out the week before the London riots and fires... all of that wouldn't have happened. True story. I really understand where your coming from. I can't even begin to explain how exponentially more dangerous that "game" is compared to any video game. No sh*t. However, there are serious implications to exposing little kids to such subject matter. The shooting wasn't just caused by video games per se, it was caused as I said above, an absentee father, a careless mother with no grasp of common sense, and a mentally unstable mind. In some cases, mood stabilizer drugs can have the complete opposite effect to their intentions, most notably when they're administered from a very young age. Adriaan
The most obvious counter to this whole thing is this: The kid had access to weapons that his mother left him with access to. Why not destroy all weapons, right? Same story here. It's the responsibility of parents not to expose their children to violent video games if they feel so passionate about their exposure to it - just like keeping your weapons under lock and key. In the end, though, I'm wondering if these articles are just a bunch of tosh. Is it really a large group of people in a town that is doing this? Or is it just this "group". I mean, America is sort of known for having all these parent groups desperate for attention.

A little life story: When I was eight years old, I got my hands on a game called 007: Nightfire on the Nintendo GameCube. It was your typical first person shooter/shoot-em-up game, although no where near as redundant and repetitive as current Call of Duty or Halo games. It started a short fad in my life where I began obsessing over various types of guns, although my knowledge of firearms was negligible at the very best. Not once did I ever think about taking an innocent persons life, but I began fantasizing over what it would be like to run around shooting a gun, not as a weapon, but as a tool of having fun, a toy if you will. I knew friends that ran around with those fake plastic Chinese made cap guns with the orange tips, but I wasn't too interested in them for some reason and was actually scared sh*tless of them. How does this relate to the topic? It's about de-sensitization and the results of exposing kids to adult subject matter. Although forgive me if I sound crazy, but I don't think there's any harm in in teaching kids a thing or two about what guns are in real life. Anti-Gun Bills Going to Senate January 22 Whenever I hear about stuff like this, it makes me physically sick, literally. The idea that gun control reduces gun-related crimes is a myth. In my city, there was recently a wave of home invasions and armed robberies involving guns. Some of them in neighborhoods relatively close to my house. In case you didn't know, Ontario has some of the strictest gun control laws on the planet outside of Europe, and the city of Mississauga itself and it's mentality, don't even get me f*cking started! bread
Nothing new really, people have been going against violent video games for years by doing all sorts of stuff but it does absolutely nothing. Video games will thrive for years to come and the argument (one of them) that the next motive for upcoming mass shootings (I absolutely hope there won't be any) will be violent video games. Obviously it's all speculation though, but yet at the same time it comes from idiots, so really all we're seeing here is another case of idiocy and time wasting. Video games are the new motion pictures. Literally. Very recently, revenue from video game sales began to overtake that of movies. Video games nowadays are a lot like 100% interactive player controlled CGI motion pictures. I really hope that people are waking up and will soon realize the real roots of the problem rather than solely blaming guns or video games. Outlaw neither. Instead, we need some good old fashioned common sense parenting and law enforcement.

Sgt. Foley
If you are going to blame video games for a real life shooting, don't even bother. It is the parents decision to give their child the game in the first place. Everyone else is over the age of 18. If you play shooting games, and then you go out to kill a bunch of people, you are the most stupidest person ever.
