Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

My guess is that the two will be on one disc on PS3 and either two discs or one disc with a free download of the Ground Zeroes chapter on 360.

I really hope so. I'd be pretty peeved if they released Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain on separate discs... especially after Kojima compared them to the Tanker and Plant segments of MGS2. Clearly, they're two parts of the same game, using the same engine, main character, etc. If they don't release them simultaneously, how long after Ground Zeroes will they wait to release The Phantom Pain?

I've loved how they've marketed this game thus far, but this ambiguity is frustrating. angry.gif

I think the next gen version (if they release it) will have everything one the disk but they don't want to make any concrete announcements regarding the current gen versions until the see how feasible it is to put it on more than one disk vs seperate releases etc.

I'm just wondering.. could Ishmael be Miller? Their voices are almost identical.

Hideo has confirmed that GZ & MGS V TPP are two separately games, and that GZ will be out first, and then we'll have to wait until TPP get's out.

My guess: Ground Zeroes fall 2013 PS3 only (PS4 via gaikai) and MGS V: The Phantom Pain Q2-Q4 2014 PS3 & PS4.

WTF man!

I thought they would both be on the same disc. cryani.gif

I thought Ground Zeroes would be like a 1 hour mission and then Phantom Pain was the next 30-40 hours. sad.gif

I'm not paying twice. That's £80.

Solid Snake? Hmm, but how would he fit in? is the Phantom Pain based around the time Big Boss was cloned?

Conspiracy!

I think we're going to see Big Boss try to be a father to his three children - but be hampered by his deteriorating mental state. He's seeing fiery horsemen and people he's already murdered (Volgin) - Hell, just look at his eyes when he's escaping in the helicopter, he's lost it.

A man with a fragile grip on reality, wild mood swings and untreated PTSD would believably have a vastly difficult relationship with loved ones.

Hence why all three brothers are so incredibly diverse.

Solid turned out to be both apathetic and cynical.

Liquid grew up bitter and insanely misanthropic.

Solidus became compassionate and idealistic to the point where he gave up everything in the hope of helping his people.

And all of them have such different opinions of the man, ranging from hatred to a desire to surpass him to actual paternal love. As his mind juddered from one disaster to the next and started unraveling, is it wrong to assume that his interaction with other people, not least his sons, would be incredibly erratic?

At this point, it does not matter if this idea would be canonically wrong - it would pack the biggest emotional punch of the whole game. Seeing Big Boss try to be father but fail because of mental issues would be devastating to those who've sympathised with him since Snake Eater.

And it will be an incredibly eye opening experience when we go back and see how the brothers acted and contrast that to their exposure to their father.

I had always thought this, ever since GZ was announced he said MGS5 is the direct sequel to GZ, and the way he explained the game he made it sound like it was basically a current gen version of Peace Walker, with co-op and free roamable areas, more focusing on combat and gameplay than too much heavy story. Also getting to fully utilize mother base and all its features, as he said the PP trailer is the very start of MGS5 so obviously mother base has been long since destroyed as in the trailer and may not be squad based like the last two games were, back to roots I hope.

Which I think is a good idea, remind fans with the plot of PW as not many played it, even then most of the good plot were in the briefing files and not the actual story missions.

It is a much better idea to do this, then next gen can take advantages of the extremely cutscene heavy MGS5 so that it won't have to be on 100 discs.

I can't wait to see him form into the big boss we know, I want to see him owning f*ckers in a trench coat with his red fist.

He was cloned in 1972.. between the events of Portable Ops and Peace Walker. Although they do seem to be messing around with the already established canon on this one, for example it is stated that he rescued Frank Jaeger (Gray Fox) from a POW camp during the Mozambican Civil War and after taking part in the Rhodesian Civil War (which lasted from 1964 - 1979) he took Frank and Naomi Hunter to the United States after the end of that war in 1980. Afterwards, Frank and Big Boss returned to Africa to continue fighting, leaving Naomi behind in America. According to the new timeline Big Boss would've been in a coma during the early part of the Mozambican Civil War and the latter part of the Rhodesian Civil War and still been in that coma in 1980. This info suggests that his rescue of Gray Fox occured some time between in 1977 or 1978 but they could always jig it around a bit and have BB rescue him during the Phantom Pain since the Mozambican Civil War didn't officially end until 1992. This would actually be really cool but the other stuff will have to be discarded. This kind of shows that the 9 year coma thing wasn't really that well planned out. From what I gather some of that info comes from the two MSX2 games so maybe they're just not gonna acknowledge it as canon anymore.

I'm still hoping MGS V leads to a remake of the MSX2 games. And I REALLY hope we get to play as Big Boss because he's a much, MUCH more interesting character than Solid Snake imo.

And this game looks swwwweeeeeeeeett. I hope they both release on next gen systems, or at least Phantom Pain does. According to the wikipedia, Big Boss can take bikes, planes, cars, etc. to destinations. Sounds like GTA: Metal Gear.

I never moticed this until now but the promotional artwork for "The Next Metal Gear" released a year ago actually shows Big Boss in his post coma, robotic arm horn on the head state... just goes to show what you can miss when you're not looking for it.

Also this new unit "Diamond Dogs".. does anybody else think it could be kind of a precursor to the FOXHOUND we see in MGS 1 with Big Boss, Ocelot, Psycho Mantis and Kazuhira Miller??

David Hayter explains why he is not in MGS V.

I have been up in Toronto, for the past eight months, directing my first film. On the December break, I came home to Los Angeles for the holidays. I heard then, that recording sessions for MG:V were being put together.

But I didn’t hear anything about whether I’d be needed or not.

So, I got in touch with someone involved in the production. We got together for lunch, and he told me that they "wouldn’t be needing me" on this game. No reason, or explanation was given beyond that.

And that was it.

I drove home through Laurel Canyon, bummed, and thinking about Snake.

To be clear, I love being a part of the world of Metal Gear. I admire its technological innovations, the gameplay, the political message of it all. But primarily, I love the fans of these games. Two grown men burst into tears upon meeting me at the Vancouver Fan Expo last year.

Now that... Is a rare and excellent role. You know you’re making an impact.

And I love doing it.

In 1998, I tried to do come up with a voice which epitomized the kind of worn, put-upon, genetically-engineered clone-soldier that I saw Snake to be. Over time, as the games became more stunning and visually sophisticated, I tried to transition that initial voice into the increasingly real environments in which Snake found himself. My level of success is up to you, but any perceived deficiencies were not for lack of hard work. I have dedicated a huge amount of time and effort into creating a compelling character, capable of expressing the myriad emotional, physical and psychological hurdles that Snake has to face.

Anyway, now it’s been fifteen years, nine games, and an enormous blast to undertake.

If it were my choice, I would do this role forever. To hear anyone else’s voice coming from Snake’s battered throat, makes me a little ill, to be honest.

But the truth is -- it’s not my choice. Any and all casting decisions are the sole purview of Hideo Kojima, and Konami itself. And that’s fair.

And I’ll get by. I am not lacking for employment on any level.

But I didn’t want anybody to think that I was intentionally abandoning them.

And know that I will miss this job, and this character, very much.

My best wishes to you all,

David Hayter

I am pretty bummed the f*ck out not having Hayter. Feel f*cking bad for him the poor sod, they didnt even give him a heads up.

What I was under the asumption was that he would still be voicing Big Boss in Ground Zeroes (otherwise it would make no f*cking sense) then after waking up within MGS5 it would explain the voice change to that of what it was in MGS4.

Though I think this is bullsh*t and they could have easily sidestepped it, like the only reason Solid Snake heard Big Boss as he did were nanomachines implaced in him so he would not figure it out he was a clone, boom sorted. Or just postpone the voice change till much closer to when Big Boss and Snake first meet, or he could even be putting it on or altering his own nanomachines, and have it so solid snake barely ever met big boss before MG1 and only spoke on codec. Sort of like Raiden and the Colonel in MGS2.

Either way, Hayter SHOULD be in ground zeroes otherwise they are f*cking morons, and I dont give two f*cks about a new generation if its the same motherf*cking character I want Hayter, id get it if he didnt want to do it anymore but he obviously does ffs.

I get that the voice has to change but it could be held off alittle, or if not. Bring Hayter back for when Solid Snake starts entering the picture.

That is what should be happening.

Because I feel nobody should be voicing any snake aside from maybe Kurt f*cking Russell.

I think MGS4 was first announced at the 2005 Tokyo Game Show, and then had it's first E3 trailer in 2006. The game was of course released in 2008.

I cannot comment on the other ones, but I would guess they showed the first trailer for those games about a year before the game hit store shelves. MGS4 was just a different case. That one went through a lot of development because it was being made for a new console at the time.

Yeah that's true.. I also remember hearing that the changed it halfway through because Kojima returned to a more active role in the project having originally wanted to leave it to his underlings. When you think about it the first real trailers all be they teasers came 7 and 4 months ago respectively so we could see this game before the year is out. My guess is that they have the Ground Zeroes part finished (due to them showing us most of the ending in the trailer) but they're still working on The Phantom Pain (the second part) if this is the case then we will probably see the prologue Ground Zeroes released seperately from the main game.. perhaps as a paid download and then the Phantom Pain released a little bit later as a stand alone on current gen and an all in one package for next gen simultaneously. This is all just speculation though.

It's actually not. They are two parts for the same game.

Obviously, GZ is the prologue. But that doesn't mean they wont be sold seperately wich was what i was pointing at. Two seperately sold games if you will.

They could end up doing th same thing they did with MGS2 wich devided the game into two main parts, but i don't see that. Both games will be huge.

Well here's hoping. It could just be a coincidence and I wouldn't be surprised if they dingied Hayter after all - I have had the impression for some time that Kojima and Konami don't appreciate him as much as they should.

The way Kojima spoke about it made it seem like a single chapter similar to the Tanker Chapter in MGS2 albeit quite a bit longer in order to get players used to gameplay mechanics etc. however he did say that he couldn't speak about how it will be sold yet.. probably because he doesn't know. The way it seems to be at present is that Ground Zeroes is composed of 2 main missions.. 1 consisting of rescuing Paz and Chico from camp Omega and another one consisting of rescuing or assisting Miller during the attack on motherbase. If this is all it is then it will consist of little more than a few hours of gameplay so they wont be able to justify charging people full price to play it or spending the money to distribute it on a stand alone disk. For this reason I think it will either be on the same disk as the main game or it will be a piece of pre release DLC. MGS 2 gave players the option of only playing the Big Shell portion of the game so I think this will be the same.. if people don't want to download Ground Zeroes then they don't have to but they will miss out on some of the story if they dont.
