Commander S 24,304 Posted February 5, 2017 (edited) I've had this on my mind a lot, lately - no particular reason... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXuZBywW4gAAnd while it was weak as heck for Columbia to wimp out of letting Mingus record the lyrics on the original, it's no less a classic track for the omission - it just simmers away, and the solos are sooo good (to borrow a great Cannonball line, 'everybody acts mean on this one'). Love it: Edited February 5, 2017 by Commander S

Commander S 24,304 Posted April 20, 2017 (edited) For a fun comparison, I really like the reworked 'play-off' version used in Blazing Saddles - particularly the extended sections: (damned if I can find the original sheet music for it, though - I have the horrible sneaking feeling that it was one of those 'done for the session, then discarded' situations ) Edited April 20, 2017 by Commander S

Fonz 3,135 Posted August 1, 2017 Saw Herbie live last week at a jazz festival. It was honestly one of the greatest concerts I've seen in my life, extremely close to perfection if not actually perfect, so much so that I'm ready to forgive him for unironically playing a keytar at one point. To my surprise and delight, he played this version of Watermelon Man, rather than the Headhunters one: I hadn't realized how near infallible Herbie really is as an improviser before seeing him live. These folks were ripping it on stage when I got there: They're an amazing Afro-Cuban jazz group whose amazing sense of swing really impressed me. Homemade Dynamite 4,056 Posted October 15, 2017 Bringing this up because I wanted a place to share jazz music of all kinds. To this day, I considered it among the best soundtracks ever, anime or otherwise. A Tribe Called Quest combines jazz with hip-hop very well, as shown here. This is an example of a combining jazz with electronic music, an underrated combo in my opinion. Of course, you can't go wrong with the classics.
