Some of you might know this story already. This was apparently written when his daughter was born... Sadly she was one of the victims of the sandy hook shooting, so he changed the song name to Ana's Way.. After that Jimmy Greene made the album called Beautiful Life dedicated to his daughter.

I really enjoy this version of Caravan from the movie Whiplash, which i also liked a lot!

Don't get me wrong i like the versions that came before it, this one is just different from all the ones i've heard.

Funny you mention Caravan - was just about to post this version:

Amazingly, this is doing the rounds on an IKEA advert, of all places - don't get much really good stuff like this on daytime TV, let alone commercials, so to get periodic bursts of Phil Woods on the airwaves is a nice surprise. ;)

RIP Rudy Van Gelder - the legendary engineer (whose distinctive touch probably accounts for a sizeable chunk of most Jazz listeners' record collections!) passed away on Thursday, aged 91. :(

So many tracks, it's hard to pick one - but this is as quintessentially 'Rudy' as any, IMO (and it's just so good in general!):

Both of those "Caravan" recordings rival my personal favorite:

Sad news about Van Gelder. I don't want to diminish his fame but I still feel like he's underappreciated. I'll try not to go off on a tangent about Donald Fagen, but he stated in interviews that Van Gelder's sound was the "template" for his own arrangements. It's a timeless approach :)

aight mothaf*ckas let's get f*ckin crazy up in this mf

about the band:

Students from the Norwegian Academy of Music., the most prestigious school in Norway. I'm absolutely amazed at how talented these young musicians are.

the show:
It's a talent competition BUT among already-established artists, with an incredible live band(such as the one above), where they compete in a different genre of music every week, and receive ACTUAL CRITIQUES from professors and sh*t, not only on how they sing but the way they perform. It's AWESOME

let me know if the video doesn't work

Erroll Garner tearing it up with Misty. Incredibly cool video and it's always nice to see the author himself do it.

One of my favorite records ever. Wonderful stuff, Switch.

Gerry Mulligan playing Round Midnight. It's Monk himself on the piano:

Sorry for the double post, but we have to keep this thread alive.

Two performances of Django's signature tune, Nuages:

This is probably the most sophisticated version of the piece, with a clarinet (two clarinets, in fact) playing the main theme. Some amazing soloing, including tasteful use of artificial harmonics.

Django's last version of Nuages, from his very last recording session just weeks before his death. Interesting recording: he plays an electric guitar here (apparently an Epiphone) and his playing shows the influence that bebop had on his style in his later years. Also, notice the subtle piano playing.
