That'd be the iconic incarnation of the Evans trio, with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian - same as on this absolute gem! :)

This f*cking gem, good grief:

The legendary (and thankfully contemporary) Christian McBride on a fretless electric bass, sounds great. Fresh bass solo at about 4 minutes.

I've never heard a fretless bass sound so crisp, aside from Jaco of course. Wild drum solo as well. Some crazy collective improvisation at the end.

Never in all my years on Earth have I been so motivated to clean the bathroom than I was when I heard this music.

With each scrub of the Swiffer pad, I will bring honour and glory to my lord and family name!

^ I may have mentioned it before, but one of my friends who has that album on vinyl always puts it on when he's hosting. You'd be surprised at how well it is received, and how fitting it is to a party. :D

Stumbled upon this, a cool arrangement of one of my favorite songs:

^ It's always quite remarkable to think of how much Woody Herman let each generation of younger players dictate the sound of the band - took the whole thing to some interesting places, even compared to other bands that moved with the times in a similar way. See also:

(which, for the record, is hilarious to plonk in front of a band and expect them to play at full speed - particularly for whichever poor schmuck in the sax section draws the short straw, and has to play the piccolo part... :panic: )

^Cool stuff. The albums has a sort of Bobo vibe to it.

I've been getting more into Pat Metheny recently. It's an acquired taste, that's for sure!

The band is just so extremely coordinated. Amazing.

Cool stuff. People tend to immediately associate acid jazz with "trippy".

Also, you probably know so already, but Metheny wrote "James" for James Taylor out of admiration. I didn't learn until recently.

...and can also tear it up on something like this (second horn solo, at 2:54 - first is Ernie Watts):
