Use of Spanish in GTA V

Before I made this topic I searched if it has been discussed before. But apparently no one has asked this before.

According to United States Census from the year 2000, 1,422,285 people in Los Angeles spoke Spanish as first language. That's 41.69% of the total population. I don't know how it has developed since that time. But the number has probably not much decreased.

I remember in San Andreas the Hispanic gang members spoke English with some random Spanish words and accent.

How will it be this time? Will some of them entirely speak in Spanish to you? Especially when they don't want the protagonist to understand what they say. Any opinions on that?

There might be?....

But in America, we use english. It is, afterall, a nordic-european country. I don't have any qualms with a little bit of spanish as long as the subtitles pop up while it's being spoken, unless it's cuss words because we know all of them.

In RDR there was spanish, but the subtitles didn't translate them

English is a west Germanic language not Nordic...

America is not a "nordic european country". As already mentioned Spanish was close behind English as first language in Los Angeles in the year 2000. However, I don't know how many Spanish speakers switch to English to communicate with English-only speakers.

Considering the effort Rockstar went to have everybody speak Brazillian in Max Payne and Russian in Hove Beach in Liberty City I think they will speak Spanish but only in certain areas.

from what i understand, the 2010 census, the number of people who speak a language other than english at home in los angeles, is around roughly 60%, around half of which have a poor understanding of english, of which 80% are spanish speakers, which would work out slightly less than a quarter of the inhabitants speaking spanish almost exclusively, with around another 5% speaking other languages, i'd assume they'd have to if they wished to keep it somewhat authentic

It would be interesting to see how extending the findings to the countryside surrounding LA affects the language. For example Urban parts of England are extremely multicultural, but rural parts much less so.

I'd predict that there will be quite a lot of Spanish speaking Peds in GTAV, but as the countryside is going to cover more than half the map, I'd expect Spanish speakers will represent a fairly small percentage of them.

I'm pretty sure you'll hear all different languages depending on what area you're in, just as it was in IV.

I think it will be just like in RDR but instead of a mexico they have neighborhoods where it's spoken and random people.

I think it's possible. Like others have said, Portuguese was spoken in Max Payne 3. No translations whatsoever. I really liked this, because it created a sense of fear and confusion within the game. I had no idea what some of the enemies were saying, but I imagine they weren't discussing how much they enjoyed my company. tounge.gif

Based on that, I think it'd be cool to see this in V. An unknown language creates a sense of confusion, as I said before. You'd have no idea if someone is talking about shooting you in the face, asking you out on a date, or completely ignoring your existence. Which creates a sense of fear & paranoia. We fear the unknown.

(Maybe I'll just run over EVERYONE. I'd never discriminate against anyone for speaking another language.) tounge.gif

Prepare for some good old fun in Mexico, and in the US for that matter. In my opinion the game is a masterpiece. I even would go as far as saying it is the best game ever.

I´m spanish and I think the spanish that is on the Rockstar games sucks a bit xD.

I wonder if the people who speak spanish in the game are really spanish people, even from Middle-South America.

That's because most of the people who speak Spanish in the games (RDR for example) are not from Spain. They are supposed to be Latin American.

The only thing Latin speakers(excluding Italian) say in GTA games is Puta Puta Puta Puta Puta. Thats all I heard in Max Payne 3 and other GTA games.

When actors were doing the voice work for Max Payne 3. I would have got them to do some pedestrian dialogue for GTA V. Although they would probably still have to pay them to use it in V.

In America, speak English. They'll probably have some Spanish one-liners or something, nothing more.

Haha yes they do. The different regions have different dialects though so what I should have said is the effort Rockstar went to have everybody speak Paulistano in Max Payne.
