DoomsdayFAN
Hopefully for the PS4 they make a map that's the size of Just Cause 2, or bigger, yet is as detailed as can possible be. That would rock.
DoomsdayFAN
GTA IV + SA + 3/5 RDR = GTA V. GTA San Andreas, GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption combined. I know that you said "3/5 RDR" because Aaron Garbut said that GTA V will be as big as GTA IV, GTA SA and RDR combined including interiors, room to spare and the underwater world but you have to assume that all these games have lots of interiors and room to spare as well and GTA San Andreas had a big underwater world. Even if GTA V will have all these things more pronounced, I think it won't make two square miles of difference. Another website reported that GTA V will be as big as five times Red Dead Redemption. I was at a gamestop.com. And I looked at "Just cause 2". And it says the map size is 400 sqaure miles!!!!!!! And 100+ land, sea, and air vehicles'! And many weapons! The map of GTA IV is about 6.25 square miles big including the water within the map. The map of GTA San Andreas is about 13.9 square miles big and the water is considered as well. Red Dead Redemption's map is about 11-12 square miles big but only 60% of it are exploreable which means that the map is slightly bigger than the one of GTA IV, so 6.5-7 square miles to be more specific and here is the water considered again. If you calculate all this together then GTA V's map will be more than 25 square miles big (about 27 sqm with the numbers I have given). The map is so about twice as big as GTA San Andreas. There were some map comparisons here after the Game Informer cover-story has been published. Here is what RockStarNiko's map look like. Well, here's RockStarNiko's topic. Look at Magic_AI's post. But to be fair Magic_AI has "created" some more accurate maps, just look at his signature. I have taken the maps of each game and scaled them each to a length of 300 pixel and it looks like this. My map look less stretched so I think mine is more accurate than the one of RockStarNiko. Wait, are you sure that's right? I thought RDR was supposed to be like 2 or 3 times the size of SA? RDR > SA > IV.

aliaseedful
I know allot of people think that a map cannot get big enough, but I think that a map can indeed get too big. Do you find it funny travelling for hours in real life? Would be anymore fun to do it in a GTA game? It's all about exploring........! *Cough* Sir, the quality of the map is what matters. If they made the map as massive as possible, it would be a very tedious task. If you have fun exploring, that's what matters. If you're just driving down cloned highways and landscape, that's sh*tty. If the map is small but detailed enough, there will be nooks and crannies, things to do, and other stuff you can explore

ETA 2020. If GTA V already takes 5 years to develop, how long will an even more complex, detailed, bigger, prettier etc. city take? It's like the biggest downside of the new-gen gaming world, it takes FOREVER for a quality game to get released. Ten years ago it took a year from GTA 3 to GTA VC, then two years until GTA SA, four years until GTA4..... Well, complete the pattern on your own. Lock n' Stock
Saints row was about f*ck all Saints Row 2 was a great game, but Saints Row: The Third was disappointing. Won't bother with 4 if they continue in that direction. And Just Cause 2's map was very big but it mostly felt like copied and pasted scenery. Even if V's map is smaller, I'm sure it will offer more stuff to do in it. Come on, I highly doubt JC2 is THAT much bigger than SA.
Algonquin Assassin
The Just Cause franchise is a sucky clone at best. 400 SQ miles is not happening, why? because GTA is about quality maps, not just 50 islands which all look the same. Bigger equals better! More to explore......! Or do you want to drive around in circles and end up at the same place!? That logic only applies if there's some variation. Although JC2 has snowy mountains, desert, forest etc a lot of the towns and settlements are pretty much copy & paste. In essesnce it does feel like you're going arounds in circles. I'd rather a reasonably well sized map with tons of attention to detail to make everywhere feel different to the last which arguably JC2 fails on many occasions. What if you could get both good detailed and big map!? Do you agree with me now!? YOU CANT DO THAT, PS3 AND XBOX 36O ARE NOT THAT POWERFUL TO DO WHAT YOU ASKED FOR. douggoud
I know allot of people think that a map cannot get big enough, but I think that a map can indeed get too big. Do you find it funny travelling for hours in real life? Would be anymore fun to do it in a GTA game? It's all about exploring........! Actually it's all about blowing sh*t up really. Don't get me wrong, I love JC2, it's one of my favorites, and had a real good vibe about the environment, but honestly, bigger does not always equal better. Most of JC2's map was copy and paste, which made it kind of stale after a while. I mean, all the villages were pretty much the same, water tower, couple houses, maybe a propaganda trailer, it never really changed. But then with a map the size of JC2's, you really wouldn't be able to do anything but copy and paste, otherwise it would take forever to release the game, at least with over 300 establishments it would. I think that even though V's map won't be as big as JC2's, it'll be just as fun, if not even more fun. Sure, there won't exactly be the same diversity of environments that there were in JC2. The probably won't be a swampy area, or a snow capped area (unless Mount Chiliad will have snow on top, but I haven't seen anything that would indicate anything of the sort), but then that's because those aren't really part of the L.A. environment. Panau was a fictional place, so they could really do whatever they wanted in terms of environment.

DoomsdayFAN
If the map is small but detailed enough, there will be nooks and crannies, things to do, and other stuff you can explore True, but look at Arkham City. Great game. Detailed map. However, it was small. After about a month of solid play time, it became almost boring, just because I had seen and done and explored everything there was to do. Although quality is key, nowadays, so is size. With today's technology, there's no reason why they can't make a game that's super detailed with a ton of stuff to do AND make the map huge. Eventually..... I would like to see a map that's as detailed as Arkham City/GTA, yet is as massive as Daggerfall. Haha. "GTA: World" would make my day. ....someday. He has with the help of ingame parameters calculated and that^ was the result. I have taken the maps of each game and scaled them each to a length of 300 pixel and it looks likt this. My map look less stretched so I think mine is "more correct" than the one of RockStarNiko. btw, get the scaling right. gta iv was smaller than that and rdr even more so. (compare junctions etc to get the gta iv map correct) Sorry for my criticism, i admire you making that and i could never do it Ultimately, all the measuring and comparing led to the conclusion that the full-size map images (6000x6000 for GTASA, 6000x3800 for GTAIV, and 7500x5500 for RDR) are all rendered at the same 1 pixel = 1 square meter scale. This makes it a lot easier to compare sizes because they were already the right sizes in the first place! (Meanwhile, L.A. Noire copies the real Los Angeles street grid closely enough that its scale is basically the same as any map of that part of L.A. in reality.) Proof of RDR's correct scale (besides in-game distance testings) is the comparable size of residential houses in Blackwater and Los Angeles visible in this detail: Edited November 28, 2012 by Magic_Al
DoomsdayFAN
If they can make Far Cry 3 so huge, why can't they do the same with GTA V? I guess I'm just suffering from a classic case of "why isn't mine as big as his?" I know GTA V is going to be massive.
