Signal1
Main reason I do missions is to unlock the map in the first place, so I won't really care. That's actually something I'm worried about considering the map is opened from the start. Without that incentive it may seem hard to get motivated to do missions, but on the bright side you can spend much longer exploring between missions so even if it doesn't have a lot of missions the game time will be blown out considerably with side tracks and whatnot. That's what happened with RDR. Often I'd intend on doing a mission and get side tracked doing things along the way. I hope GTA V does that too. I don't think R* has much of a choice but to have the map open from the start due to the 3 protagonist thing, all 3 live in different parts of the map and it would be weird to shoehorn them all into the same area just because other parts were closed off, Not true. They could have introduced the three protags as the game progressed. Start out doing solo missions, then introduce Trevor when certain story point was reached opening up that part of the map, then Franklin etc. They could have done it that way, but didnt. If they'd done it that way they'd have less time to flesh out each of the protagonists, and their stories are apparently supposed to intertwine so it wouldn't work to introduce one, then the other, then the other at later times. Less time? Rubbish. If that was the case they could make it longer lol. Win win.

The Odyssey
The only thing im worried about in this, is that about 10 of the missions will just be introducing the characters and features.
junkpile
Dan said the game will be as the length of Red Dead which is only about 50 missions, and thats half the missions of any other GTA, which in my opinion is kinda sad, i want a long story ! what do you guys think ? 50 main missions would be alright. Sleeping Dogs had "only" 30 main missions. It excluded fillers and let side missions, random events step in instead. Completely optional. Yet the storytelling was good. And Houser said there will be more random events and substories as well in GTA V. So 50 main missions would already be quite a lot. If you consider the different angles by switching characters and the replay value, f*ck, 50 IS A LOT. And if they're all quality missions, GTA V will be the bomb. GTA IV had many missions which could have been side missions... all of Vlad's missions could be side missions. especially - Clean Getaway - Hung out to dry - Bull in a China shop more fillers: - Logging On - Street Sweeper - Easy as can be - Final Interview - Out of the closet - I'll take her - Do you have protection? - Luck of the irish - Have a heart - Jamaican heat all of them had their funny aspects to them, and were sometimes even initializing some major events (I'll take her...), but if you look at the overall number of missions, people say GTA IV had 90(!!) missions, but well, fillers amongst them which can be labelled as side missions. Great! But RDR was lke 80 and it felt like sh*t, my experience was crappy, and I had to make myself finish RDR when I didn't even want to just to see if there's anything worthy at the end. I really hope GTA V will be quick and interesting.

Paulsson94
To people who are worried about the number of missions: Maybe less is more. If you remember from past GTAs, there always seemed to be about 5-10 great missions, 20-25 good missions, and the rest seemed to just be fillers. You could have 100 missions in the game and only 25% or less would be memorable. Maybe, just maybe, instead of a lot of dull missions, they'll have a larger amount of good-great missions. Plus who knows.. Maybe side missions such as random peds are a bigger deal than they were in IV. The missions that the random peds gave out were almost always boring. EDIT: Obviously people before me commented similarly. yes, Quality>Quantity sums it up nicely. But the short and none memorable missions build up to the big missions that we all love so much. Plus they have a great way to tie the story together and make it not feel rushed.

But many of those missions had a great importance because they introduced features like the internet and bowling. It was a lot more fun to get introduced to those features in missions then if you would find them yourself.
Miss Darko
^ But, I don't feel RDR had this issue. If this game's main mission length is indeed comparable to (probably a bit longer than) RDR, then I don't think there's too much to be worried about. For one thing it's not 50 missions, it's actually closer to 60. Which... is kind of a nitpick, I suppose, but that does make a difference. I would expect GTA V to have somewhere between 60-65 missions (which makes it 'about' the length of RDR but a bit longer). For another, missions in RDR are much more multi-layered, longer, and more fun than missions in GTA IV, while also having that sense of build-up and good pacing. In addition to that, we can expect a lot more side missions and overall more content and variety in the free roam. So, GTA V is still doing great as far as how it's looking so far. Of course, only time will tell whose expectations are correct.
TreyCrll
25 Hours doesn't seem very long, but as long as the missions are SUPER-EPIC I'll still be happy. I wanna see a sh*t load of unique, controversial missions that have cliff-hanger endings to leave me wanting to do the next one. And then there will probably be awesome side-missions/activities like heists, sky-diving, BMXing, Motocross, street races, ect. Also there's the "more things to spend money on" thing. I wonder if SA-style customization will make a much needed return? Not to mention all the hours I'll get out of multiplayer(I still play TBoGT online, but it's hard to find a server without modders ).
Dornon2
about average, GTA IV was 40-50 hours and RDR was about 15-20 hours, if you look up what most people have said what time they completed the game the first time. 40-50? Most people can easily get the "complete in less than 30 hours" achievement. I think it's a good amount. GTA missions are quite good and with a focus on heists, it'll be awesome. Dystopia
I did GTA IV second time in 22 hours for the trophy. I think it will be about 25-30 as there's more map to explore.

Signal1
in the first 5 missions I will be like 10+ hours into playing If each mission took a true hour to complete the I gues 50 missions would be ok. Cant see that though
King Of Monra
But is that 50 missions with only the main story? or side missions as well?
Algonquin Assassin
all of Vlad's missions could be side missions.especially - Clean Getaway - Hung out to dry - Bull in a China shop Funnily enough I think in terms of the story Vlad's missions were probably the most important at establishing the tone for the rest of the game. If Niko never worked for Vlad he wouldn't have uncovered that Malorie had been sleeping with him and if Niko never killed Vlad in "Uncle Vlad" he wouldn't have had connections to Faustin and Dimitri and without that connection Niko wouldn't have killed Faustin thus causing Dimitri to sell Niko out. Vlad missions were a key part of GTA IV's story and couldn't have been just side missions.
