Finn 7 five 11
Because they wrapped up the III story perfectly. It's better for them to start another chapter instead of running the same characters into the ground. And they can redo cities without worrying about what it looked like previously, imagine if they had to make IV seem possible in 10 years from what the first Liberty City was? The map would be crappy in comparison. It's just easier to start fresh, and I like how the stories don't drag out forever (Halo cough cough the covenant the covenant the covenant.) and eventually just seem repetitive and stupid. Yes, that too. It would just be repetitive after a while

Loste1
because the cities in each universe are different renditions, so it would be non-canonical if they had all the gta games in one universe
SHARKEM
look at the two versions of lberty city. they are nothing alike. so they just say its a different universe rather than building on the existing model and the limitations that may include. there is also the change in style from cartoonish parodies of eighties gangster culture to deeper likeable modern day characters with some ethical dynamic. that is all. cant remember
I guess to keep continuety. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to have a new go at making an improved Los Santos or Liberty City, they'd have to keep using the old maps. So they could either, A) stick to the old crappy maps B) Make new maps and break all the canon C) Make two seperate canonical stories, a bit like there's two universes or alternate timelines So they went with C. Neodynamics
Because with the separate universes, they have the profitable potential of GTA: Generations. Duh.
*Clutch*
I think lots of peoples dont seem to get the point. I think op means that why there cant be 1 world. So that tehre wouldnt be any problems with returning characters. Not that the map should stay the same or whatever you narrow minded might come up. We have different universes but same city and car names. So its basicly half assed argument.

LTA1992
I still don't understand it why people keep calling it HD. The textures have been improving all the way from GTA 1, so every bloody GTA could be a HD for it's time. If anything, it a multipolygon universe. Look at you trying to sound smart Well, explain then. First question: What is 720 & 1080 resolution? We REALLY need a 'LIKE' button lol
Raavi
Maybe for playstation 5/xbox1280 they could combine Liberty City, Los Santos, Vice City, San Fierro, Las Venturas, London into one game. – overeducated wonk who fetishises compromise
tenpennyisplainevil
R* creates games based on settings, not characters. Miami in the 80's, California in the 90's, both famous settings. Every "era" they go through their cities and create a new universe every "era". LS, LC and VC in the 3D era, now we have stranded at LS again in the HD era. Having characters return from th 3D era can easily be done, but R* doesn't make their games based on characters, they make them because of the setting. Returning to LS in the same universe without leaving out CJ is impossible and, naturally, that would bring gangs into the game as well. R* is all about freshness. No redos at R* games. No old settings returning, no repetitiveness.

Staten
Because their stragetic direction sucks and they keep revisiting the same direction. That would be true if they stuck to the one "universe". Luckily they didn't, and that is one of the things that keeps the series fresh.
TenEightyOne
facepalm Not a very helpful response - if you disagree with the question then please say so... but try to be more mature with your reasoning. @OP: Reading between the lines in R*'s interviews over the years they like to reinvent the franchise with each technological step. This involves stepping completely out of the previous story giving them carte-blanche in creativity terms without having to honour previous storylines. I see what you mean, but I guess it is what it is. From my own point of view it's not a bad thing at all although it would be interesting to know where the story would be now if everything thus far had taken place in the same Universe. aatimedout
Most replies are by idiots in this thread. It would be fun to see classic characters make minor appearances in the game, it would give long time fans of the franchise a bit of nostalgia. It wouldn't be hard for R* to create a HD Tommy Vercetti in his 50's for example. Did it annoy people when they saw Claude in GTA:SA, or when they heard Lazlow on the radio in GTA 4? Chukkles
@OP, you say you understand why 2d never tranfered to 3d but not 3d>HD. They could have linked them all if they wanted to, just because the city is in 2d doesn't mean they can't update it in 3d. Your logic is flawed. Different universes because, just because. They could have carried stories on and updated graphics to fit.

Krusty the Clown
Source: http://www.majhost.com/gallery/ Something like that would be awesome. Just with Cancer City, a safe house in bayside marina and some characteristics of the GTA SA Beta version. Well, maybe for GTA &, but I really love San Fierro. Lordani66
because it would be messy etc. Look at tomb raider, one universe, had to be recycled with new one because the plot of old one was fu***d up after all these games. The same goes for Mortal Kombat. With GTA, R* knew when to stop it before it got out of their hands.
