Secura
Now don't get me wrong, I love the fact that GTA's adding on a bunch of new environments to the game further expanding and encouraging exploration. But I've got to ask a question, what's the point ? What I mean by that is why bother adding countryside. You see in a bunch of new games (Far Cry 3 and Assassin's Creed III) have given the player tons of new ways to interact with the rural environments. You can start forest fires and parkour from tree to tree, the issue that I have with both of these games containing these types of features is, will the GTA woodland and desert feel "old" ?. If we're left without the ability to interact with the game world the way we are in those two titles what exactly is the point ? Trees in most games can look pretty as can sand, snow and ice. Most of the times in gaming these environments are really only used as obstacles and are there for aesthetics rather then having any real purpose, now it just doesn't make sense to me that R* a game studio famed for innovation would focus so much on a return to the countryside and give us no real way to interact with it. This is why I keep wondering if we'll have features similar to Assassin's Creed's parkour system or Far Cry's systems such as animals roaming around and hunting etc, etc, etc. But without any real evidence to support that idea I'm starting to get the feeling that countryside's just going to end up being there for it's looks rather then for an actual purpose. But what do you think, do you think we'll have features built in to make the countryside an interesting and fun place to be, or do you think it'll end up being like the wilderness in GTA:SA an empty lifeless husk ? ThisIsHorosho
...for aesthetic pleasure for the most part! ...sometimes i like just climb Mount Chilliad in San Andreas in the night and look around, just for the sake of it....yes! there's no point, from gameplay point of you, but that is something beautiful that makes you go "wow"...and now imagine that all with GTAV graphics and details! ...nuff said... FranticFatality
I think there will be a lot to do. There at least needs to be campers, animal types and maybe some actual myths to make it really enjoyable though.

Secura
Lightning Strike, have you played Red Dead Redemption? Indeed I have, I love the game to death. However there's a big difference between GTA V and RDR, that being we haven't been shown or told about any of the features that made RDR's countryside so great, hunting, bounties, gang hideouts these were all things that made RDR's wasteland interesting, there's no talk of them appearing in V though. AceHigh11
Lightning Strike, have you played Red Dead Redemption? Good point. I remember when going through some areas, I would ride my horse quickly because of the dangerous animals that would attack you. For some achievement you had to collect some herbs and it was right in an area with cougars and sh*t. Fun times.
ThisIsHorosho
to be honest there're lots of reasons: 1.more space to drive cars/bikes and test their maximum speed...partially due to a low traffic! 2.better chances to hide if being chased by police/fib or other foes... 3.like i stated above - for aesthetic reasons!... 4.side activities! there will be lots of!... 5.animal hunting and killing!... ...those are strong enough reasons to me! Kifflom112
Use imagination? You've got biking of all kinds, just plain fun driving on curvy roads, camping, exploring villages, parachuting, sightseeing, easter eggs(I'm very sure about this), flying and crash landing. That's off the top of my head, but there is even more, even swimming in lakes/ponds/rivers. The huge thing is people just like the overall vibe of the countryside. The quietness(we've got animals not too so/edit: it's obvious), the trees, the open vast space. It's a place to relax when you get tired of the city. And what R* did is particularly something I really favor in games: a large beautiful city, and a huge countryside. This creates a wonderful experience. Whenever you get tired of the bustle go relax in the countryside. When you get tired of the quiet calmness, head back to the action(city). It enhances the replay value. People just love the countryside anyways. Most people really don't care for the city especially now because we were stuck with IV. The city was nice yeah, but it was only a city, and that got old. Anyway, I hope we get like some decent looking safe house in the countryside, that would be awesome. Living in the middle of nowhere.

Though I agree that all of those things sound like great fun they're not really countryside specific, all of those things are possible in the city or at sea, no real reason why they'd be considered as things only possible in the countryside. A feature that's specific to it, y'know something only doable in the countryside. Otherwise I just cannot see the point in having it, it's like having a swimming pool and a hot-tub but you live next to the beach, what's the point. I suppose something that may work out quite well is if we'll able to "farm" in a sense - I mean Trevor does mention "Trevor Phillip's Enterprises" they might have something to do with ranching or whatever .... Thank you, yeah I suppose it seems interesting - it's just a big worry that they'll screw up the countryside by not giving it it's own, flavour. Miss Darko
R* have said themselves that GTA V will be taking from what they've learned from previous games, including RDR. I'd imagine that this includes the aspects that made the vast landscape of RDR interesting (they did confirm that there would be some of those 'random event' things, many of which I imagine would be specific to the countryside, as well as specific parts of that countryside). Besides, there's also plenty of small towns dotted throughout GTA V (also confirmed), and it would make sense that these have their own activities as well. If GTA V's countryside's only point does in fact turn out to just be something to separate Los Santos from surrounding villages, then at least you know that the game is not just Los Santos surrounded by pointless ground, rocks, and trees. There's other stuff out there. Edited November 25, 2012 by Mr. Darko
