Most people didn't know if Black Ops 2 would be "good" before it came out, yet brand equity played a major role in its success. I don't see how it'll be any different for Grand Theft Auto V. The amount of consoles owned by consumers is huge now, and I think GTAs fanbase comes from a collection of fans of all sorts of different genres, since a GTA game incorporates virtually every genre of popular game out there (aside from FPS, but regardless GTA is still partly a shooter in a sense). So people who typically play racing games, people who typically play adventure games, people who play 3rd and 1st person shooters, and of course all the people who play other open-world games, are all potential fans of GTA, and that alone expands their potential customer base far beyond any other genre, and therefore should be expected to outsell most other popular games. Honestly with ~140 million consoles out there currently, I think selling only 10-15 million copies in the first week is a low number. That's only about 10% of the console market, and givent the amount of anticipation for this game, it seems like there would be a lot more than 15 million people who want this game. In the end it's just bragging rights. Everyone knows GTAV will be a more enjoyable experience than any FPS (I myself am a MASSIVE Halo fan, but once GTAV is out I'm going to forget all about Master Chief for a good while). But I just cannot believe it actually, the game is looking very ambitious in the series yet to be honest and of course we all know that right? Take a look at the Grand Theft Auto V trailers for once, there is soo many YouTube viewers out there and does it mean something to you guys? Massimo1997 Posted November 24, 2012 Share Posted November 24, 2012 CoD reached its limit with MW2 (wich was a grate game) after MW2, Activision has been exploiting the exact same formula, with only minor changes, the most controversial thing, the game engine, it has been the same for 6 years, even MW2 looks better in graphics than BOII, I always keep telling my friends why not to buy BOII, but they defend that piece of sh*t game like it was god, but it's good to see the decadence of an exploited saga, this was expected from BOII to not outsell MW3, just like last year when MW3 didn't outsell BO, GTA V is the only game that can outsell CoD, but the game not comming out for PC at the same time as consoles, will lower the sales. Because if GTA V can't outsell BLOPS2 (360 + PS3 sales only) then the world truly has turned to sh*t. I'm pretty sure the original heads at IW were fired when they told Activision they wouldn't compromise their artistic integrity for more money, by turning the franchise into an annual milking of the public teat. Good choice on IW's part then. But the point I'm trying to make here is why do the sales of one franchise really matter when compared to another? If anything, Rockstar is only trying to out-do themselves, not another company. They probably don't give a single f*ck about CoD, seeing as it's a totally different game which is trying to accomplish totally different goals. Now, personally, I don't like CoD very much. The writing of the story is sub-par, and the multiplayer has a lot to be desired in terms of innovation. It's damn near impossible to make a quality game in a year, as far as I'm concerned. But as I said before, this is all my opinion. If people choose to play CoD and they truly enjoy it, then let 'em. The fact is, CoD sells. It's popular. It may not appeal to some people, but it obviously appeals to someone. Another fact is, GTA sells. It's a damn good game to a lot of people, (myself included) but not all people. Not all games will appeal to the same types of people, that is why it's kind of pointless to compare GTA's sales to CoD's. But in regard to the OP, yes, we all know damn well that GTA will sell a lot more than CoD this time around. But it shouldn't matter in the first place. I mean, I can see if GTA and C.O.D were to release in the same month, but they obviously do not. Why even care? GTA V looks to be a tremendous game, but there is the chance that it won't sell even 11 million copies in one week, which is a great feat for a game, even if that game comes out annually. I am starting to think that more than just a few people are turned away by the multiple protagonist thing, and it could have sells fall below expectations. I personally love the idea.
