The PC version sold 477,971 units in its opening week or 77,112 more than Black Ops II (PC). I think i remember a member on this forum saying GTA V will outsell both Halo 4 and Black Ops 2, combined. I wish more people would understand this. You simply cannot compare GTA to CoD in any way, shape, or form. EDIT: Sales do not determine the quality or enjoyability of any game. Player preference does. If people choose to buy and play CoD, and they enjoy it, that is their thing. Just like if we choose to buy and play GTA, and enjoy it, that is our thing. Sure, I can see why people want their favorite franchise to make money so that it can continue, but why does it matter if it outsells a totally different franchise? If you enjoy the game, and someone else doesn't, (or vice-versa) so what? All that really matters is that you bought and enjoyed the game. I think this whole "GTA vs. CoD" thing is completely ridiculous; just as ridiculous as something like "Halo vs. CoD." Play the games you enjoy, and leave others to do so as well. If we consider that GTA IV sold 3.6 million copies on day one and 6 million copies in the opening week at a time when about 5 times less consoles were on the market compared to CoD BO2 which sold about ~8.5 million copies on day one and 11 million copies in the first week today then GTA V's chances seem to be better now! GRINCH ASS BITCH Posted November 24, 2012 Share Posted November 24, 2012 Most of the people that I know that play Call of Duty are casual gamers who also play Grand Theft Auto, so it's not as clear cut as something like "BF3 vs MW3." Grand Theft Auto is a game that we only get once every few years, and I'm pretty sure GTA:V is going to sell a ton. It's kinda sad how most people seem to forget that back in 2008-2009, the install base for consoles were really small, about 35-40 millon consoles on the market, but IV still managed to sell 20+ million copies, now there is over 140 million console, GTA V will do crazy numbers, i wasn't really being serious when i made my signature, the second part i mean, but seeing this, i'm starting to think it will actually happen, GTA V just needs to sell 15 million copies in the first week to outsell both, Halo 4 (3.8 million) and Black Ops 2 (11 million) combined, that isn't really hard considering MW3 sold about 14, i think it's possible. The amount of consoles owned by consumers is huge now, and I think GTAs fanbase comes from a collection of fans of all sorts of different genres, since a GTA game incorporates virtually every genre of popular game out there (aside from FPS, but regardless GTA is still partly a shooter in a sense). So people who typically play racing games, people who typically play adventure games, people who play 3rd and 1st person shooters, and of course all the people who play other open-world games, are all potential fans of GTA, and that alone expands their potential customer base far beyond any other genre, and therefore should be expected to outsell most other popular games. Honestly with ~140 million consoles out there currently, I think selling only 10-15 million copies in the first week is a low number. That's only about 10% of the console market, and givent the amount of anticipation for this game, it seems like there would be a lot more than 15 million people who want this game. In the end it's just bragging rights. Everyone knows GTAV will be a more enjoyable experience than any FPS (I myself am a MASSIVE Halo fan, but once GTAV is out I'm going to forget all about Master Chief for a good while). The XBox 360 sold 11.6 million copies and the Playstation 3 sold 12.85 million copies each until March 31st 2008 which are combined 24.45 million consoles that were sold since the launch of each console. GTA IV was released on April 29th 2008 so a month after the quarter-results from Microsoft and Sony. GTA IV sold 3.6 million copies in the first 24 hours and 6 million copies in the first week of sales. In the first year so until late March 2009, GTA IV sold 13 million copies. March 2009 was a year after the release of GTA IV and at the same time Microsoft and Sony have published their quarterly results. Until March 2009 the X360 was sold 16.3 million times and the PS3 was sold 22.91 million copies which means that both consoles together were sold 39.21 million times. Microsoft and Sony already have sold 70 million copies of each console which means they have together sold 140 million consoles from the lauch until today! The numbers from last year were lower but not significant. Oh, by the way if you want to be fair then you have to compare the first-year-sales of each game. GTA IV sold 13 million copies and CoD Modern Warfare 3 sold about 29 million copies in the first year. But still you're right because if we consider how much bigger the console-base today is compared to a few years ago then GTA V has definitely the potencial to outsell CoD MW3 and BO2. Well, with the numbers I have enumerated it would mean that today there are 5.7 times more consoles than in March 2008, a month before GTA IV was released and 3.6 times more consoles than in March 2009. When I look at the past GTAs and compare it to the sales of Call Of Duty then I come to the conclusion that GTA V has the potential to maybe break the records of CoD and what is even more important, at least for Take-Two, GTA V will have way better long-term sales because it's a title that won't be released every year.
