Why doesn't Rockstar buy the rights to use brands?

Why doesn't R* buy the rights to use and make models for cars in the game?

is it that costly?

Racing game devs do it all the time

well.. the whole concept of GTA is parody.. i don't think it would fit that well smile.gif but still, it would be a lil' bit nice

becouze they are pigs who have bunch of money and want to get more and more instead of spending some for stuff like this for players to feel more comfortible.

Because they don't want to use real brands. They parody car manufacturers, along with everything else in America.

I think it has something to do with how you can go on an all-out rampage with their product. Not sure, though. Or parody, of course.

yup.. i'm pretty sure Ferrari would not like their cars getting burned to s**t by Trevor biggrin.gif

Because R* using their own designs is ALOT cheaper and allows more variety.

For example, it's highly unlikely you'd have seen a Ferrari in GTA IV, because Ferrari don't like their cars related with guns and street racing. So, in IV, we got the Turismo. We probably wouldn't get Porsches, either.

Out of all the asinine responses in this topic, this is pretty much it. That, and I also believe these large public car manufacturers don't want their brand name associated with... the controversial GTA.

The formula of parodying that they have been using for over a decade now works perfectly and they do not need to license any real brands. GTA may be a game that features some racing activities, but it isn't a racing game, so your point there is irrelevant.

Most car manufacturers don't want their cars to be associated with the kind of activities the average player does in a GTA game. In racing games you usually can't go on murderous rampages with your car.

First of all, it is costly.

And several brands are hard to get a hold of like Porsche and Ferrari.

Second of all, GTA is a parody, they want to use fake car brands along with everything else.

lol.gif yeah that most likely does have something to do with it. haha

I'm sure it has to do with some brands not wanting their products being associated with illegal activities. I know that's why Honda pulled themselves from some of the Need For Speed games, due to illegal street racing.

Besides, this is what mods are for. Not only that, modding lets the player pick which cars they want in the game.

One thing I thought of. Everything in GTA has a parody name. Even real places. Is Earth called Earth in GTA? Or.... stupid question lol.gif

America is called America, so yeah, Earth is Earth.

This. If anyone remembers most games that had licensed cars always had minimal to no damage in game until not so long go.

Car manufacturers didn't want their cars being thrashed in games.

Oh and you think Mercedes wants images and videos of their cars running over innocent pedestrians with blood all over thing? Haha

Cars based on real cars is more fun. It's bolder.

Ah. This old chestnut again, eh?

Look. Here's the thing, five things in fact:

  1. Other software houses have exclusive rights to certain car brands. Apparently EA are especially bad for buying up licenses to numerous car brands for use in all their games. So it makes it impossible to have a representative spread of cars. Especially sports cars and top class brands.
  2. As has already been mentioned in this thread, car companies may not want to allow their products to be depicted in criminal activities, car crashes etc, etc. So even if manufacturers did allow their vehicles to be licensed, they would probably impose conditions that would restrict the creative process.
  3. GTA is all about parodying and satirizing real life. If the cars in GTA were real, they wouldn't be parodies, would they?
  4. The brand names that GTA uses are traditional. It wouldn't be GTA without the Infernus or the Blista Compact or the Turismo. Some people are waiting for the return of the Kurama from GTA:III.
  5. Money. To be honest, I don't think this is as big a factor as many people make out. I don't think there would be a great obstacle money-wise to license brands from the car manufacturers. But what with all the other reasons listed here, saving a little bit of money is surely a bonus.
So not having real car names and real cars gives Rockstar full creative scope to do what they like. Real cars just aren't ever going to happen in GTA.

Me and my Buddy we're talking about this the other day. I would honestly just like to keep it the way it is because that's what GTA is to me, if it's using real cars I don't think I would like it as much.

The Notorious MOB

Because GTA is not set in the real world it is set in a fictional universe based on the real world. Midnight Club and L.A. Noire both used real vehicle branding because they were set in Los Angeles.. GTA V is set in Los Santos.

Here's your answer, gta is a parody, manufacturers don't want their cars depicted mowing people down, more variety and it's too expensive when it's unnecessary.
