Wukash13
The BOGT is supposed to have a party vibe to it. GTA IV is supposed to be more mellowdramatic and have a harsher feel to it. Since you start from the bottum and go to the top. And in the lost and the damned you'll see its very grainy and old to make it feel and give you the right vibe. unc13bud
i would say tlad has a grungy dirty look. but yeah, tbogt is supposed to be over the top, with parties, lights and celebrities. that is why it behaves a lot different than tlad as far as performance. those colored polygons create a huge performance hit

B Dawg
TBOGT colors were awfull. Hard to look at. Bringing down the saturation helped.
SmC12
It's not so much the graphics were improved, it's the exact same engine, but the colours and depth of field were changed. It's not all that great though, despite the view being much clearer (especially when looking across the river from Broker to Algonquin) in TBOGT, it causes a few glitches, specifically with textures and LOD models of buildings. In GTA IV, this was covered because the objects in the distance were blurred. When I first played TBOGT I thought the graphics were great and much nicer than GTA IV, but now that I'm replaying IV I have realised that the distant blur really helps create the atmosphere and depth in the game. It makes the city feel so much bigger when objects in the distance are blurred or distorted, whereas in TBOGT you can literally see everything in Algonquin by standing at one end of the island. That's not very realistic, and combined with the LOD issues of the increased distance, it's not as nice as I first thought.

If you're using PC, which I assume you are, then you'll be able to obtain a Depth of Field mod which will create the same effect, more realistically as well. If you search around for mods I'm sure you'll find something, I've seen them used a lot and it's awesome.

Shallow depth of field in games, particularly overuse of it in IV is a flaw. A lack of being able to design or optimize the game better. As a photographer and filmmaker, I say that there should be little to no depth of field if you are looking long distance or for wide views or shots. It's more natural and realistic that way. Depth of field should only really be used to single out and emphasize particular supjects. Over looking the city and seeing soft focus buildings in the back, when not focussing on on a particular subject and just the view is wrong. I appreciate depth of field in games but they are nowhere near perfecting it. The nature of a game moving. The camera constantly moving is going to cause a huge mountain for game devs to overcome. GratuitousViolets
I loved the change in the graphics for TBoGT. Even riding up in the helicopter and the sunset is a beautiful pink colour as opposed to the usual yellow/orange tones, the buildings are more seemingly "lit up" and the world is a lot brighter even at night (less sepia tones). I figured it was something to do with mood and how the character "sees the world they live in". Niko is a much tragic character and it's more fitting he sees Liberty City as a dark, dingy and depressing place (not that it always is). When you play as Luis you see much further into the city, you can see much more of what is there, in comparison to Niko, who is in a small dingy area that gets more and more blurred the further into the distance. With the stand-alone game, Niko's world is blurred and hazy maybe to just suggest his feeling a sense of hopelessness (can't see far into the distance/future) and to make you aware of how 'trapped' he feels in his world, how the world is always going to be a dark, joyless place for him and he can't see far out of it. I dunno. I much prefer the look of TBoGT, but much preferred the gameplay in the stand-alone game. Dum de dum

Kifflom112
I think IV was intended to be a bit darker for the mood of the story. About TBoGT's graphics, I honestly have mixed feelings. It's draw distance is better and it's brighter, but it also looks a little cartoony in my opinion. The cars shine looks plasticy compared to IV's and All of the vibrancy looks sort of as flamboyant as a cartoon.

Saliiim
It seems that TBoGT has higher colour saturation than GTA4 and definately higher than TLaTD. I think saturation is the easiest way to make a game look nicer, not necessarily more realistic though.

Free_Jonte
I think the graphics is better in some points, It's brighter and sharper but the low resolution buildings far away is to clear and then you see that the buildings doesn't look so good. Dragonjack
I always wondered why Rockstar North toned the graphics a bit for TBOGT, it looks much better matter fact and for TLAD in the other hand? It's just a rather "old" feeling of the game itself. I did not liked it at all to be honest.
