Amazing at how far GTAV pushed the consoles

As old as the consoles are , take a look at their RAM - 512 MB...my Galaxy Note 2 has 2gb of RAM...- yes its much newer tech but look at what R* can produce !

The second trailer scene of the bus pulling up to the kerb has a real 'tech demo' look to it - almost like a virtual reality showcase demo from perhaps 5 years ago. The fact that its all in rea-time is jaw dropping.

Kudos to R*..they may not have PC power , but the consoles have been pushed to their limit for V.

The current gen consoles have been taking a severe beating by PC people for quite some time. It seems like they take potshots every chance they get, but the fact is, these consoles have performed admirably. The PS3 has NOT been pushed to the limit by any game yet, and this is directly from SONY. GTAV comes about as close to squeezing everything current gen consoles have, as anything else has.

Obviously they can't compete with the power of a PC that can grow and expand as technology does. PC'S have interchangeable parts that can be upgraded constantly.

However, consoles have a simplicity that is designed for the masses. You don't have to be a computer wizard to use one, and in spite of being left behind as technology rapidly grows, developers have rarely reached the limits of their capabilities. Rockstar is constantly proving that much can be accomplished with these underappreciated machines.

Yes I am definitely at amazed how much is going on on-screen when you look at some of those wider shots taken up in the sky. Just how many in-game assets are being rendered on screen is pretty amazing. It takes a lot of work both technically and artistically to achieve that given the limitations of the consoles ram.

i like sheep, their fur is furry.

Optimization.

Though I don't think there is much left in the consoles (even if sony says so, why wouldn't they..) I am inpressed by what they, from the looks from it, have achieved with gtaV. Nice graphics and a huge map. Kudo's to that.

But I still think it's time for a new generation of consoles, simply because the technology has improved soooooooooooooo much since 2006(!)..So even if you can get 50% more out of consoles (which is really, really, really, loyal imo)Console can do 100 times more with the current hardware and I think they'll last longer since the graphics will be awesome and will still acceptable for a long time and I think I won't be asking for a new gen of consoles for at least ten years. (Gees I'm 32 by then >_>)

I sense sarcasm from the OP. I think the intention was to put down console gamers.

Also, I think a smartphone will need more than RAM to power this beast.

Not exactly. He was making a comparison to how much Rockstar is getting out of such outdated machines, saying that even smartphones nowadays have more ram.

Certainly, processing power is important, but he's right in that it's pretty amazing to have a game like this have such increased draw distances and assets on screen given the memory limitations.

You will need a phone that is four times more powerful and that will take 5-10 years to come to reality

Next gen consoles are STILL quite a ways off. I want to possess a next gen console too, especially knowing it will be packed with the latest and greatest stuff possible, but let's be honest.

1- Even when they DO come out, their capabilities will start to get left behind in 6 months. Will PC gamers begin downplaying these machines again, because technology grows so fast.

2- Newer, more powerful consoles doesn't mean we will get a huge advancement in video game improvements immediately. It will take time for developers to get their arms around the advanced tech. That's what happened with the PS3. The first couple of years weren't anything groundbreaking in terms of games. It took TIME. It is only in the last 3 to 4 years that we are seeing larger leaps in games, and how impressive they have become. GTAV is looking like one of the games that are the REAL measuring stick of what these consoles can do.

The future looks amazing, especially watching what GTAV is shaping up to be. When the next gen comes, i'll be the first to run out and get the PS4, but for now, we have what we have. It's not THAT bad, is it?

I agree R* have pushed it to the boundries, hopefully not too far that it becomes choppy or laggy during gameplay with lots of action on screen.

actually unreal engine 4 (the next gen engine) is pretty much ready to go (it was shown at e3 with a working sdk and on a high spec pc running smoothly) so your 3rd statement is incorrect for the most part.

i believe 100% that we will soon get the next gen especially with the wii u out. you guys may not see it as a threat to xbox and ps3 but once developers start using its power they will make exclusives and drop the older consoles. this will force microsoft and sony to release their next generation hardware.

(this is by no means fact its just my opinion

There's no denying that, for sure. They definitely are pushing the consoles to their limits, just as San Andreas did with PS2. I'm confident they'll pull it off and absolutely nail it. I'd probably go as far to say it's the best game in history, but it's just so hard to compete with the nostalgia of games like Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Goldeneye etc

But yeah, they're definitely pushing the limits, but I'm not surprised. Rockstar are the only game developer with the balls to try something new and push the limits. cookie.gif

It's amazing indeed how GTA V looks compared to IV, and plays too according to most sites that said it runs pretty well considering it's just a demo, the final build might even be better.

I agree with you that once next gen consoles are available, developers will start switching over. The question is how soon before they are out? It's one thing to see working prototypes of future products being showcased at an expo, and another thing altogether to have them on store shelves.

When the current gen consoles came out, there was not an immediate transition by developers. It took some time, with many consumers asking when the really good games were going to come out. There just isn't a lot of buzz surrounding next gen consoles yet. I'm only guessing, but we might be seeing them in late 2013 to early 2014 at the EARLIEST.

Lotus - I see where your coming from but no , that was not my intention.

I have a long history and I dont put consoles down. Sometimes you just realise though how far things have come in a very short amount of time tech wise, particularly in the smartphone arena. Perhaps the most meteoric technological development in history (in terms of improvement over time). The fact that phones are beginning to show PS3 'like' gfx is unbelievable. ( I am not a 'techy' guy and appreciate it is sacrilege to compare the RAM levels of the two devices)

I do think though that the improvement seen gfx-wise over actual gaming gains (enjoyment wise) is petering out. SO much needs to be done under the hood (AI wise , gameplay wise ) that the PS4 could honestly have GTAIV / V gfx and I would be happy , as long as games have deeper gameplay . Lets have peds with REAL AI routines, or have EVERY house enterable, although not immediately different gfx wise, this would be a big step forward.

anyone think why the quality is so good, even the graphics chip and ram is worser then PC?

its because consoles are dedicated. there is no operating system running in the background. what does windows 7 need to operate, like 3GB of RAM? and then you have background programs eating up the juice.

consoles only have 512MB of ram, but its dedicated, to only gaming, nothing else. its why consoles can do what pcs can.

imagine what can happen if consoles have i7 chips, 16GB ram and 2gb of graphics. it'll work forever.

kb - quite so...dont discount I7 power in the next gen of consoles...

considering their 4 years old now and Haswell is starting soon on the PC's , I7 power is doable.

GTA V is a perfect example of a balance of quality and quality! It has precise, small details in a vast open world. I am very surprised how Rockstar managed to push this generation of consoles. But than again, it was expected of them to do so.

At one point during the info drought i really considered it being next gen.

Agree, they have done an amazing job by pushing this old hardware to such amazing limits biggrin.gif

Only thing that bothers me is that when a game is released on all platform, the PC game gets dumbed down to. Ubisoft even said themselvs if assassins creed wasn't on consoles there would be much more features on the PC.

But Its really ego of me to think like this. I dont mind having game released at xbox or ps3 at all biggrin.gif

Exactly icon14.gif. And then this: developers can optimize their games for the Xbox 360's and PS3's hardware. Together with the fact that every little hardware bit in the Xbox 360 and PS3 is dedicated to gaming makes them very powerful.

If developers would make a game just for a certain PC, let's say with the GTX 690, then they could optimize their game for exactly those specs, and deliver astonishing graphics. If a gaming console would come out with the GTX 690, it would be even better because it would be dedicated only to gaming.

So I think consoles don't need really high specifications. Right now games on PC do look quite a bit better, but it isn't mind blowing. A game is still the same game, whether you play it on a console or a PC. I don't think next-gen consoles will have cards like the GTX 690. They don't need cards like that, because the whole thing, software and hardware, is dedicated to gaming, and because developers can optimize their games for only two consoles (or maybe three). As long as it stays that way, there's no need for super advanced consoles.

Add to that the fact that some impressive engines don't even need super advanced hardware. I heard that BeamNG could run fine on a GTX 560. It's all about optimization. And that's why consoles are better suited for gaming then PC's. That being said, PC's will always have the latest hardware, so games on a PC will always look better. But relatively the difference wouldn't be that big.
