I found in IV, with the GPS, which I initially thought was a great feature, took away from immersion. It's clever in the sense on how it's programmed but I found it distracted me from:

A. Looking at the sights, soaking in the experience of driving around.

B. Learning the map.

Will you use it? I might switch it off, so I'm not constantly looking at the HUD but at a waypoint I set (the general direction I must go). Yes I will enter Cul-de-sacs/dead ends but at least I will learn and hopefully stumble upon interesting places and things a long the way.

well see now IV was big xont get me wrong......

but V..... Dude by the size this game has been deemed to be if you dont youll beat this game in a year

just for finding locations for missions alone.

Sorry bro but the GPS will indeed be used for this baby.

V is the equivalent of me saying hey bro im dropping you out in Orlando meet me in Jacksonville in 6 hours with no GPS and im starting you out on the beach oh and you gotta pick up my cousin he's over in Universal Studios....Goood luck sarcasm.gif

PS : It doesnt take away from immersion because Franklin, Michael, and Trev are all familiar with LS already.

we did it for GTA:SA... we can do it now, I like following the icons on the map rather than a set route to go.

If the icon is facing north... well im driving north. It's really not that hard to do smile.gif

Becasue of the GPS, I found it really hard to memorize IV's map, I know VC and SA inch by inch. I still cant memorize IV's map and only god knows why. Ill be switching it off in V. Ill use the target icon but I will switch off the GPS.

It helped me going to specific area but yes it will soak the experience, But since MAP IS HUGE, I think it will be necessary to use GPS

My thoughts exactly. SA was a tricky one in places. Particularly getting across rivers in countryside but I did learn it and I know that map like the back of my hand.

Glad to see others that feel the same way. icon14.gif

The map may be huge but there's so many large landmarks and longer draw distance. If you want to head to the mountains, you'd know where to go etc. I don't think size matters.

I'm defo gonna go old skool and learn my way around and experience the map my way and not be dictated by a GPS.

I've a great sense of direction so I'm sure this will help! tounge.gif

Jeapiece on the hood. biggrin.gif Good show.

I turned mine off in IV and will do the same in V. No point in having it, unles you can set it to Yakov Smirnov or Darth Veider voice.

Well I use the GPS as a guide, but I am also trying to find my own way. Because the GPS gives only the "official way" like no driving in the wrong direction in one-way-streets. So I'm kind of mix GPS and usual Hud

To solve your concern in a more realistic way-

I think only some cars should have the GPS feature. I agree with you, I found myself staring at the GPS feature, and not the actual road. Hopefully Rockstar addresses this in V.

Back in SA, I learned every single road, as I played.

In GTA IV, the GPS made that unnecessary, so I was always getting lost when I wasn't using the GPS.

In V, I think I will use the GPS only for time-sensitive missions, that way O can learn the roads.

In RDR I turned the radar off completely about halfway through the game and it made a HUGE difference to my enjoyment/immersion levels.

It wasn't so much that I had to memorise the lay of the land, but more that I was navigating via a combination of using the paper map and the location of the sun in the sky!

I'd have to think like "ok, it's 5 pm and the sun is to my right, which means I'm facing south, and the next mission is east of here, which means I need to head to my left".

Really helped make me feel like I was in the old west, long before iPhones, GPS, etc.

While it will make less sense in the setting of V, I'll still at least try it.

I'll use it only in case of missions. For exploring the map, i'll just follow the sign boards and the icons on the radar like the good old iii era games.

That sounds awesome! biggrin.gif

Very time consuming it seems, but I gotta try it when I play RDR again.

I think GTA V will be fairly easy to navigate with no dynamic map (HUD) because:

Varied map will make it easier to remember locations.

Its so hard IMO to remember places on GTA IV. Unless you know NY, so many streets, they all look kinda similar, it could take ages.

With an environment so varied, you will allways have something to remind you where you are.

I doubt I'd use the feature, but it is a nice one. I really liked the target location feature in GTA SA. I got a chance to take in the sights and learn the map simultaneously. This Los Santos will be way too beautiful to be staring at a GPS route for several minutes.

I used the GPS only a little bit, my eyes flickered over occasionally to see when there was a forced T-junction coming up when I was speeding down a straight road, in case I needed to get ready yo turn.

But I learned the map pretty well, off-by-heart almost with the GPS on.

The sardonic "You have arrived" voice message was funny... the first couple of times at least... but then I turned GPS off biggrin.gif

You don't? lol

I know like every street in IV. I even know some of the street names. You could put me down in the middle of Algonquin and I'd know what neighborhood I'm in and where to head to get to Bismark Avenue.

I even know what streets head only east and what streets head only west.

Anyways OT: I think I will, but even with it on, I'll probably ignore it. When I'm Michael and first get some free time to cruise around, I'll be turning onto every street that pulls me in, I'll probably explore Los Santos street by street. It would enhance the experience to turn HUD mini map off to some people, but to me, I wouldn't care. Did it with IV. And when I finally got to Algonquin and had the gps on, I still got lost.

Wait, what do you mean Rockstar should adress that? Not everyone wants to waste time memorizing the map. If you want to look at the road so bad just ignore the minimap. Better yet go to the options and remove it.

I plan to turn the radar off as soon as i possibly can. The in game sat nav may be kept on for audible directions, if i so choose, but on first playthrough, i may have radar as "blips only"

The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.

I really want to do this but the problem is you need it in order to lose your wanted level. I've tried losing my wanted level without it in IV and it's way to hard

I did it before with 4 stars and it's a thrill. One minute you think you're free and boom a cop comes outta' nowhere. Or vise versa. I think I'm still being chased, turns out I'm already outta' the chase.

I used the gps (no sound) in IV until I learned each island, which i dont think it effected at all. I learned the map fairly quickly. I'll be using it again in V.

Think some people misunderstood and thought I meant the whole HuD. I mean just te GPS. You shouldn't need a GPS to get away from the cops. A map, yes but not the GPS.

Someone mentioned it being a waste of time? Well, I don't consider just playing GTA a waste of time. With the GPS off you will take the odd wrong turn but then you usually don't do it a second time. You learn the map quickly and naturally. It's not like you sit and study the map. It's a natural progression.

I kind of want to see the map, like Michael didn't explore much or he's not living there long. So I'm looking around the place, thinking, that looks cool. What's down here?

I'm guessing a guy with 20 hours gaming experience with V, that uses GPS won't be as smart with directions as a guy with te same playing time who doesn't use GPS. Hopefully this can help get a head start in multiplayer.
