Plastics, son. Plastics are the future.

I think silicon is way better for the near future.

Clearly both of you are high, the future is Nanomaterial-based catalysts and micro-bacterial reducing agents.

It's best if you decide on what you wanna do for the rest of your life and remember, good opportunities don't come easily.

Depends on the country, you want something in demand.

In Australia for example I would recommend becoming a History/Geography/Maths teacher. Or a Tradie, You know like a Plumber, Bricklayer, Electrician, Builder, Carpet Layer, Roof Tiler ect, because they all pay well (especially the trades.) and aren't all that hard to get into.

However if by chance you do live in Australia and want a trade, i would recommend Plumber or Electrician, the others are pretty labour intensive and wreck you after many years.

No, lets get this right. Steal is the future. Stealing Plastic. And then burning it.

Work in a model train shop. You get to be surrounded by trains all day, get good pay, and very little people to deal with!

Definitely a trade like finn4life said if you live in Australia. Although us lawnmowers/gardeners are doing pretty well too wink.gif

Go into engineering! There's a crap load of opportunities there, plus you don't want to come out of college with a Business degree or a B.S. in Psychology. If you do, expect to at least go to Med school or Grad school- which will cost more money. Don't get me wrong, these majors are great, but Id' highly recommend a more science based foundation. We really don't even NEED a college degree; but American culture kinda makes it mandatory. lol.gif

I would highly suggest a good engineering foundation, either in:

- Chemical Engineering

- Civil Engineering

- Mechanical Engineering

- Environmental Engineering

- Traffic Engineering

- Computer Engineering

- Electrical Engineering

'Plastics' isn't really the best advice, for that's really the basis of Chemical Engineering. Since you're asking the question "What's a good career?" I'm assuming you don't even know what major you want- so don't go this far ahead yet. If you want to do Plastic Engineering, that's something you'll find out later on in your life.

You need to pick an area of profession first- a foundation- then you narrow it down as you progress through life. My best advice would be learn the foundations of engineering (math, physics, chemistry, etc.) As you take these courses, you'll get a better understanding of what you like. For example, if you really enjoy chemistry (after taking multiple variations of the subject and not just one class) you might find you really enjoy it. Then you adapt. You try to find a major that fits more of that category, for example PreMed or Chemical Engineering.

Career eh? Have you ever considered being a vet? Not the kind that wander around with their amputated limbs and severe psychological problems, I'm talking the animal type.

You get to kill cute furry animals, there's a chance you might get mauled by a vicious dog or rabbit, you get to deal with all kinds of bodily fluids and best of all you can get shoulder deep in a cows anus! And if times get tough and work is getting slow, you can always just move to a third world country and switch to people instead.

I'm not going to quote Stu in the QN thread anymore. I'm used to his funny take on everything. Thanks Stu, for being the guy you are.

O.T.

For a career, there is always restaurant business if you can arrange the capital.

- Electrical Engineering

That is what I'm learning right now for the next ~6 years. It's maybe not easy to learn and you need to learn a lot but hell, what is easy in life? It's interesting and a job that has a future.

@grope, Just curious, but why don't you recommend business degrees?

Probably because to get anywhere, he's saying you need to go to grad school for an MBA.

If you're looking for something that probably isn't terribly intensive but will always have openings, then vocational schools for things like welding, repair/mechanics, and other such things are a good thing to look at.

A field that is being sought after more and more these days is information technology. Knowing how to fix computers and other electronics is a skill few know but many need.

So does a US college degree equal a Bachelor's Degree?

It depends... nowadays for people who want to go into 'business', a bachelor's degree really isn't competitive. You need to have an MBA to be able to get a good entry level position. A bachelor's degree is plenty for any other profession though. In fact, a vast percentage of MBA programs are just 5 years and award you a BS and an MBA. I'm not going that route but know plenty who are.

Yes. Designer. I graduated in Product Design, now I'm specializing in Game Design. It's the most rewarding thing I've ever done. Seeing something through from conception to shipping, it's so rewarding. It is a lot of stress, though. And you always have to keep improving, keep researching, keep learning. But the best thing about it, is that you let the engineers and others figure out the hard stuff, then you try to think of new and cool ways to use those technologies. Possibilities are endless.

Nobody can reccommend a good career for you. We can reccommend careers with good pay, but dont bother with that. Find your passion first, then settle into a career. You are young and dont need to rush things, it will come to you naturally. I know you may feel like your off track, but just take it easy. Im in the same boat as you
