WhiskeyFoxtrot
Just one of those things where they change things up in the fictional world for game design reasons. It's like in GTAIV where in reality Manhattan's avenues are one way only (the ones that take you up and down the city), yet, in GTAIV they go both ways. Thing is.. you won't even notice when your playing the game anyway. Yeah, I doubt anyone on here who plays GTA V is going to be thinking, while driving down the highway, "these lanes are just too big!". Yeah, no. douggoud
Yes its because americans cant wait, so they just drive around others. They need wide straight raods because if you try driving fast and turning a corner the car would barrel roll. That's an unfair judgement, there are sh*tty drivers in EVERY country. Don't make it sound like America has the only bad drivers. I drive the 118 405 and 14 every day, 5 days a week, I see people use the emergency lane at 75mpg because they are stupid and impatient. I have seen lane cutting with a CAR... 75 mpg? That's some nice gas mileage, must of been Prius'. lol, sorry I had, to. Anyways, take a look at how driving in India is: Yeah, it could be worse ya know. Also, lane cutting with a car? As opposed to what? I'm guessing your saying it as opposed to motorcyclists. zombie elvis
In real life that harbor freeway would be 4 lanes wide in one direction, but I think every GTA game has never run more than 2 lanes in a single direction, could be a limit in how the A.I. is designed, or just the way they want it. So the road is the correct width but to paint 4 lanes on the road when there's only 2 columns of traffic would also look strange, so they just stretch them out instead. Hristov1984
I know several games that make the lines wide(er) to make it easier for the PC gamer. (It's obviously harder to drive with a keyboiard) Now that's quite a shock for me, I play games with a keyboard whole my life and I find driving very easy, no matter if it's driving in a straight narrow line or just taking corners with precision. It's true. The most popular trucking game series "18 Wheels of Steel" is one company that makes lanes wider for the PC gamer. Here's the official blog page why the lanes are wide in the ETS 2 game of the "18 Wheels of Steel" series: link As you can see: "If everybody was playing our games with steering wheels or at least gamepads, with their smooth and precise control, it would be a no-brainer to use tighter road lanes. However, well over 90% of people playing our games are using keyboard only. We don't want to frustrate these players too much, and you must be aware that it's not really so simple to stay in the lane when steering using the arrow keys even with our current overly wide lanes." A LOT of games do it, especially when GTA V uses semi-trucks...

GroomLake51
Top-down view. As someone who drives in LA, they're much wider than our actual lanes. Don't think it's a huge deal, though.

wallis
On the highway I like to be able to get around traffic. But in IV Star Junction having lanes 2 and a half times bigger did add a feeling of a vast barren wasteland. If the lanes were tighter it would add a more realistic atmosphere, like Times Square in True Crime Streets of New York. It felt tight, like the real thing. Developers just have to space the traffic out so a least one or two lanes at a time are open, so you can weave through.
killahmatic
The lanes are definitely wide compared to reality, but it would be harder to steer while driving at full speed if they were accurate size.

Chukkles
I thought American roads in general were wider (than UK atleast) because you have some really wide cars. Edited November 22, 2012 by Chukkles
