N0Xaeris
Also, the next stage is GTA as a live reality TV show in Russia, but people can dictate what happens via app... Sounds like 'Liberty City Survivor' "I was so excited, I didn't even realize I'd been hit! Exactly!
Ermac_
I think it makes sense because vice san andreas and 3 take place in the 80s and 90s, gta iv was released in 2005 so that would make it 2013 similar with v.
Dick Justice
There's really no reason for them to separate the universes again. The reason they did it in the first place was because they had new hardware to create cities more closely based on reality, which they've now done with New York and Los Angeles. That can continue on with whichever cities they wish to make in the future. I'd place my money on the Bay Area being the location of the next game, but I wouldn't discount them going in a new direction and doing a game set in Boston, Chicago or New Orleans. r0eladn
Thinking about it, why do R* use the same places over and over again from GTA I ? And not the characters? It sucks having to 'bond' with the new characters each game.
oRRe13
in my opinion, instead of bringing back unforgettable characters, they should make new unforgettable characters. Most of IV's characters were forgettable, unfortunately. I still remember characters like Niko Bellic, Brucie Kibbutz, Little Jacob, Packie, Yusuf Amir, Johnny Klebitz, Gay Tony, Billy Gray, Roman Bellic and Phil Bell pretty damn well. GTA IV had the absolute best characters, mostly because they weren't shallow, they actually had some depth and realism to them.

It sucks having to 'bond' with the new characters each game. Mainly because New York & Los Angeles are the most diverse, exciting & well known cities in America. I like that each game has a new cast (mostly) otherwise you end up with really convoluted stories.

Magic_Al
I don't think there's any pre-defined threshold for rebooting the universe. A new console generation doesn't automatically do it. It's whenever Rockstar feels a new game's world and a previous game's world don't feel like the same universe.
meson1
I think they just rebooted for creative reasons. I think that they viewed GTA:IV as a complete overhaul; a chance to re-engineer and re-imagine the whole series. Give it a complete shake up and a fresh start. I think for that reason they drew a line under the previous stories and characters. I suspect the universe delimitation explanation came afterward. junkpile
My assumption would be R* keeps the IV and V era going as long as they maintain the more "realistic approach".
Andreas
My assumption would be R* keeps the IV and V era going as long as they maintain the more "realistic approach". There is no IV and V era, actually it's called the HD-era. The games that will be released for the next-generations consoles are in HD as well as the games on the current-generation consoles so they could keep the HD-era. Well it's up to Rockstar whether they feel like their future games fit to the HD-era or not. cp1dell
Exactly. The Liberty City in IV is what Dan and Sam Houser wanted Liberty City to be. That's what it was always like in their heads. Now we're moving onto Los Santos. They're remaking the same places, but they're still different. Just a more "true" version of the city. Part of me believes that we might stick with the HD Universe, and after they finish the rest of the cities, we might finally get some new ones. I remember back during the announcement a lot of people thought we we're getting Washington DC, that'd be nice to see somewhere down the line.
