University Tuition Fee's in the UK

Recommended Posts

Icarus

The only reason I say it applies is that when you're talking about attending school and discussing the costs, you can't just base it on tuition alone, since that's not the only thing you're paying, but I guess the topic argues strictly on the cost of tuition. I think I merely took a tangent saying people having an issue with the cost of education have a legitimate grievance when you account for other factors with respect to costs.

Absolutely. But again, cost of living is not included in our tuition nor is it included in theirs. Even you in Canada pay probably 2/3 of what the American student does. So it's basically irrelevant when talking about tuition, but even if you consider it cost of living ain't too cheap over here.

Re-reading my response, I'm not sure why I included the extra costs in my discussion when it was strictly about tuition.

I have a feeling I pay less than two-thirds of what an American student does in tuition. For example, I went to one of the top schools in Canada and in my first year (starting in the fall of 2006), I paid about $5,600/year in tuition fees and in my fourth year (fall 2009), I paid about $6,200/year in tuition fees. Also keeping in mind this is above the national average in tuition fees, but not close to the highest, which is around $8,000/year (and this isn't talking about professional programs that have to pay an insane amount, like medicine or law). Of course, if you go to Quebec, you'll pay just over half of that.

Now, if I went to a similar school in the United States, how much would I pay for tuition? I suspect it would be a lot more than $10,000/term.

The one thing I love about Canada, though: we strike a great balance with social programs (i.e. something in between the US and Europe), especially when about 70% of the cost of your degree ends up being subsidized by the federal and provincial governments.

Easily 40-50 grand a term if you went to a top school. I go to one and thanks to some manuevering with need based aid and such based on claiming only my mother's income, we pay in the 30s. With room and board though it does go to 40. You won't get away with 10,000 a term in the US even at a local commuter school. The university that's a mile or so from my house I grew up is in the 30s in terms of base tuition even. But again I do think Canadians are paying slightly more than the Europeans.
