Dan Houser interview about GTA V

Recommended Posts

Glumok

Here is the translation of an interview with Dan Houser, published today on a French website.

I translated it myself, as English is not my birthlanguage, please be kind or gfys, as I did it for free! smile.gif

What was the first thought when you started working on GTA5?

Our first desir was to set the action in Los Angeles. Not only for the urban part, but also in all this gigantic agglomeration,

with the city, surrounding area, the country, desert, beach, mountains... We already dealt with this in San Andreas, but not that deeply.

Because L.A. is the best playground for a gangster ?

It is yes, but mostly we wanted to reproduce precisely this territory so that players can literally drown in it.

For a lot of people who know a little bit LA or even those who live there, there always comes a time when

you do not know where you are. you can have been here like fifty times, you can still go wrong and end up

in a corner you do not know, you do not know if it's dangerous or not, even if you recognize the corner

by the films you seen. This looks more like London than New York or Paris. In these two cities, there are

landmarks everywhere. And then there is the question of realism. I know London better than LA and, in a film,

there is nothing that annoys me more than when we see a character going through the city by car and the

path he takes is absurd. He goes through the London Bridge, then turn and hop, you can see Buckingham,

then he turns again and another monument that should not be there ... In addition, California is a place

where we can exercise our sense of humor. These places are sometimes a bit ridiculous, grandiose,

populated with very rich people who like to show others that they are.

You obviously kept the fake ads and fake brands you've created?

Of course, this is part of our signature. This is very important for us to keep the focus on elements like these because

it allows you to see the world almost as it is and take the necessary distance. Going back to LA, it is also a very inspiring city

when you visit it. First, because we came across lots of strange people, and on posters, ads reflect something

of the spirit of California. You can see how much they are obsessed with weight loss products, avocado, and financial products

to reduce their credit ... All that must be present in the game through these fake ads.

Similarly, when go to the Sunset Strip, one of the most elegant part of the city, large posters are not for cinema:

these are ads for series, TV shows or video games. It says something about that old Hollywood is dead.

These fake brands, there are hundreds that we do on all media, on posters signs, fake websites in the game, etc..

This adds to the realism of the very particular universe of GTA.

GTA5 main innovation is the fact that there is not a main character but three. Why this choice?

We did not want to create a game with a single character anymore. Three seemed a good start because it has never been realized.

We wondered if we needed more than three, but you should not lose the proximity of the player with the hero or heroes.

Also three is a good number because, as children, they are always two against one, with sources of conflict and a lot of

possible combinations to bounce action and change the nature of their relationship.

Why those three characters?

I think this is the main question. The first one we've got in mind is Michael. A tough guy, as in the past episodes of GTA,

but different. So, we wanted him to be a little bit older. We imagined him as if the hero of GTA 3 had grown older, obviously,

we love this guy a lot.We are a few years later, he became rich, and like all people of his kind, who have lot of money,

he housed in a luxury villa in the most exclusive neighborhood of the city and spends his time in a chair smoking cigars near the pool.

In short, he is a little bored and we thought is was funny to add him a horrible family. As a little push to remain

active in his professional criminal life.

Franklin is in the logic way of Michael. He is yougner and typical of this kind of guys who comes from dangerous neighborhood

full of gangs. Before he was a dealer but, after he has been in jail, it is over. So what could he do ? He has no money,

no family, no education... In Micheal he found a mentor, an older man more professional than him. This "Father and son" relationship

could be the beginning of some interesting situations.

Finally, for the thirst character, we wanted to show there are multiple ways to play GTA. This game shows very particulars behaviors

when it is about criminal environement. So you've got players who don't give a damn about the main story and the missions,

who walk for hours in the city and do anything without wanting to finish the game.So here comes Trevor. A maniac with a crazy behavior,

who live in the worst part of his town. For the missions part, he is a old friend of Michael, who owns a great experience of crime but

as Michael is somewhat hypocrite in the organisation of his life, with a facade of respectability, Trevor is way more psychotic.

He is way too horrible to be the hero kind.

With these 3 ones, we've got a full panel of situations and, with this ability to swith from a character to an other, we wanted

to be able to play as the protagonist and the antagonist at the same time, that way one can define wich kind of player he is and,

in a certain way, the kind of guy he is.

Will there be minigames ?

No doubt less than in our previous games, as in Red Dead Redemption, where the poker game was really great. But they will be very good.

There will be a golf game, tennis game, things we've never did before, and it will be very funny to ride a bike, drive cars,

but this is not a surprise at all! Why we chosen these games is because of the context of the California where, for instance, a lot of people

are doing Yoga. After all, when you are not in a mission, players do whatever they want of their spare times (laugh).

The music is still very present?

Of cours. As usual, a lot of of music to listen to. But, this time, there is a big difference : We've made an interactive original sound track

who comes with particular moments : When you drive in a car chase, either you fail or you escape. The music will be different in each case.

It will sounds very natural, as in movies, but using differents technics. I usally say video games is the bastard son of cinema and "ball games"

(note : American expression that designates major sports like basketball or American football). The cinema is a major reference for us,

but if we use the grammar, we are trying to move away from its syntax.

In the trailer, we can see a lot of signs about the economical crisis. Will it be visible in the game?

Not necessarily always visible but it is clear that you will feel it. Back in 2008 when we started the development,

the economical situation wasn't the same but we started to see some signs. As we were going through the development,

to maintain the link with our contemporary era, we had to reflect this aspect through the anguish of people in relation to their credit,

this feeling of paranoia and confusion about the role of banks, for example.

And there are several points in the course of the game where it's noticeable.

Do you think this game could be, in the future, a testimony of what Los Angeles was in the early 2010s?

Not really, it seems to be too pretentious. We only hope the game to be good, funny and relevant to his time.

That those who plays, have tasted a big slice of life, a little more brutal and cynical than the world actually is,

and they keep a good memory. We do not show the world as it is but what it would be like being a little less hypocritical.

I feel that we are working with a large pictorial satire, like the painter Hogarth on English society in the eighteenth century.

GTA has been through differents times, the 80s, 90s, 2000s and now 2010.

Do you think you can use your knowledge for a GTA based in the future ?

We will do this the very second we have an idea. One of our strengths is the consistency of the game world.

We're not necessarily the best writers in the world but we know how to write for this very specific game.

When we decided to make a western, it was with what we knew to do, and we had something to say.

Go to science fiction to make flying cars and laser guns has no interest. The best science fiction are those

who speak of the human condition. So even if this idea is very tempting and, by definition, we do what we want in a video game,

we lack the essentials for the moment: a good reason.

It becomes difficult to surprise players?

I'm not very worried about this yet. In the past, some of our titles have been successful, others less, but as long as we have

the ambition of making games that nobody has done it before, we are not about to get bored. To quote once again an analogy

with the cinema, some films can be told in one page of text. Once the situation snaps into place, you know exactly how it will evolve.

But if you make sure to change the structure of narrative in new ways, it changes everything.

"Memento" by Chris Nolan is a good example. This is the kind of approach that seduces us.

You think GTA has created a genre, as we speak of "genre film"?

I hope so but there are two aspects to this question that are related. On one hand, we have worked on with GTA open world

but also with other games like Bully and Red Dead Redemption. This gives a very unique tone, but we always try not to reproduce

exactly the same thing from one game to another. This can be meaner, more brutal, faster but never the same.

At the same time, our way of seeing things is perhaps the addition of a whole bunch of stuff made by people who know each other for years.

There is always the same producers, designers, writers, the same responsible for the music... That necessarily counts. It is a great satisfaction

to see that the license is still very popular because, unlike many other games, we take a lot of time between two games, we are not

trying to make thousands of variations or suites to make money. When we feel that we have a formula, we make sure that we move on.

Without this requirement, there would not need to renew excitement.

I dont know why, but I have a feeling, that they didnt put the cool minigames and other cool stuff from the other GTAs in GTA V. For example tuning cars, casinos (poker, blackjack...) etc. I think they only add a few minigames, which are way better but still less then in the previous GTAs

Code would need to be changed so much that it would be more profitable to write a new one. There's way too many changes to just move it over like that

Is it just me or is anyone else annoyed with the questions they ask?? We wanna know about gameplay, animals is the new "big" thing and many people want to know about car customization and other gameplay stuff. Not everything but certain gameplay details.

But no they ask: "You think GTA has created a genre, as

we speak of 'genre film?'"

Are u f*cking kidding me? You have an interview with some1 who's heading possibly the biggest game ever created and u ask THAT??? I don't like to generalize but I don't think anyone really cares, everyone already bloody knows GTA have created a new genre.

Today, an other French website is supposed to release their own interview with Dan Houser.

Aren't they trimming the mini games to make better quality ones? Since the old mini games used to be made by a separate team and that's why they were half assed?

I know it sucks mate, but in all honesty i think they don't care about the game as much as we do - they're just doing their jobs and getting paid for it , exactly like Rockstar.

Funny also that some didn't even know the name of the protagonist while seeing the game live first hand. On the GI video, they pronounce Mt Chiliad as Mt ChiliDAD

A mini-scule amount of mini-games. Quality over quantity. The tennis game will probably be a scaled up version of R* Table Tennis, a game in itself. Hopefully the table tennis is there to, because I never got to play that.

RDR had less minigames than SA, but they were better. That's the whole point; instead of having 5 variations on "drive here, do this", you have games that add something the main missions do not have.

If they took out vigilante missions I am going to be crushed...

Is it just me or does it seem like the more we find out about this game, they less that is actually in the game. I feel like all the things we want arent even going to make it in game.

Let's keep in mind guys that the mini game we have already. A full golf course in an actual open world game. Tennis courts that are playable with other protags. Triathlons which include swimming, biking, and running during the event. Those three as examples for most players are quality over quantity.

Also each protag will have one or two specific to his name. For me a round of golf or tennis is much better than say darts or bowling. You are in the sunshine outside completing the golf, tennis and triathlons in this huge world. biggrin.gif

I think GI has said there would be ambulance missions, police, and so on. Minigames aren't everything and we only know like 2% of the game, I'm sure R* won't disappoint us and from the vague preview descriptions it looks like we'll have much better things than minigames...
