Shaunr
Note: The actual scales have been determined after re-examination (not by using square miles btw) to be wrong! you can still see the map comparison I made, but please know that the RDR map is too large. Right now I'm saying it's slightly too large. Magic_Al is saying it is way too large If you haven't heard yet, the size of GTA V is bigger than GTA SA, Red Dead Redemption, and GTA 4 COMBINED. I made a pretty accurate representation of what that looks like, and in comparison to the JC2 map. Each map has been scaled so the normal road width (2 lane road) is the same. For Red Dead Redemption, which roads do not work in terms of lanes, it appears that twice the trail width= the width of a normal 2 lane road in the other games. The image is in very high res so you can easily check for yourself. Make sure you’re using similar roads though. So all maps should be very accurately represented. The area highlighted in orange represents the approximate size of of GTA 5. (Note that some of the size will go into interiors) Here is the high res image: http://imgur.com/UlVj7 Here is a small image: I also posted this on reddit in /r/grandtheftautov and so far some people have complained it's not to scale, and that everything should be much smaller than how it's represented because JC2 is 400 square miles, and GTA SA is only 14 square miles. I say that you cannot compare two different game's virtual square miles, as I've seen comparisons which have done so, and there's no way GTA SA is that much smaller than JC2. This comparison for example: http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/4852/...game_worlds.jpg but let me know how you think I did, or whatever. Anyway, the game is going to be much smaller than JC2, which I'm pretty happy with because that game was just too damn huge. RockStarNiko
RDR too big and JC2 map too small. Scale all wrong JC2 is 400 sq m apparently, so that is 20 miles x 20 miles TWENTY MILES wide San Andreas is ~3.75 miles wide RDR is less than 4 miles wide Scale all wrong
Reemer
Scale is wrong, but it does give us an idea of how big the map is. Good job OP

archiebunker
IIRC, Rockstar had mentioned that RDR's map was twice the size of SA's, and I've read before that LC is about the size of West Elizabeth but not yet half the size of SA, so if any of that is true, it more or less jibes with your calculations. Edit: No idea about JC2. Edited November 9, 2012 by archiebunker

Shaunr
Can you recreate an accurate version of the map you just proved to be inaccurate? Thanks, mate.. Sheeeeiiiiit. There's too many maps. also, for games that don't have similar roads like I'm sure WOW's roads are weird then I would have to search through videos where i can find a similar road or something. I would do it, but I think it would take too long.
GrandMaster Smith
Wow nice detective work there playaindahood, I always knew SA wasn't That small.. Interesting to see if your calculations are correct and we really do get a map nearly as big as Just Cause just with R*'s attention to detail. GamerShotgun
The scale of the map depends on how big the models, characters, etc all. Of course it's not accurate.

Yeah I could probably do that, although it may be kind of hard to do with the 2D ones because the roads are kind of weird. unless someone can think of a better way to scale things by basing sizes off of something else

Shaunr
So how many square miles large is Los Santos in your estimation? It's hard to say because a lot of the map size is going to be going int interiors. But since GTA SA was about 14 square miles, and the maps combined= a total of about 49 square miles. Maybe 9 square miles into interiors and stuff so 40 sounds like a possibility.

Signal1
Until you know the extent of the inside of buildings, this us useless. If 50% of the map (not possible) was available it would reduce the map by how much? Consider that. I think most people are over hyping the map. Be warned of dissapointment. Like I was saying in the image, video game miles are inconsistent so it's not going to be like real life. It may be close, but it's hard to say for sure. Magic_Al
RDR is big but not bigger than GTA SA. The area within RDR's gameplay boundaries is 6-7 square miles, as measured by figuring out the scale of in-game distance stats to pixels of the map. GTA IV and the accessible area of RDR together are roughly equal the area of GTA SA. It would seem GTA V is simply twice the size of GTA SA "and then some", let's say up to 30 square miles. We don't know how they're counting the area of interiors but GTA SA had a lot of interiors and so did GTA IV especially if they're counting every bit of accessible space like subway tunnels and every floor of every apartment building with a stairwell. Yep the article said the combined interiors and exteriors. Not just exteriors. And it makes me wonder if the ocean diving will make an impact on the map size. Choco Taco
I posted this in another thread: GTA San Andreas - definitely around 14 square miles. GTA IV - definitely around 6 square miles. Red Dead Redemption - not sure. I'll just guess 10 square miles. Total - 30 square miles
ChillyPhilly
Panau is around 400 square miles (1036 square kilometres, ~20x20 km, but I'm sure it's more). I'm sure that'd be the straight-line distance from north to south and east to west and would include water area. San Andreas is about 13.9 square miles (36 square kilometres; ~6x6 km, although it isn't that much). Use this as a measure.
DeafMetal
Very nice man I did some sketchy moving and tweaking to compare the sizes of all three. According to your calculations: Liberty City is a little below half of San Andreas. I would put it at 40% from the looks of it. Liberty City to San Andreas San Andreas is a little over half of Red Dead Redemption, I would put it at 60%.San Andreas to Red Dead Redemption San Andreas and Liberty City are ALMOST the size of Red Dead Redemption, I would put it at 90%.Liberty City + San Andreas to Red Dead Redemption So if your estimates are correct, then we should expect GTA V to be a little over twice the size of Red Dead Redemption. Not too shabby.
