By the way, I play by ear, come up with the best stuff in my head that I can straight away produce onto a keyboard, but currently I just express my stuff on a crappy Casio. All I need is a professional machine and you'll see what I can do tounge.gif

By the way all the music I've posted in this thread is sh*tty crap I made on the most n00bish program: Fl Studio. I can make 999999x better things on a professional workstation.

I wish I could do that. I want to be able to play by ear. My life would be so much better... tounge.gif

As for calling FL noobish... Well... It's not. It's noob friendly, yes, but not noobish by itself.

I could play by ear for as long as I can remember tounge.gif I can easily analyze music down to all the instruments used and their tunes, and can recreate them. As soon as I hear a tune, I can play it straight away on a piano/keyboard smile.gif It's just a gift of mine.

I guess you're right, it is a very professional program, but I just hate all the idiots on youtube who create a piece of crap and call themselves producers lol.gif

@Edmachine

Good points about 86: Nice background sounds and overall concept.

Bad points: Lead synths sound a little plain to me. Some tweaking\automation would have been welcome.

82 is nice as well as a concept, I dig the bass and and the percussion but I don't like the stockness of the lead synth.

you can listen to my folk rock song 'Sit With You' here

or my old punk band (me on vox and guitar) here

another project of mine here

Theres a tonne of other stuff flittering about, but when I can be bothered to mix, master and distribute these I have no idea.

Well...

I wish I could do that. I want to be able to play by ear. My life would be so much better...

Its not very difficult once you pick it up. A good way to start is by humming to a song (any song really). Just try to focus on a certain instrument (I find bass the easiest, but really... you can humm to pretty much any instrument). When you hit the right note you can feel/hear the resonance (its rather pleasant). If you keep doing that then you develop a natural feel for different notes.

From there on its rather easy to translate what youve got to an instrument. Just use the same technique. Only difference is that youre using your own idea and voice and expressing it as music.

The more you practice it the better you become at it.

3niX is completely right, you just practise and get better, same with everything. I myself have only just started to to delve into the world of playing by ear, but I'm addicted to the whole process.

You do get better quicker than you would imagine, it just takes dedication and perseverance.

Pointless experimentation from a non-musically inclined person; there's a reason why I chose that pseudonym.

Man, I gotta start catching up with y'all.

My man gamesguru on the beat? That's what I'm talkin' about!

So if I'm still welcome, I'd like to update, 'cause I just updated on YouTube, created a new channel, having all this old sh*t on my old channel - pictures of Soulja Boy as a background?

F*ck outta here! biggrin.gif

@games' it has indeed been a while from the last time I dropped by, you have really done the topic well, brother.

I'll try and contribute more often.

Thanks, and good to see you back Cheat. I remember you tweeting me a track you did for someone a while back. I still need to go and listen to it. I'll do that in the next few days. Have you got any recent content you wanna show off?

As for me behind the boards, I've still got a long way to go, but the first step is having the stuff to work with at home to learn. College has helped immensely as well.

Well, I gotta say, I'm honestly rather disappointed with the amount of music I've been putting out, and as far as anything worth posting into YouTube goes, I only have five beats up right now, and you prob'ly have heard a couple out of those.

Anyways, think I've got two recent n' decent ones I'd like to point out:

thumbs up for clever naming, lol.

I think these two represent the two styles I work with, the latter representing a bit more of a mainstream-friendly sound and the first being based on the sample (which is, by the way, just amazing) heavily - I'm still trying to find the happy medium, nahmean?

Aight, I think I see the vision.

Do you also own a mic or is it just about the production gear you was showing off?

No matter what, seems like you're gonna have a hell of a arsenal to work with, really like the picks you've made, and if you keep on delivering such strong lyrics, you're gonna go far brother. All the best icon14.gif

Cheers man, I appreciate it. I'll check your stuff out later on as I'm listening to some podcast right now. As for a mic, nah I don't own one. Because it wouldn't work well in my crappy room (which I might add treatment to if/when I mix later on down the line), but I can just use the studio at my College. I recall my tutor saying that it was like £30hr for personal use, but others have been using it so far for free (I think its okay during College hours). So when I do get around to rapping again, I'll just use their studio with the great mics and such. I wanna get some decent beats going before I start rapping again though. Just working one step at a time.

I'm still working on a website too, which is almost there, so it's a busy period of my life. But you gotta work hard to get the payoff. Good luck with your endeavours as well man. Some goes for everyone here working hard with music, or whatever else.

Haha, you still working on the website? Damn, you been at it as long as I remember biggrin.gif

No offense though, I mean, I definetly understand it's a time-taking process and probably not the most important thing in your life as you're in College and all that.

But hey, it's amazing how your school offers you all that, you must be really grateful.

Also, regarding this subject, I've always had a question to ask you - are you in a media-specializing college/syllabus (prob'ly not the right word) or something, or are you "just in" college, taking all these musical courses and stuff?

'Cause, hearing all these stories about your college years, you seem to be going to the very type of a school I'm hoping I could study in some day, probably after secondary.

Hope you understood something, I'm pretty good at english but don't really have any type of a knowledge in school-related words. lol.

Well, I've been going to this college for half a year now. This College specialises in art & media. So music, film, photography and all that good stuff. There is still stuff that needs to be improved on because they recently redesigned/built the place, and we are waiting on more practical projects like working with actual bands and stuff. But its perfect for me in the sense I have no previous musical knowledge anyway, so no matter what, I'm still learning.

I did sound engineering and music technology degree at south staffordshire university, was the best 3 years of my life. Smoked stupid amounts of weed, and made tunes all day. Right next too the dance studio with all the birds aswell, you know where i spent my lunchtimes haha.
