USAPatriot
Salton Sea & Slab City [This might be too far south, but lets think about it. Along the border of Mexico is Imperial County, home of the infamous Salton Sea (Salton Sea Map) and the lesser known Slab City. (Slab City Map) So what are they and who cares, right? Let me explain. (Uninhabited buildings dot the highway along the Salton Sea area.) (The area used to be a destination families would go too, not anymore.) (Mass fish die outs in the Salton Sea are a mystery at this point, and a constant problem.) Salton Sea - The Salton Sea is a rather depressed area (Economically and physically) along the imperial and Coachella valleys in southern California. The Salton Sea is infamous for it's environmental decline and salty shallow water. They are closer to San Diego than Los Angles, but Rockstar says a "re-imagined" southern California. This area is rather remote, and known for it's lack of law enforcement in such a remote area. A few remaining businesses trying to attract people to the giant sea, struggle to survive. Seems like a good area to make a knockoff of in GTA V. Working for some shady person here, or tossing a few bodies in this remote location.... (Slab City, California.) Slab City - Whats Slab City? A former military base now turned into a glorified hobo camp strife with crime, drugs, hippies, and bums. The hundred or so people that live there claim it is the last "free" place in America with truly no law. Drugs are a way of life here, and people can almost literally get away with anything here. The state of California has continuely tried to shut down this area and evict the people living here who pay no taxes. To learn more about this strange place, there are limited bits of info on it online. Seems like a great thing to "re-imagine" in GTA V for working for some crook, or a good place to lay low, that even the local sheriff doesn't want to get involved with. (Salvation Mtn.) This area is also the home of Salvation Mountain, a giant "art" project by area residents and self proclaimed artists. I could see a spoof on this. "Damnation Mountain?" Conclusion - So this might sound like a wishlist, but its not. I could care less if this was in the game. But it just sounds like too good area to forget about in GTA V. Slab City truly seems like the kind of shady area that Rockstar would like to spoof and make part of their storyline. I could see it, can you? Do you think this is a good idea, or valuable in anyway? What would you improve, or areas you think that could realistically be in the game? Thank you for your time. Blame Taking Fool OGF
Whether or not its in the game the way you described this place it sounds like an AWESOME concept for GTA! And considering Rockstar like to do their homework on their settings and the fact that as i read your description all i could think of was thieves landing from Red Dead im hoping soooo much they include a take on this area! If i was head developer designing the city/map and you pitched this idea id make sure you got a raise!
bluesboyjr
Good quality post, well done. I like the sound of those places - they definitely seem like somewhere that would fit the game. I especially love that first photo - GTA has always been great at showcasing the dirty, ugly and shady sides of America. I can imagine a large "badlands" portion of the map in the game perfect for drug deals, exploring and just providing a great contrast against the shiny riches of downtown Los Santos. Blame Taking Fool OGF
Furthermore, first thing me and my crew are gonna do on day of release is meet up (we all live in the same area) grab our pre ordered copies, go home, install the game, watch the opening intro, form an xbox party, fire up a private free roam, grab a four door car, and just drive around , exploring, and Slab city is the EXACT sort of cool location/stuff we're hoping to come across! That and all the easter eggs and Rockstar parodies and comedy and whatever else they have cooked up!
deli2000
I had genuinely not heard of these places before. Thanks for the informative post.

Helsinki
Another great thread! I've been fascinated with both of these places since I first read about them. Salton Sea is even in my bookmarks! I'd definitely love to see them in GTAV and wouldn't be surprised if they were included.
MIKON8ERISBACK
Salton City was abandoned in the 1970s because fertilizer running off from farms seeped into the "sea" and caused mass fish kills which repelled vacationers from the area. polvofiloso
We go four wheeling out there all the time. Would be cool to visit the area in GTAV. By the way, also very close to the areas noted by the OP are the Imperial Sand Dunes (More commonly known as Glamis). If there are going to be sand dunes in the game, these would be them. It's a huge recreational destination for Southern Californians and would be a great addition to the game, even if they have to be portrayed as being a lot closer to LA than they actually are. Also, the water tower spotted in one of the screens is about the same distance south, though not quite as far east, from LA. By the way, there has been some columnar cacti spotted in the screen shots. There aren't really any tall cactuses like saguaro's in California, you have to go over to Arizona to find them. But it would be cool if there were Ocotillos and Joshua Trees, which are abundant in CA deserts.
Death2Drugs
I was thinking about the Salton Sea area as well. It'd be an interesting area to add. We could have drug runners hiding within the abandoned housing, or it could be the location of a great myth. Slab City sounds interesting as well. MrcTOtheJ
Never heard of either of these places. But I'll be damned if both of them don't sound great for a GTA game, even if they aren't in the LA area. Who knows nothing solid (that press release just cemented IMO that LS is the only BIG city) has ruled out a smaller city based on San Diego yet, like there was Alderny in IV which was technically in a diffrent state and was a diffrent city...could be like that sort of. But even if the only city is LS and the rest is small towns it'd still work seeing as they can re arrange things like you said.

USAPatriot
Glad everyone agrees and gets the vibe from these places that I do. Thanks for the good discussion. Anything else people want to add? I can just imagine hanging low in one of these areas to stay away from the long arm of the law.

thecocoking
It sounds like an ace place to dispose of bodies and have a remote hideout as such, just adds that extra bit of cum-in-your-pants that we all want in the game...... I think R* will have already made some sort of remotey place similiar to this but I doubt if they actually created salton sea bcos it is too unrelated to los santos although is a sick idea well done
TenEightyOne
Who knows? Certainly would be cool... and is reminiscent of the area near the Big Ear
dantes24
Rockstar could implement that Salton Sea in GTA V and create it looks even more like penis.

Zip87
Remember the shootout in RDR at the old ghost town Tumbleweed? Something like that would be amazing at the Salton Sea.
USAPatriot
It would seem like a good place to have some hippie you work with and his odd ways. He could live in a RV with his strange wife, and have a dog. It could also be the home of maybe some redneck, like the guy we see in that new "Artwork" released a few days ago. There are just so many possibilities.

Helsinki
I know all of you know how to search for videos on YouTube, but being the nice guy that I am, I did it for you. Here: "Living Without Laws: Slab City, USA" "Saving the Salton Sea" "the Salton Sea A3" And there's a lot more about Salton Sea from this channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/saltonseadoc This stuff truly is made for GTA! WhiskeyFoxtrot
These locations would make for a great parody in a GTA game. I have hope we will see one, or all, of these places in GTA V in some way or another.

USAPatriot
Yes! According to the new Game Informer magazine, the Salton Sea region is re-created in the game! Called it! We also hear about an area called "Blaine County" and Mt. Chiliad returning. Awesome news mate. Cannot wait! Especially with the random finding of drug deals gone wrong (two cars with dead bodies all around) a la Breaking Bad or No Country for Old Men. USAPatriot
So what do you think they will include in this area? We got a little bit of info from GI, and some of those new images showed areas that could have easily been the Salton Sea or empty towns. I wonder if "Blaine County" mentioned in the article is located around Salton Sea. My guess is they will have a Salvation Mtn knock off, and probably some "burning man" or hippie camp such as Slab City.
