Ok Brian, CoD has never been refered to as a MMO by anyone ever except for you. Now you have your idea of what an MMO is and I have mine.

You cannot say I am wrong and I cannot say you are wrong. There is no official guideline by which to settle our argument. I should however point out that by your definition, almost all infinite runner games on android are MMO games.

AND f*ckING NO. MOBA is not a subgenre of MMO, it's a crossover subgenre of Action RPG's and real time strategy.

ROFL, that's hilarious. I'm out of likes, I'll get you guys tomorrow xD

I can say you are wrong, Fireprufe15.

It is your opinion that they are not MMO's.

But it is a fact that they are. It is not my opinion and I do not define MMO myself - it is a fact.

You still think many players is a requirement? Really?

Vindictus WOULD STILL LIKE THAT WORD WITH YOU.

BUT DESTINY WANTS YOU TO STFU: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-07-04-have-traditional-mmos-had-their-time

(lol)

What you call a MMO, is merely the norm/traditional - it is not a requirement, and long ago this all was figured out .Gamers may not know, but game industry has found what really makes an MMO, and it is not player counts per session, it's the meta that makes an MMO. The stuff that is between your session.

PLENTY of MMOs have low player counts per session.

@Silver - rofl, you will get a like, too.

Fact is this is not the place for it and I should never have started. Just because you say something or because one developer calls his game a MMO, does not make it fact. The same goes for me. We are arguing semantics and I am sick of semantics.

You are arguing an opinion based on your preconception, Fire. I am straight out telling you the facts of MMO Gaming. Period. MMO does not mean "MMORPG", and it does not mean "a lot of players in the same time" - people think it means that, but I have shown you (whether you refuse to look or not) that that is not the case at all.

@kindled, yea, top sentance is for you and Game512, bottom third for silver :p

Here's a bunch of people discussing Defiance and how people think it's not an MMO just because it doens't have all the players at once - and they are wrong:

http://steamcommunity.com/app/224600/discussions/0/864973980830552071/

You'll notice a lot of subjective OPINIONS in there on what an MMO is, too, what a given INDIVIDUAL requires to call something MMO. Well, that individual's opinion does not matter, because of facts.

Facts like Vindictus is an MMO.

YOU are arguing an opinion. I am telling YOU the facts. Type MMO into google right now. This is the definition you recieve:A massively multiplayer online

game. A computer game in

which a large number of players

can simultaneously interact in a

persistent...

That is a fact from a dictionary. You are telling me opinions, standpoints and speculations about a loosely defined term and it seems you have some problem accepting that you aren't 100% correct.

And did he even mention Defiance and where did he mention that MMO is based on player size? (Firepurfe15)

Defiance is MMO, well actually it is a bigger than MMO (multi-platform)
http://www.trionworlds.com/en/games/defiance/

If devs write that it is MMO then it is, if they are write that it is FPS, then it is not MMO (in case about CoD; MMOFPS)

Now give it a rest. We are all giving opinions, but facts are that CoD is not MMO, nor is BF3, nor will be BF4. (I have 800h in BF3, I should know what is it)
DICE and EA are always reffering to BF3 as FPS, multiplayer FPS that is. Not MMO.

What you're arguing about?

Facts.

A massively multiplayer online game (also called MMO and MMOG) is a multiplayer video game which is capable of supporting large numbers of players simultaneously.

A multiplayer online game is a multiplayer video game which can be played via a game server over the internet, with other players around the world. Although, another genre of multiplayer online games is taking over the scene. MOBAs (Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas) have become one of, if not the most, popular genres including titles such as League of Legends, DOTA 2, and HON.

These games differ from MMOGs in that they do not create a persistent world, but create a playing arena for the purpose of a single game or round. In other words, they rely on a game listen server used only for that round, and there can be numerous servers all around the world. MMOGs on the other hand, rely on dedicated servers, as these games must be running continuously.

No, I am telling you clear and utter facts.

Your opinions are blinding you to reality.

This is a f*cking fact. Here is the definition of MMO:

(video games) A massively multiplayer online game. A computer game in which a large number of players can simultaneously interact in a persistent world or can potentially play against a large number of players in matchmaking.

See? Directly from here: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/MMO

K?

And what does that describe?!? CALL OF f*ckING DUTY.

a large number of players can simultaneously interact in a persistent world or can potentially play against a large number of players in matchmaking.

OR is the key f*cking word.

And keep eyes peeled, and sit tight, because I am bringing proof GTA O is MMO in moments.

Holy sh*t, this MMO debate is still going? WOW........arguing semantics is futile and ridiculous.

How about we discuss GTAV on the PC again? I'll start by asking something again. How do I peer into the coding files of this game via the PS3 GTA V disc? What programs or software do I need?

I wouldn't count a matchmaking system as MMO, that definition is non sense. A MMO requires a direct relationship between all people, it could be not directly in-game with all people at the same time but in an universe or something like that. It's not the case on GTA Online, what you have it's only in your own world.

GTA Online is MMO, FACT.

Everything I have said on the subject has been a fact - call of duty has more players than vindictus, it's more mmo than that, yet vindictus is an mmo.

YOUR understanding of what is MMOG is WRONG, PERIOD.

It does NOT take many players at once just to suit your OPINION - that is a MISCONCEPTION.

GET OWNED NAYSAYERS, YOU WILL ALL LEARN EVENTUALLY THAT MY WORD IS GOLDEN.

CoD's matchmaking system IS the universe. Matches are like traveling to the map and fighting, then going back home world to the Lobby.

I am correct - period - momos will refute it, but your DENIAL is a luxury that is TIMED and you will change your tune as you learn the facts for yourself.

Period. I am correct.

Plenty of MMOs you never ever even see another player.

A massively multiplayer online game (also called MMO and MMOG) is a multiplayer video game which is capable of supporting large numbers of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet. Many games have at least one persistent world, however others just have large numbers of players competing at once in one form or another without any lasting effect to the world at all.

Matchmaking is not MMO, GTA Online is not a MMO. They said they want to make GTA Online a MMO one day, but it's not a MMO nowadays. All players need to be connected in some way, it can be as a persistent universe or something like that. GTA Online is only for you, and you just invite players to your "room". That's not MMO. There is no a persistent relationship between everybody.

While we are playing GTA, Russians are living it...

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=86c_1380012861

Russians have always been living GTA

lol

Jesus Christ I thought I said drop the MMO talk. It is impossible to define now so lets all just ignore the term. Arguing over it will get us literally nowhere other than creating hate between members for no reason other than getting into a posting war over a stupid term that shouldn't exist anymore anyways.

Seriously, just f*cking end it. We do not need this type of hate fueled here. We are all antsy waiting for the announcement so we all are easily agitated and react without thinking (myself included, my bad R34lD34l and Albert Kike).

We just went through a lot of posting bullsh*t that doesn't contribute to anything but the possibility of members getting banned. Let's turn our frowns upside down!

Funny how I am one of the ones who fueled this argument the most at first and now I want it to stop (not because I or anyone is wrong, but because the debate is pointless since no one will agree and there is no true definition of the term)

And I believe you just need an iso file Fire but like was said, I wouldn't talk about it in the open here. Not sure how they monitor PMs but it is not something I would discuss here at least until the PC version has been released. Seems like Rockstar is not liking us digging through their files lol (hello, PC gaming communities have been doing this for ages).

A persistent world (PW) is a virtual world that continues to exist even after a user exits it, and to whose state user-made changes are to some extent permanent.[1][2] The term is frequently used in the definition of massively multiplayer online video games and can be considered synonymous with that class of game,[3] including other narrative forms of amedia franchise.

'Persistence' comes from maintaining and developing a single or dynamic instance state of the game world that is shared and viewed by all players around the clock.

Quite unlike other types of games, the plot and events in a single-permainstance-world game continue to develop even while some of the players are not playing their characters. This is similar to the real world in which events occur whether or not they are directly or indirectly related to a person, and (for instance) continue to happen while a person is asleep. Conversely, a player's character can also influence and change a persistent world to a degree that varies from game to game. Since the game does not pause or create player-accessible back-up files, a character's actions will have consequences that the player must deal with.

---

Read this attentively. How the world of Call Of Duty changes when you're not playing? It does not changes.

Moron? THEY ARE. ITS CALLED PERSISTENT ECONOMY. ITS CALLED CREWS. ITS CALLED YOu'RE WRONG. PERIOD.

Persistent economy between thousands of players at the same time? Where did you see that?

Are you more right than Rockstar? They also says it's not a MMO... but they expect that some day they'll do a GTA Online MMO.

But this is only the beginning for GTA Online. Though it ties into GTA 5 as a multiplayer component, it is separate and The Benz reveals that the ultimate goal is a GTA MMO. The Benz claimed Rockstar has plans to turn GTA Online into a persistent online world with 'million of people to coexist'. A GTA MMO, says The Benz, is 'where we expect to arrive'. Though GTA Online is the 'child' of GTA 5, says The Benz, it is nonetheless destined to become a fully-fledged game in its own right. Rockstar's plan is to keep GTA Online on 'the path to a great MMO'. That's about everything we could gather from the lengthy issue that isn't already known, but it all sounds pretty exciting to us.
