PC Version of GTA V Discussion

Rockstar smackdown, damage control, people will take "nex gen is on the way!" instead of "pc is on the way!" and be wrong, and it's bad for R*. PC is guaranteed, the screens are definitely from PC, and all videos of the game that are official have questionable scenes. There are no plans for V on newgen yet, because it's not a lucrative market yet (but I'm sure they expect it to become one perhaps). Nexgen upcoming may never be a market that can support them, but that's pushing it: Have to see what steam's announcements are, and whether their living room solution can even be competitive or not (price point is the main concern) before any real speculation about the nexgen can be done (aside from dismal preorders so far compared to console before them. This gen, most gamers are going to be on PC, on the living room or a desk, with a controller or mouse, most likely. I just can't see "that many people" being "that completely unaware and misled" anymore, but then again, this is the world of iPod people and zombies, so we'll see what happens)

PC on the other hand is a more lucrative market for them than both console combined. They get more money from steam games than they do on any retail, console or pc, PC market is bigger AND pays bigger percentage, so yea, the fact GTA was on a console, it being GTA (and not unknown, lower performing than expected RDR), it's a given it's on the PC, let alone all the staggering evidence. They can deny it all they want, but it's not a disservice to PC gamers, it's protecting console gamers from waiting for something that may never come to the next consoles. GTA Online may come with GTA VI, but nothing promises GTA V will port forward. But the promotional material alone promises PC is on the way, let alone post launch evidence.

Sophisticated gamers outgrow consoles. Console tend to bring on new blood, but once that blood knows reality from myth, they go to PC, and stop getting ripped off.

That's why PC grows and grows at the rate it does - people enter on consoles, some become wiser and learn the difference, and move on, while new noobs replace them, PC just gets bigger and bigger, basically. That's my story: I entered on Nintendo and switched to PC at the near-end of PS2, after doing both for a bit. Once PC really started showing the age of consoles in that gen, it was over for me, and it has been fun to say the very least watching my PC get better and better games while they keep looking the same on the console.

This generation? How will they hide these points? They won't be able to at all. There will be TV couch potatoes playing consoles sure, but any real, smart, sophisticated consumer has already turned their nose up to them unless they have legit concerns, like sharing a gaming rig and not wanting it to be their PC - kids on the console, friends on the console, don't break your PC. That's all that these consoles will really serve in the end. This is forward thinking, but it's pretty solid so far, but I won't "know" until middle of 2014, while many may not realize until much later..

I do not have the biggest beast of a PC, but I can't go wrong with this..it pretty much tackles any task thrown at it...exclusively GTA gaming, minor video editing, browsing>multi tasking and online poker! lol

mother board; MSI Z77A-G43

CPU: Intel i5-3570

video: Palit GEFORCE GTX 650 (OC Edition) 1024MB GDDR5

SSD: Plextor M5S 128GB SATA 6Gb/s | (will get a Seagate 2TB HHD soonish)

Memory: Kingston HyperX 8GB x 2 (16GB)

Power Supply: Aero Cool StrikeX 500w 80plus

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64bit

Controller: XBOX360 wired controller for Windows

But I'd definitely take this over any next gen console any day... back in the day I was a PS2 fanboy and ignorant about PC's. The console market is mostly for "convenience" that being play on the television in the living room..most consumers are clueless that they could hook up their LCD or LED television to their PC and experience the orgasmic graphics and power of PC....

Knowing what i do now about computers......I'LL NEVER EVER BUY A CONSOLE AGAIN LOOOOOL It's amazing how powerful and versatil PC's are!!! <3 my PC

great post btw!

Grew up with a PC and GTA, myself.

I mean the very first ones, too. Top-down style. Ah, i miss those times.

As someone who has been using a keyboard and mouse for everything and anything PC related since i was around 6, i can say that i could not wrap my head around a controller and why anyone (Even casual gamers) would pick it over a simple WASD keyboard.

I have an Xbox 360 and i bought it for Red Dead Redemption. I don't know if i should be ashamed to admit that i just couldn't play at all, at the start. I literally could not focus at all on the actual game with my concentration being completely occupied by attempting to comprehend the needless idiocy of such an imprecise device in my hands.

I sound quite ignorant and stubborn, i know. But it's just the way it is, lol.

I bet they did that just for marketing purposes. Good job Alienware.

And once again - f*cking speculations. Either they know something abou PC version or this is just cheap marketing step and they know nothing.

Yea, that's what I mean, but most probably it's fake (by fake I mean that it's not allowed by Rockstar themselves) and they just want to attract people.

Yeah, this is another "either ... or" situation, which occurred countless times over the past two years. So typical for discussion of GTA V. Absolutely nothing concrete.

But, still it's a bit "cheap" marketing trick for such a big company as Alienware

Exactly, I don't think a company as big as Alienware doesn't have any one responsible for checking the validity of the screen the designer used.

GTA V is not being ported. It's being developed side by side, however it could be by Toronto too, like Max Payne was.

Thus, there will be no excuse not to release V to the PS4 and XBO.

okay, next...

They said that in the comments or something? You know it's only bs and there's nothing more to it than that, but it's awesome to see.

But bad at the same time. People see it and they think they will NEED an alienware to play this game lol. You will need a sub 500 dollar PC to max this game, tower alone, but who doesn't have all the other pieces already, no matter how crappy the current tower is they don't realize they could just upgrade or replace and get MP for free and pay up to 90% less for games sometimes while developers still earn 40% more per license and listen to that record skip xD

Inspires me a little...

There is a market, the dell, the alienware (owned by dell), the hp, the emachines, what have you - the sales on those are declining rapidly. But it's not that PC adoption is declining, it's that building your own is being adopted because of how easy it is, and easier now than ever before, and cheaper that way, and so on - you don't pay bloated costs for all in one with crappy keyboard, monitor etc anymore, you spend a good bit on a monitor and do all the rest for like the cost of a console. Got a decent TV? f*ck it, use that and save even more lol. Especially if you only use your PC for a little bit and then now gaming - that's a total no brainer. If you're aware of media center pc at least, or the fact that you can do it with any PC, and media center is just a cool design that respects the same microatx form factors inside.

People are realizing "games are cheaper, more quality in visuals, more phsyics and props and simulation, more crowds, costs less to upgrade PC more often than I could upgrade console if I wanted to, they don't come out often enough"

Etc.

Console gamers are REALLY going to be sick of consoles when they start some kind of bi or yearly schedule releasing new ones on them left and right like iPhones or Androids. It's the only possible way they can stay at all attractive to developers as gamers continue to exodus over to PC and Mobile platforms (including tablets - and microsoft is about to crush the iPad as well, watch for that campaign)

And like 85% of mobile gamers (people think phones when I say that, you must not forget, again, tablets) game in the living room. Opting for and preferring that over console, because they can watch their tv and game at the same time.

And kids don't give a sh*t about joypads anymore ,they are all mesmerized by a touch screen for now, nintendo won't capture them, they won't give a sh*t about xbox or ps until they are 10 or 12, their parents' phones, their tablets, are far more suited and attractive to them at this time. Joypad buttons, two hands on two sets of buttons, they aren't equipped for it. Nintendo paddle maybe. But probably not either. Let alone typical joypads of today, with 6 dimensions of base motoring required to use them (shoulders, buttons, sticks, both sides, not including modifiers like hold X+L1 etc).

It really is dismal for consoles. I suppose they can be thanked in some ways, and scorned in others. But no matter what, where we are now, the gaming market is simply not going to be able to support closed and cherry picked hardware platforms and operating systems.

People already unlock each type that they can and do their own things on them. They don't want that sh*t. Android has found a market by being much more open in response has found a lot of success on multiple mobile sub platforms.

It's basically over for the console war. It's over. Comcast X1 puts a microsoft OS in your living room with or without the Xbox. And if it's proprietary and it's not running microsoft code, then it's a competitor that completely deflates any reason at all to own an XB1 instead of a PS4.

And the PS4 is crushed mid life this generation by its own successor the PS5, that goes the way of the dreamcast, as both the PS4 and PS5 take the final blows from the heretofore not mentioned SteamBox, third party steam box solutions, home made steam boxes, straight up media PCs and desktops ran to televisions, and the added uses mobile will surely have that the consoles will only offer so much capability that they choose to expose to developers etc.

When the announcement is made. We all should celebrate with group hugs, gifs, drinks and cookies!

And slightly off-topic, but I bet brian. is going to be the led-by of the V PC sub-forum. He reminds me exactly of CharmingCharlie who was also a PC gaming wizard and he went on to become the led-by of the IV PC sub-forum. Kinda ironic.

Wait... people are suggesting that the PC is the lead platform? GTA V was ported from PC to consoles?

This was kinda going around for.. 2 days now?

It kinda makes sense because by the looks of it they are gonna be betting on GTA Online now and PC has some technical advantages over consoles..

well ..can we assume then that the vehicle handling and damage on the PC version is going to be enhanced aswell?

Almost certainly not--but unlike console players, we'll be able to go into the handling files and mod them to our heart's content.

It's under 'see more'.

And you try doing that in the UK. A $500 computer can easily turn into something equaling £900+, due to price inflation and the 20% VAT. That might be fine for some people, but not everyone has thousands spare, doing nothing.

Almost certainly yes. I don't mind if the driving is arcady but I think Rockstar knows that console gamers are complaining about the driving, so there is a chance that they fix it on PC.

As long as the port isn't bad like IV's, the PC version will easily become the best version once it releases.

There are some genres which keyboards are terrible for: Racing and Fighting games being the two biggest culprits. Personally, I prefer controllers for all genres except shooters and RTS's, but I don't play those genres that much anyway. Also my opinion is biased by the two genres I play the most being the two mentioned above...

For the sake of an example, I cannot imagine anyone doing this on a keyboard:

Ah, I see, Dylricho so it is meant to be funny from the start, and not a comment, it's right in the description, thanks man.

And one thing I completely failed to mention though; Mac is more relevant than ever. Gabe Newell and Valve are trying hard to make OpenGL and particularly Linux more relevant in this sphere. Both Mac OS as a child of/and Linux are both OpenGL platforms and primed to take advantage of it.

How can you preach open platform on PC and then say "oh, btw, windows". And Apple has that problem ahead of it, but it's harder to foresee their role.

Microsoft will probably stick with DX for a while but definitely both MS and GPU manufacturers will ramp up their OpenGL support on windows and make it more mainstream than it currently is on that platform, you'll see serious consumer openGL platforms outside of FireGL and Quadro that will remain business targeted, or just really improved support on their current ongoing lines.

The games are leading all of that at this point, a role reversal, where the games followed in the past. Mobile hardware is striving to support the same horsepower that consoles are striving to support, and they are catching on way better than consoles ever can, because they do a lot more than the little bit more than gaming that consoles do. They are "little tablet PC's", windows tablet is about to rock out.

Games lead it now. These new devices want these high end experiences, and appeal to more people than just gamers, just like PC does, that console's just don't, but are trying to.

Rockstar's got their games on Mac now. They've got mobile games, and so do many developers. You hear the whispers "developers with nothing on mobile platforms are fools" and such - because these are about to blossom/bloom/a new breed of tv/pc, you see a lot of the main stuff already in the current hardware from item to item, but soon you'll start seeing features of a given device become standard for all devices in its class, the new platforms are about to mature in a lot of ways, while the PC chugs along merrily all the while.

When those Tablets get a bit more beefy, PC is gonna be getting 3 or 4 of their GPU's, put on a classic GPU shape and a new kind of cooler or something - these tablets are a huge deal because the smaller it is, and more powerful it is - you guessed it - the more of them you can fit inside of a tower LOL!

So it's like, Steam pops in, Linux, the big point I wanted to make, OpenGL, SteamBox platform (must be Linux based, or else you need to make your own and buy windows, they wont be giving you free windows licenses with every steam box), makes Mac support "a given" for titles in the future, already becoming a norm anyhow - because they all know, hey, support mac up front, because when steambox comes, you will basically automatically support that with ease as well.

See? Getting away from closed platforms, getting away from intrusive format DRM and instead using value-added techniques like server checks that mean something, server connectivity that brings friends together and makes for player progression and skill tracking and all of that.

Any closed platform that refuses to open up, basically will always live only as long as something else comes along a bit more open. Will it be when xbox is literally so open that it IS a PC that everyone understands? No. It will not take that long. Steambox will have every cross gamer (console and pc gamers) to tell their friends "seriously, BRO, GET a STEAMBOX if u can't get PC/don't want PC at TV, TRUST MEEEEEEEE, Get a steam streamer or a steambox, but do STEAM!"

And then they do buy one, and they get joypad AND keyboard and mouse and some form of much more open usability than consoles give, real browser, able to access operating system, even more usable than the brief time that PS2 and PS3 had limited support for linux.

Linux is much much nicer than it used to be. Steam is sure to have the best and most polished sh*t with any usability it exposes, because it's valve, and it's something they've worked on for a long time, to enter the living room and make Steam gaming (not even PC gaming, but Steam gaming) far more accessible.

oh oh oh... oh sh*t... you know what else will be devastating to consoles?

When Origin Box comes along and madden, battlefield, it's all on that, and not steam, and not consoles.

Then what? Get PC or "home server" for all your tablets (think of Wii U as a preview of future server based home computing), use both clients, instead of use two hardware units that together cost more than your PC does to upgrade, right?

Developers win. Corporate neckties lost a long time ago. They knew it. They restructured. We're seeing it all unfold now. Everyone is gonna be happy. Everyone is gonna pretty much play together soon, with fewer decisions to make about hardware, and more interactivity through shared platforms. It's gonna be awesome.

I know my posts are long, but they address sooooo many things between jumping around the forum and latest posts, so I'm just trying to dump as much info as I possibly can to start putting an arrow of light on what's ahead for the industry and for hardware, save for any drastic unforeseen changes.

MUCH of this depends on users, too. Users can drive those consoles for 20 more years under 12 more brands - but I think SteamBox, PC gaming, the internet, Mobile/PC nexgen interconnectivity (there's more nexgen than just consoles you know!), it's going to be a no brainer for most people that consoles are for their kids, who are not allowed to use their PC unsupervised because they will wreck it, or worse, find my porn.

EDIT: Above post! It's happening!

DOUBLE EDIT: Nevermind. Hopes and dreams crushed.

I understand. It's all personal preference, really. It just seems so odd to me specifically because i'm like a caveman when it comes to consoles.

I actually never play racing games. Ever, lol. Fighting games, though. The last one i touched was MK9, and it was great, to be honest. I enjoyed it even with my keyboard. Took a while to get used to for sure.

Well, I was exaggerating a little. Keyboards can work for fighting games, but the main problem is that you often have to press so many buttons so fast, and in several combinations, that most keyboards except dedicated gaming ones tend to flub up stuff. The motions are very precise. There are quite a few "keyboard warriors" in the fighting game scene but they take a lot of skill to use correctly.

The best controller for fighting games would be an arcade stick with an actual 8-way joystick and 4-6 buttons, but those cost a lot of money.

If we can do this:

Why cannot we do that?...

It's not something against consoles. It's just the logical interpretation of all of the data and info that you can catch up on in the last 30 pages.

Last of Us can't be exclusive if that's not the way they get the money from sony to make it.

Of course some games are first party exclusive - it's one of the things that helps them sell a lower quality and lower value item, and afford to manipulate the game industry in the way that they have for years.

If people go away from consoles, those companies would still end up being financed, and their games would reach a wider audience.

Just look at Sega and Sonic.
