R and 1 train, NYC WhiteHall station. Commuters would have to go down those stairs to take the train.

Still can't get back to Atlantic City due to the travel ban.. but I think it'll be lifted tomorrow though. School is also closed - until next Wednesday.

But yeah, the fury of the storm is and has been pretty much over guys. Hope everyone's safe and well, sandy was a bad one and will go down in the history books.

Looking at the aftermath of that huge fire that tore through Breezy Point, Queens, looks more like something you would see after a wildfire, not in N.Y.

Where homes once stood, is now a charred barren landscape.

I believe that was a gas main burst, not just the storm itself.

New York (CNN) -- Sandy's grim death toll mounted Thursday as survivors struggled to regain a semblance of the normalcy that the storm swept away this week when it struck the Northeast.

The storm was blamed for the deaths of 157 people -- at least 88 of them in the United States, two in Canada and 67 in the Caribbean.

The bodies of two children were found Thursday. The boys, ages 2 and 4, had been riding with their mother on Staten Island when the storm surge swamped their SUV, authorities said.

They were found Thursday morning "maybe a block or two from where (their mother) lost them," Borough President James Molinaro said.

Boats were beached on front yards in the Staten Island neighborhood of Great Kills. Several people were missing.

Also on Staten Island, John Filipowicz, 51, and his 20-year-old son, John, were found dead under debris in the basement of their home, which had been swamped by the storm surge, authorities told CNN affiliate WCBS.

Interactive: Remembering the victims

Sandy claimed at least 37 lives in New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters Thursday.

That toll included 13-year-old Andrea Dresch, whose body was pulled from the debris of a house on Staten Island that was swallowed by a tidal surge, authorities told WCBS. Her father was among the missing, SILive.com reported.

Victims fall to Mother Nature's wrath

While some mourned, others focused on the struggle facing the living -- as authorities in nine states worked to restore basic services such as public transit and electricity.

When it comes to electricity, Manhattan has become an island of haves and have-nots. About 530,000 customers were without power citywide, Bloomberg said, many of them south of Midtown's 34th Street. Parts of Queens and Staten Island also had no electricity Thursday. "Restoring power will take a lot of time," the mayor said.

New York's vast transit network remains hobbled. The Metropolitan Transit Authority said 14 of the city's 23 subway lines were running and a flotilla of 4,000 buses was attempting to take up the slack. For some, Thursday's commute into Manhattan from the outer boroughs took five hours.

Bloomberg predicted that would ease, as tunnels are cleared of water, power is restored to subway lines and ferries resume service.

Electricity or not: Tale of two cities

Getting water out of the tunnels is "one of the main orders of business right now," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

I just read that exact article on CNN.com, that is just horrible!

Wow, that is horrible.

May the victims rest in peace, and their families be given strength.

My heart also goes out to those rendered homeless.

But, now, to the recovery. I'm sure that the places that suffered much destruction in the US and Canada will be fixed soon, but I'm not sure about the poorer Caribbean countries. I think they lack the funds, resources and maybe even manpower to rebuild themselves. I'm sure some sort of charity will be started aimed specifically at them.

If you would like to donate, give to the American Red Cross' hurricane relief.

Does anyone know how this compares to Katrina?

Maybe we can make a GTAF donation and deposit it to the ARC, make a name for GTA players again (as we did with the Tesla Museum and the Child Play thing) and, more importantly, help those in danger out.

Not to hijack the topic, but while this is happening and people in the US are suffering and mourning, the same is happening in Iran. The 2012 East Azerbaijan Earthquake has killed 306 people and injured more than 3000 since it happened in mid-August. The US and UN have offered support and Armenia and Azerbaijan have taken part in the relief efforts.

It sure will...

Has the power been restored in most areas yet, and will the NYC marathon be held this Sunday?

Sandy and Katrina aren't even close. Sandy was a category 1 hurricane and Katrina was a category 5 hurricane. Money wise, Katrina did about $110 billion worth of damage whereas the current estimate for Sandy is only about $30 billion. Katrina killed 1833 people and the current figure for Sandy is about 170.

I'm watching cops arresting looters on the news. You knew that was going to happen. Give those mfers hard time.

I can get into Manhattan, but no 6 trains below Grand Central at 42nd Street.

Haven't seen gas lines like this since 1979 - s**t. No reports about any fights on these lines - yet.

Well, it was 5 days without internet and power but I made it. Just me and my candle. At first it was a humbling experience but it sure is a bitch not to have internet for awhile.

Finally, power, cable and internet is back. It's been a solid five days and that sure is a bitch after about the first 2-3 days of it. Of course my battery died on my quad and I couldn't ride it. Spend the first few days helping around my neighborhood cleaning up tree's cause they are everywhere. Schools been out from Monday-Friday this week. They also cancelled it next week from monday-wednesday.

What I don't understand is that our cable and internet went out after the storm.

Alright, I came back 4 hours ago and when I arrived home, it was completely wet inside. The first floor (my house is a sort of 2 floor apartment type of building with my aunt and cousins living on the second, and my family on the 1st..) had 3 feet of water in it, and my house is 4.5 feet above ground level (2 feet). It smells terrible, there's an influx of house centipedes plus other bugs and now they're all running all over the wet and dirty carpet. Thankfully, all the important (pictures, money etc..) and essential items were moved prior to evacuating.

But compared to what other people were dealing with around town, I seemed to have spared the worst with the exception of a few..

Oh and my front yard (including my neighbors) is covered with trash from the bay. I now have 4 free inflated soccer balls and a recycling bin.

Alright, I came back 4 hours ago and when I arrived home....

Yeah, I was wondering how my Jersey and NY GTAF brothers are fairing. I feel bad because we were right in the path(Philadelphia) and pretty much were spared.

It is kind of sad that it takes a natural disaster to bring people together.

Stay strong, stay warm.

For evacuation? I stayed with my cousins in Berlin, NJ around the Philly area. Oh yeah and trip, we didn't get much down in Berlin either which surprised me. The power didn't even go out too, not to mention the winds seemed like they were gusting up to 45-50 as opposed to what it was like down the shore..

I give my condolences to the families who lost loved ones in this horrific event.

Maybe we can make a GTAF donation and deposit it to the ARC, make a name for GTA players again (as we did with the Tesla Museum and the Child Play thing) and, more importantly, help those in danger out.

I'm in total support of this icon14.gif

By the way, did we lose ant GTAFers? I am only asking because If so I would like to pay my respects to them.

Leftovers from hurricane Sandy hits Iceland (Europe) lol. Lots of damage have been reported. Must've been some power in that hurricane since it has gone from South America and all the way to Northern Europe.

I live on Long Island, and boy it hit hard here. Not too bad where I live, but some parts got destroyed. Lost power for about 4 days. Bored as hell and it got damn cold. Worst part about it for me was all the food I lost due to the fridge not having power. I shouldn't be complaining since many people including people I know lost their homes and cars.
