Crumplet
While we all know R* are using RAGE for GTA V, it seems very plausible to me that R* are re-designing RAGE from the ground up, much like the way Ubisoft did for AC3. A 'bold new direction' can mean any number of things but what's for sure is that GTA V will certainly take the series to the next level, and a complete re-polish of their main game engine exclusively for GTA V would certainly justify that quote. Squishybubs
From what we saw in the trailer, that's not the case at all.
Johan
Pretty sure they're tweaking it a lot... not re-designing it.
Crumplet
From what we saw in the trailer, that's not the case at all. I meant in more of a gameplay aspect than graphically, but i do see what you mean. Most likely just a super upgrade.

I think they're just upgrading it more. Look at IV and compare it to RDR and MP3.
018361
My guess is that they will upgrade it to RAGE 2.0 or something similar.
VATG
i think they're using something new this time, and if not... its defiantly a upgraded engine thats for sure. imo the game is going to look a lot like Sony's 'Eight Days' here is what Jim Jagger formerly Eight Days character & animation director and a present lead animator at R* tweeted about a month after he stared working on Rockstar North in 2009: Looking forward to a fresh start in Edinburgh. Playing around with the old Eight Days material makes me really excited to start again... https://twitter.com/jimjagger/status/3612976799 for some reason the mods has decided to lock my thread... see more info here: http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=495997&hl=
meson1
I reckon the biggest changes they could make would be 'under the covers' addressing inefficiencies that existed in GTA:IV's version of the engine in order to free up valuable processing cycles. That would then make room for more sophisticated visible features such as improved graphics, physics and AI.
faizanali
From what we saw in the trailer, that's not the case at all. Graphics isn't everything a Game Engine has all the things necessary for a games 1.Physics 2.AI 3.gameplay 4.Graphics and much more
Ash_735
RAGE is a constantly evolving engine, GTA IV isn't even the first build, Table Tennis was, it is a far cry from what it was when it ran GTA IV/EFLC compared to today with Max Payne 3, especially on the PC and PS3 fronts, where others games were just ports on those platforms whilst RAGE mainly focused on the Xbox 360. JaggySnake
I'm not too knowledgable about this sort of stuff but I don't think they'd switch to a new engine. The most I think they'd do with it is tune it up, polish, tweak and update it. All that sort of carry on. The animations in the trailer look much better than IV. The way the people move it just looks more natural and smoother. We won't really know until the game is out because the engine deals with things like Artificial Intelligence, Physics, Animations etc. It will be an improvement over all previous Rockstar games. Exactly. Thanks for the post. Because this is one of the main reasons why I believe that GTA V will have optimized versions for each platform (360, PS3 and PC). It started with Max Payne 3. The RAGE engine will be the same like in MP3 just even more improved. But of course it's not all about graphics.

Maybe that was what they were referring to. It's usual for them to say things like that at least the ubisoft guys, as far as we know rockstar isnt like that so they hopefully meant something else. PedrosEnemy
why redesign the engine when they have been improving/tweaking it for 5 years, it would be suicide for gtav to have redesigned the engine, especially now rockstar have a good understanding of RAGE
