K^2
I would've thought he'd slow down due to the fact that helium is lighter than air so down here, where there's more air, it would be able to rise quicker, whereas near the stratosphere the air is thinner meaning there's less air for the helium to rise above meaning it'll slow down. I am aware that I have worded that terribly but I can't think of any better way to put it right now. They are using a balloon similar to meteorological ones. They hold the same amount of helium throughout, and the balloon expands as the pressure drops. That means the displaced mass of air is constant, giving you almost constant buoyant force. At first, the balloon slows down because balloon expands presenting a higher cross-section area for drag. But higher up, the decreasing density of air reduces drag, and the ascent speeds up. At some point, the balloon will not be able to expand anymore, at which point they'll start bleeding off helium, which will reduce buoyancy until the altitude stabilizes. That will be the maximum altitude from which he's going to jump. Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns. That will be the maximum altitude from which he's going to jump. That makes sense. I didn't take the displacement into account. Cheers for explaining it, man It's starting to get rather exciting right now. It's getting closer and closer to that final climb. @ Kirsty: Mine goes all choppy every now and again but it's not too bad.
