peanutbutterlover
Um, okay... I guarantee that like 90-95% of V's map is still under-wraps, yet you think it's dumb. I prefer both. While I love the hustle and bustle of the city, driving around in a top down Audi R8 on curvy roads with nothing but trees interest me. To be honest, it's beyond dumb to me that anyone would have a problem with R*'s decision on countryside and with countryside itself. You've played IV, you know what happened. it is not 95% 'under wraps'. if u've seen the trailer enough and the screenshots it's easy to notice that it's just LS, surrounding hills w/ countryside, docks & military base and that's ALL. u can see it from different angles. they'd showed us if there was any other relevant part there. MosquitoSmasher
After RDR....animals really are a must yeah. It's so amazing to see how realistic and lifelike the wildlife is in RDR, it's really something i'd call an achievement, to have them looking and behaving so realistically. It would be a huge addition to a GTA game.

crispypistonx8
just pointing it out: instead of rural environment, i'd suggest DESERT. there's a lot of easter eggs and all this mystery crap that are miles more funnier than the countryside itself. desert with a military base. Desert would be ok but you can't have LOTS a sand with out having sand dunes an at this point in time the physics involved in that reach beyond current console limits. Out of curiosity where do you live ? I'm thinking you're problem might be that you cannot relate to this in game situation. jesus, i didn't understand a tidbit about what u're talking about.. i'm from canada. and this thing about 'sand physics' has nothing to do with weighting data in the game.. just plane territorial sand and particulates, highest points' base on rocks Er let me try again. When I asked where you live I was referring to what type of environment you surround you're self with,I'm guessing you live in a major metropolitan area. My point is if you haven't known anything other than the city it might me difficult for you to imagine fun that can be had in the wilderness. An you think the countryside is boring what about a endless flat patch of sand, ya that's got fun all over! An yeah sand dunes can be made and are the only redeeming aspect of the boring dessert but if you're tires, crashes and explosions can't displace sand then there's no point in having sand dunes or dessert. An sorry about any mistakes im on my phone

BlackLightning
The country side is going to be awesome. Did you not see that waterfall? How about that bridge that looks purpose built for base jumping and crashing your car in exploding fashion. How about dirt trails through the woods to barrel down with a truck or SUV. That's just a start. The countryside of V is going to be one epic playground.

AuSsIeThUnDeR36
If you think the countryside is going to be boring, I just had this thought for an event in multiplayer Imagine a battle themed between two teams involving Rhinos, jeeps with mounted miniguns, grenades being hurled, players charging at each other across a grassy field, or in a wooded region. It could be a modern day Civil War! Or just limit the weapons to knives, rifles and hand guns only to add the realism. It would be awesome fun

MRPG500
seriously, i really think it was a dumb decision that R*'s taken putting this 'countryside' huge area, instead of a more populated one. i really don't get the point of running around rural non-populated areas, between trees and lakes, and it seems we'll have a lot of it on V, as we had back on SA but this time just ONE metropolitan city. so, do u guys enjoy it or would prefer another city instead? do u guys think R*'s made a mistake putting it so relevant? And who told you the countryside wil lbe dead like in San Andreas, idiot

Finn 7 five 11
It's really hard to describe why i like the countryside. I remember playing San Andreas many years ago (Makes me sad a little thinking back) and there was literally nothing better than driving through the countryside with "I love a rainy night such a beautiful sight, i love the feel of the rain on my face, and the rain on my lips, iiiin the moonlight shadow" ^For some reason doing that was just so much fun, also exploring the countryside was great, reminds me of when i was a kid i would climb the hills and venture around, find cool things, exploring the city is fun too, but it gets boring just looking at concrete after a while. It was also a great setting for missions, you could do more outlandish crazy things in the countryside, like your pilots license missions, rally like races, chilliad challenge, running people over with a combine harvester! The countryside is great, it seems boring when you think about it blandly, but it can actually be great fun, and i can only imagine the environment being much more fun with the new physics and engine the game runs on, imagine rally cars actually handling like rally cars? And the winding mountain roads would be brilliant for drifting. Damn i'm excited for this game. Edited October 8, 2012 by finn4life
Kifflom112
Just had a thought about countryside. Wouldn't you want to own some house in the countryside in V. Get spectacular views and stuff? And who wouldn't like being able to drive around in a nice convertible while speeding through mountains and lots of tall trees?

018361
I like to drive fast in the countryside and just get away form that "big city life" every once in a while. Plus it is nice to be able to drive without having to slow down and turn. So yes i feel it is a very important part, especially if they include Wildlife in GTA V. You will get to see the beauty of the wilderness and have a nice quiet place to kill a hooker without witnesses.
i am a girl on the internet
I wouldn't consider it to be any more "nothing to do-ish" than the blocks upon blocks of city in IV (or SA, or VC, III, etc). There are places throughout the city that have "things to do," whether they are scripted actions or player-made (such as bowling being scripted, or drifting being player-made, regardless of the street type). The same thing would apply to the countryside; there will most likely be scripted activites (such as the dirtbike races we saw in the screenshots) and player-made activities (BASE jumping, for example). I never understood the argument of the countryside having "nothing to do" (in regards to SA) when the majority of the suburban/urban/metropolitan area in any GTA game is just as dead. Now, if it came down to seeing block after block of urban/suburban development (IV), or a wide range of desert/countryside (RDR), I'd have to go with the countryside. Of course, V's going to have a nice mixture, so most of us will be happy.
Kifflom112
Ever play Burnout Paradise, it had city and countryside. I can't describe how special the feeling was to just easily drive away from the loud city and into the quite and very scenic countryside. It was epic really. I want that feeling in V, you get tired of all of the loudness or buildings/cars everywhere, you just take your favorite car, hell even a sh*t car, drive away and the feeling changes. I don't know, if the feeling was great in even San Andreas, I'm sure it will be awesome in V.
Miss Darko
The thing is, a city in a videogame is the same as an empty countryside in a videogame: it's still just a bunch of polygons, textures, and code. What matters is what you get out of it. And different people are going to feel, well, differently. I want a large city, but I don't want it to be the entire world. I do want an "outside" of the city to exist. And if the countryside were small, it wouldn't feel real. So the countryside needs to be there, and it needs to be big. But the ultimate point here is variety. A heavily populated city is a great environment, but it will start to feel claustrophobic. When you get tired of it, it's nice to have an option to leave that city and explore more natural environments. And when that starts to get old, you can go back to the city. There's few types of environments that are as complementary to one another as a metropolitan urban city and a natural countryside, so having both really does fill most of the needs us gamers have for keeping a game-world fresh for an extended period of time, which is necessary for a game like GTA. I mean, it is ok as an artistic choice to have the environment be claustrophobic. It worked in GTA IV, because the city felt imposing and enclosed, and I'm sure that's what they were going for. Likewise, in GTA V I believe they are going for a more open and free world, and for that to work having the outside natural environment is necessary, even if there are no other cities in the game for that countryside to lead to. But that also means that it needs to be extensive. So for these reasons I think their approach in the map works out pretty well. And there does turn out to be another city in the game then that adds another purpose for it. And the design for the countryside in GTA V I think will be more similar to Red Dead Redemption than GTA: San Andreas, in that it will be highly detailed and also full of specific locations with uses. It won't just be empty, there will be various small towns strewn about, landmarks, destinations. I'm sure it won't just be dead space, any more so than the city. bowling...?
How about a multiplayer mode where the first person to earn the most money from stunts wins. The stunts would like in San Andreas where you get money and its determined by how high, far, and how long you stay in the air, etc.. Don't know how much money it should be up to though.
