iCaramelBird
Okay, I've seen a lot of people talking about how their may of been something that happened in the production of GTA, and I think I may of come up with something. Keep in mind, I'm a 14 year old boy, I have no idea how the development process of games go, and I don't pretend to be an expert. Okay so before Ballad of Gay Tony, R* began developing (writing the story, thinking of the city, discussing, etc.) and after Ballad of Gay Tony, they began full work on GTA V, yet their main focus was Red Dead Redemption, only a small portion of the R* team was still developing GTA V. When they finished with Red Dead Redemption, their main focus was again GTA V. Team Bondi was finishing up L.A Noire. So R* were the publishers of the game, and started making trailers and advertising L.A Noire. There was still ongoing development for GTA V. But at the same time, Max Payne 3 was being made and so their main focus was to work on Max Payne 3 going back to a small portion of people working on GTA V. Not only this, but we're not even sure if they're still working on Agent, but due to the fact it hasn't been announced it's cancelled then during all this they must of been working on Agent somehow. I guess that's it, basically they've been very busy and have gotten themselves split from Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3 and Agent so GTA V has had some changes during development. Just hoping this may make everything clear from now on Thank you for reading!

Knife
We know they were definitely working on Agent after the release of GTA IV and we've seen some assets from developers that had dates up to as late as early 2010. As far as I can work out, they worked on Agent for a couple of years after GTA IV's release and then switched to GTA V instead in early/mid 2010. So the game was about 2 years into development when we saw the trailer and 3 years now.

Andreas
Wonder what changed. Why they went over from Agent to GTAV It's just speculation but I think that Rockstar realized that they need GTA V because of the hopeless long development of Red Dead Redemption, L.A. Noire and Max Payne 3. Well, here are articles about the development of these three games: http://nukezilla.com/2010/01/15/rockstar-m...ead-redemption/ http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/14/source-m...fering-from-mi/ http://gamasutra.com/view/news/35457/Direc...Allegations.php I think this was the reason why they "stopped" the development of Agent and decided to make a new Grand Theft Auto sequel. At least that sounds pretty plausible to me. GTAForums Crew Chat Thread - The Sharks Chat Thread - Leone Family Mafia Chat Thread
Frantz Fuchs
Keep in mind not all R* games are made by R* North. Yeah but Red Dead and Max Payne 3 both had addition help from Rockstar North. So I think after TBoGT, they started development of GTA V but not all the team worked on it... But after MP3 came out, they started full dev with all the team. Short before GTA IV was delayed Rockstar announced that Rockstar North on a new game called Agent. So after GTA IV they worked on the TLaD and TBoGT DLCs for GTA IV and before this they already worked more intensive on Agent. They've helped a bit on Red Dead Redemption, L.A. Noire and Max Payne 3 as well. If a game is in the last months of its development then all Rockstar studios help the studio that is finishing this game. That's the reason of the mismanagment. This and the lack of communication between Rockstar New York and all the developer studios. LA Noire took 7 years to develop, and the game wasn't mind blowing as expected. What worries me is how they get the quality right... for eg, if Rockstar San Diego help with GTA V, how will it be up to par with the Rockstar North parts. As for the actual delay of the game there are 4 scenarios a) they have hit a wall and are fixing it up b) It's currently being fully tested c) It's done and dusted and they are making copies of the game for consoles and pc d) They will wait until another Take Two conference to boost share prices, then announce the launch date Who knows what they up to! What worries me is how they get the quality right... for eg, if Rockstar San Diego help with GTA V, how will it be up to par with the Rockstar North parts. (I hope that makes sense) L.A. Noire was mainly developed by Team Bondi. Rockstar helped with the development in the last three years. That game would probably not exist if Rockstar wouldn't have helped. Team Bondi had an even more serious mismanagment than Rockstar which was the reason why they have filed for bankruptcy. Rockstar said by themselves they would've expect more profit from L.A. Noire after this long development. Red Dead Redemption made big profit for Rockstar even if the development costed about 100 million dollar. According to vgchartz the game sold about 11.81 million copies which is good. TakeTwo estimated to make 725-925 million dollar in the fiscal year when Red Dead Redemption was released. In the end they made 1160 million dollar so they'have underestimated the performance sales of the game by a lot. IF Rockstar San Diego help out then I think they'd help with the RAGE and Euphoria engine because they're the masterminds in it. They work every day with this engine so they can handle it at best. It'd be even good if Rockstar San Diego helps out at the development of GTA V. meson1
My theory is twofold. Map size. Creating the map is the single largest task in the development of any GTA game. Rockstar have admitted that GTA:V's playing area is their largest yet. That being the case, the game taking longer to develop makes sense. Revamping RAGE. Making GTA:IV 'fit' on the main console platforms performance-wise was seriously difficult. I think several things had to be cut and I think they struggled to make what remained run properly with the minimum of lagging. Bear in mind I'm talking about performance here. The graphics rendering, the physics, the AI, the Euphoria animation etc, etc. I think they struggled to fit that lot into a 'game loop' running at 30 frames per second. I suspect the overall fundamental architecture of the software may have been to blame. If they want to make GTA:V better and more ambitious, they'd have to find ways to free up processing cycles so that they could fit in better graphics, physics and AI. They'd have to take the way the software is architected back to the drawing board to find ways to make it all (RAGE, Euphoria, the Bullet Physics etc) run more efficiently. More efficiency makes more room to add more improvement. Of course, this is entirely speculative. We can only hope that we will see these kind of results in the finished product. My twopennyworth. At least that sounds pretty plausible to me. Agent was announced as an exclusive for the PS3. This requires a financial arrangement with Sony because Sony wants a full-size game but it's only going to sell on one platform, at least initially. The deal commenced in 2007 when an unnamed exclusive game by Rockstar North for the PS3 was announced. This was an obvious attempt to repair relations because GTA IV involved an exclusive DLC deal with Microsoft that Sony was not even told about until Microsoft announced it in 2006. In 2009, in between the releases of the two GTA IV DLCs, Sony and Rockstar announced that this exclusive game would be Agent. Look at all the things that happened after this deal to make it less valuable to Sony. Rockstar North has been repeatedly distracted by their own delays and, worse, other studios' delays. GTA IV delayed GTA TLAD delayed RDR delayed, Rockstar North brought in to help L.A. Noire delayed, Rockstar North brought in to help Max Payne 3 delayed, so many studio involved (including North) it's called a Rockstar Studios production. None of that was supposed to happen. GTA IV was supposed to be out in 2007 and its DLC done a year later. Agent could have been done by 2010. It may even have been intended to be fall 2009 when the deal was first made. In 2007 the PS3 was less than a year old. The point of an exclusive is to get people to buy your console then buy more games for your console. Now we are approaching the end of this console generation, so this is much less valuable. This is why, in 2011, Jack Tretton of Sony said he was no longer sure Agent was a PS3 exclusive. This was big news because there is no way he cannot know all the details of the publicly announced facts about Agent from 2007-2009. If it's no longer exclusive, the deal fell apart and Sony is not paying for this exclusive. The financial rationale for Agent no longer exists. Markhayzy
Grand theft auto is the backbone of rockstar. It's what made them, it's the fans favourite game and most likely the developers favourite too. Sure they have other franchises that are awesome, but GTA is their number 1. The top creative people at Rockstar are centrally involved in all their games. There's only so much bandwidth, evidenced by the fact that Rockstar North could not handle Manhunt 2 and GTA SA/GTA IV at the same time, and apparently could not complete Agent in the 2009-2010 window of opportunity while also being pulled in many other directions to assist with Red Dead Redemption, L.A. Noire, Max Payne 3, and finally, having to switch gears to full GTA V development. There's no question the company depends on GTA, but it also depends on developing non-GTA games so it can make money every year. It seems to me that while there was probably some GTA activity all the time, it was on the back burner for about two years within 2009-2011.
