Capt_Cola
I've been taking in a lot of the 007 coverage over the last year. There have been some really interesting documentaries, articles, interviews and what-not doing the rounds. The 007 series from the books to the films have become an important part of British popular culture and many people hold the characters, stories, music and weapons very closely to their hearts. Bond is great fun, it's also very much about violence, murder, sex and misogyny, car chases, explosions, villains, torture, sharks, lasers, poisons, terrorism, security services and the dodgy things they can get away with. And that's what makes it great - yet Bond is part of the Establishment, older generations recall fondly reading the books as adolescents and the last year we've all been speaking about 007 with such adoration. It's loved and revered and seen as something very British. But we're not so keen on GTA. It's a different phenomenon, of course, but the content is very similar. Maybe we'll all be celebrating 50 years of GTA one day - with the protagonist of the day parachuting into the Olympic stadium, then jet-packing out of it, then jacking a car and crashing it into the side of bus, which is subsequently TWOC'd and driven off a cliff. I know we're always drawing comparisons between different media and GTA - but I think it's an interesting time with the release of GTAV following on shortly after the 50 years of 007 celebrations. What do you think the parallels are? Are there double standards? Will GTA grow and evolve over the decades like Bond? When someone criticises GTA next year, will you be ready to say "What about the Bond love-in last year???" Ahh, whatever.

The Gardener
The difference is. GTA is always about criminals benefiting from the story. And every GTA character has different characters. If Tommy Vercetti was the main character in every GTA he'd be as famous as James Bond.
Capt_Cola
Dafuq? Excellent point. One I had yet to consider, until now of course. Thank you.

But I don't think GTA is in any way shape or form like 007. They are two worlds apart and two entirely different franchises. – overeducated wonk who fetishises compromise

Degrees
The difference between Bond and GTA, Bond is a spy and the characters in GTA are criminals. James Bond kills for his country sure he may have the odd revenge LK and the latest Bond movies. But he has always put his country before himself something that no of the main characters in GTA have done. What they do is for money even the nicest guy Niko did his criminals for his own selfish reasons.
AuSsIeThUnDeR36
Nah GTA V will be like an Austin Powers movie. Because it's quite nutty and groovy baby yeah
Meezarawcks
Agent > New 007 maybe? This is most likely a better comparison. I See what OP means but GTA is mainly based on fictitious US cities and really has no parallels with the Bond franchise. I do hope someday it grows to be as revered as the Bond series and so far it seems to be headed in that direction.
Mig10
Bold new direction, Robin Hood style, still be a criminal but try to do not only something good but work against the police MP3 style.
Vanzant
James Bond, Robin Hood nor even the tooth Fairy has anything to do with GTAV.
