Hello fellow GTA fans and players

I've been thinking for some time about this possibility, about having a GTA set in the 70's.

I wonder why Rockstar haven't created a GTA during this time line yet, as I think the 70's could offer a very nice setting for a GTA.

But I would like to see what you GTA fans think about this possibility: Would you like it if R* creates a GTA set in the 70's (with all the possible "advantages and disadvantages" it implies, like having no cellphone and such)?

And how would you like it to be made? What city would be the best one? What would be the main "theme" or substance of such game? A Mafia-based story, or some gangster action?

Share your thoughts about this!

P.S.: I decided to add a poll just to collect people's opinion on this subject, just to see if a GTA set in the 70's would be (or not...) welcome by the community.

I doubt it. Assuming that it'll be set in the IV era that features cell phones, the internet, etc. not including those things would be a step back, gameplay-wise

The 70's? Sweet. cool.gif

All jokes aside, I would love to be able to experience crime life during the 1970s, with all of the Vietnam War paranoia and panic, as well as its great pop culture with music and media. As for what 'theme' I would prefer, maybe being in control of a troubled former-hippie, with bad blood with higher criminal powers. I can't think of whole plot now, but something like that could be interesting to play.

Cell phones can easily be substituted with payphones and home telephones, in addition to the Internet being swapped with newspapers and news programs. I don't recall no technology being a problem in RDR.

That's because it was a separate franchise, people knew it took place in the wild, wild west, where cell phones didn't exist. GTA is associated with cars, guns, and since IV, phones (not as big as the cars and guns, but you'll see where I'm getting at). Look at SA and LCS for example. SA showed all this amazing stuff, and LCS lacked most of it, which resulted in poor reviews.

VC was set in '86 and no cell phones nor was Internet was included and it's considered one of the best games of the 2000s. Same goes for SA, the cell phone was barely used, in addition to no Internet and it was fine without. III too!

That's right, I think that R* has to create a GTA in the 70's, as it is a time setting with so much "potential" and interesting subjects...

Just imagine, for example, Las Venturas, in the 70's... all those Chevrolet and Ford look-like cars and such cruising around ("muscle car" lovers here xD), the drugs, the Vietnam veterans and their war "traumas" (our protagonist could even be a war veteran or something... ), the growing hippie community, the music... hell, it would be a great GTA in my opinion!

But those games came out before IV, where the cell phone & internet were greatly expanded on. Without them, it would be a step-back from what Rockstar accomplished in IV.

How in the world...?

Just because certain aspects of an award-winning game are cut out and replaced with a variant to suit the decade (or time period) better is not a step in the wrong direction. With what you're saying is, we have to keep going on further and further in time and stay in the modern age simply because there weren't any cell phones in say, as far behind as pre-2000?

Totally agreed, man. OK, the cellphone thing was a success in GTA IV, I have to admit it. Rockstar did really good with it but, I don't see a GTA with no cellphone as a "step back" in any way.

Obviously, IF Rockstar ever creates a GTA set in the 70's, of course cellphones will not appear, as well as the Internet... but face this not as a step back, but as a challenging opportunity for Rockstar to impress us all once again and to create new ways of improving the gameplay, WITHOUT the cellphone or Internet.

Remember this: R* must not stay stuck in the same sh*t over and over again, or the "opposition" will slowly start to surpass the Grand Theft Auto brand, as well as the fans starting to feel sick and tired of the series.

A GTA set in the 70's would be the perfect challenge for Rockstar in every way, at any time, and it would be a "breath of fresh air" (taking a time off the "modern days" theme...), and I'm pretty sure that, at the end of the day, we would have another award-winning game coming out, a masterpiece.

The 70's have lots of potential...

Couldn't have said it better myself. icon14.gif

I totally agree with your points about how Rockstar shouldn't stick with the same routine and should mix it up a bit. If every new GTA game was set in the same exact year it was released, it would be the same game in just a different location. Just like there are things that exist today that didn't exist back then, things existed back then that don't exist today. Variety is the stepping stone to a great GTA title. If you give us another biker with a similar story to Johnny's, in the bin it goes. If you give us another mute hired gun with a similar story to Claude's, off the roof it shall. Nobody wants to play the same styled type of game.

As _GTAFREAK_ has already mentioned, the 70s does indeed have a lot of potential.

I don't know.

Red Dead Redemption had no cellphones either, so it is possible.

I still don't understand why some of you keep comparing GTA to RDR...

RDR is RDR, GTA is GTA.

In the 70's there were no cellphones, so what? There were lots of newspapers, phones, radios, even some TVs started to appear... do you guys think that R* doesn't have the skill and knowledge to use all these things to improve the gameplay the same way it worked with the cellphone?

Don't be so skeptical guys, I'm pretty sure R* would be able to get around it and build a very nice GTA within such setting.

And I don't know why but, I just feel that someday... we'll wake up and we'll see that R* had just announced a new GTA to be set in the 70's... but that's just me.

Wrong?! Is it 'opposite day'?! He's absolutely right!

RDR has nothing to do with GTA. Sure they share some common aspects, but doesn't every game? Just because they are both made by Rockstar, it doesn't mean they are practically the same series. RDR has its own thing going on and so does GTA. One takes place in the wild west during the turn of the 20th century and the other is more modernized. _GTAFREAK_ is trying to convey that Rockstar, regardless the time period or place, can most certainly create a game with all criteria up to that date in time, as well as having certain features carried on and others dropped.

The London 1960's is the closest you'll get to a GTA 70's game. There was The Warriors that took place in 1978-1979, but... We;re talking GTA here, not R* in general...

The Notorious MOB

I voted "No, I think that's a bad idea" however although I don't think it's a bad idea I don't think they will do it. I think the only reason the set previous GTA games in the past was to parady the culture of those times and/or give a backstory to other games in the series i.e. the stories games. For this era at least I think every game will be set after the other.

It has the same style as GTA IV. Also a modern open world game.

What I tried to say is that Red Dead Redemption proves that Rockstar can create a modern open world game without mobile phones.

That's right. Despite the fact that RDR and GTA share a very similar type of gameplay somehow, they are two separated brands that were built over very different "conditions"... basically, something like this:

RDR is meant to be a game that ALWAYS takes place in the Far West, and this particular series is condemned to be kinda "stuck" in the time (like, all the games of this series need to be set during the 20's or so, because that's the time when the cowboys and the Wild West was really "wild").

But GTA... dude, GTA is a whole different thing. It is a series that was built over the main concept of being free to do a lot of things, criminal things mostly as it is a game about crime after all, but not just that, GTA has a bit of almost every game, like a bit of car racing games, mixed with a bit of FPS/shooter games, along with a bit of RPG and such.

That's what defines GTA, this miscellaneous mix of possibilities and the freedom to set the games of this series at almost any time line we want, as long as we keep it a true GTA game with all these things, along with an excellent story, improvements on the gameplay and a faithful recreation of the real world that completely defines the setting of the game (time, place and society in general).

And yes, I do believe that if Rockstar one day decides to create a GTA in the 70's, they will know exactly how to make an amazing game out of it.

Rockstar has the skills and knowledge to do it.
