What are the best racing games?

I am wanting to buy a racing game because not played one for ages, but not sure which to get.

The ones I have looked at on youtube today are Forza, Need for Speed, Dirt, Project Gotham and Burnout.

They all seem great fun and hard to pick which one to go for as they all very different, are there any other good ones I may have missed.

I would like a game that has many different tracks, in many different environments and using many types of vehicles

So what are the best racing games you all think?

XBOX 360 I play on.

Forza 4 surely. NFS games on PS3/360 suck, so if 360 plays older games, try NFSU and NFSU 2.

Well the racing games that I've played and had good moments with and lasted a long time on this gen were

Burnout Paradise (you might be late though)

Gran Turismo 5

Midnight Club: Los Angeles

Wow.. that's pretty much it... Every other racing game I got wasn't really unique and were just kinda boring.

Oh, actually just noticed you're on 360 so you won't be able to get GT5, but from your description, GT5 would be perfect.

It has a bunch of tracks, and lots of vehicle variety.

Such as GT500, NASCAR, Rally, JGTC, Go-Karts, Drifting.. the list goes on.

And it has enough cars alright. Over 1,000 different cars.

I find NFS games pretty cool, not sure how it is on consoles, i play on pc.... you should try Need for speed shift, NFS Hot pursuit, The Run, i found that these are the best ones, but i'm no expert...

I also had a blast playing Midnight Club 2 (dunno if they released it on xbox though)

What genre are you more interested in mate? A simulator or an arcade racer?

Not sure because I like aspects of both. The main thing I want is variety.

Street races, desert races, off road races, stadium races.

Tuners, sports cars, sedans, hatchbacks, dirtbikes, superbikes, monster trucks, pick up trucks, quads

-Gran Turismo

-Forza Motorsport

-Midnight Club: Los Angeles.

I don't like the rest, many racing game franchises were ruined this gen.

For Simulators on Xbox: Forza, NFS Shift.

Hardly simulators.

If you want to find an all-out simulator you'd have to play on PC, there's a couple out there which I don't recall the names but you wont find a simulator on a console (GT5 is not a simulator FYI).

They're pretty old, but Midnight Club 2 and 3 were always the best racing games, 2 especially.

I had another look at Forza 3 and saw that it is not just stadium races, so that was going to go top of the list

But then I saw how much of a DLC obsession they have and I hate games that try and bleed you dry by releasing low value DLC content

It is also the reason I start to only buy games that are at least a year old and all DLC finished and most games then release a "game of the year" edition or equivalent that includes all the DLC.

Its annoying because the new Forza game Horizon looked almost the exact type of game I want, but the inevitable drip feeding of DLC means I will only consider getting this in 2014 at earliest.

NEVER get a current gen NFS game.. Undercover, Hot Pursuit, etc were kinda sucky.

The only decent ones this gen so far are Shift and Pro Street.

For last gen, NFSU/NFSU2 and Most Wanted, Carbon etc were epic.

But for good times, Burnout Paradise is a must have. But as I said, alot of the epicness was everything being new and stuff, so you'd be a bit late now.

I recommend a PS3 along with GT5, personally. So much variety. NASCAR, Rally, Go Kart, Drifting. F1, GT500, JGTC, with over 1,000 cars.

I am curious what is so bad about the NFS games on 360.

I seen a few playthroughs on youtube and the more recent ones such as Hot Pursuit seem much better than the earlier ones.

Not because of graphics but because it seemed more realistic driving physics.

Sneakerhead.

I was waiting for this topic.

I will put the best games in the series that they are in.

Need For Speed:

Hot Pursuit 2 (Same as PU)

III Hot Pursuit (Same as PU)

Porsche unleashed (PS1/2 or PC, PS1 has better car list and handling while PC has tuning.)

Most Wanted Original (Very good game for PS2.)

Shift

Shift 2 Unleashed

Underground (Had great tuning options and a memorable soundtrack.)

Underground 2 (had awesome car list and tuning upgrades, great soundtrack.)

High stakes (Very good game for PS1/2 or PC.)

Gran Turismo:

GT5 (Very good game, alot of fun and pretty good DLC.)

GT4 (I have possibly some of my best memories from this game.)

GT3 (Same as GT4)

GT2 (Very good car list, races, RMs and tracks. Sounds are good too.)

GT1 (Can't say much abot this since I hav not played it in a while, but I have to say that I liked this game alot.)

Other Racing games:

RFactor (Very high amount of mods and very good mods.) How many people can say that they drove 80s/90s F1 on lemans in a videogame!

GTR2 (Is kinda boring without mods, but once you have a good list of mods such as FIA 97 or BPR, you will keep going to that game.)

All Toca games

DT Racer (Had VERY good memories from this game, infact, I will be buying it off of ebay.....if I can find a copy.)

Burnout 2, 3 Revenge and 1.

Midnight Club 2, 3, 3 Remix and LA.

Forza 2-4

TDU 1 and 2

Grid

With these games, you will have a GREAT time! biggrin.gif

Who cares if you lost respect for me lmao. This game is boring and pointless, and theres no story and the game feels dead while driving.

My favourite racing game is NFS Most Wanted by far, I had some great times on that game.nhas a huge range of awesome cars and circuits and a decently large selection of racing modes such as sprint, drag, toll booth (TT) and the speed camera one that I can't remember the name where you have to reach a certain speed within a short distance.

Second favourite would have to be Gran Turismo 4, it has an even bigger selection of cars and tracks (including Nurburgring Nordschleife and Le Mans) and is probably the best racing sim out there for it's respective time of release. In my opinion they took a huge step down with GT5, it has terrible physics and only certain cars even have dynamic vehicle damage and they go by the name of Premium Cars, and you'd be lucky to find a premium vegphicle released before 2000. sad.gif

The best online racer I've played by miles was Driver San Francisco. It's just so much fun. Though last I checked almost nobody was playing it. Which is a shame. Forza 4 is a brilliant racing game so that's a must have too. The sound of the cars in Forza is just awesome.

With a variety of off-road vehicles, I think the more recent Motorstorm titles such as Arctic Edge or Apocalypse would be suitable?

Moreso Apocalypse because I think it had the mix of terrains you were looking for and has beyond the scope of vehicle variety.

Need For Speed World also is a great online racer. There's almost always a tonne of people online, no matter what your time zone is.

No wonder you think NFS Underground 2 is the best racing game then. I still remember the original concept of NFS back in 1995. It was all about fast exotic supercars and racing as hard as you could in exotic locations all around the world.

The worst thing they ever done was throw some crappy Fast & The Furious knockoff story into the mix IMO. I don't no, but I still think the last "real" NFS was Porsche Unleashed. The last NFS I played was the new Unleashed.

NFS isn't what it used to be, but I'm old fashion I guess. The originals were some of the best racing games on PC/PS1. They've tried going back to its roots, but it's just not the same.

No wonder Need For Speed series is the best racing game for me. Although it has suffered some major drawbacks after releasing Most Wanted, still it is the best racing game for me, and I hope the next NFS Most Wanted 2012 would make a resurgence to the NFS series. Also mate, regarding about your post wherein you forgot the name of the challenge to get a bounty by accumulating a certain speed, it is Photo Ticket.
