Would you like another "Roman" type character?

Now, before ripping me apart for even daring to ask this, let me say that I think Roman was a big part of IV's charm. Yes, I said it: Roman was an integral part of the IV experience.

He's one of those charmingly annoying characters in any and almost every game. The one you'd like to punch brutally but then feel like sh*t afterwards: not unlike Oblivion's Adoring Fan, Morrowind's Cliffhangers, San Andreas' OG Loc, etc. It's one of the things that, years after you're done with the game, you're gonna talk about with your buddies, laughing at how you'd be in the middle of a heated gunfight with mobsters only to be asked if you want to go bowling. Hell, it has its own meme.

I believe he walks a fine line between being annoying to an extent that makes it funny and being throw-your-controller-at-the-nearest-television annoying. An example of the latter would be San Andreas' Denise; anyone remember her? You'd go on a date with her, your relationship stat would rise, then you'd have fun, y'know, PLAYING THE DAMN GAME only to have her call or have a prompt pop up saying that your relationship with her is falling, therefore nullifying the 5-10 minutes you just spent taking her digital ass to Cluckin' Bell. She was more clingy than all of my exes combined and multiplied by total sum of their ages. Going back to Oblivion: anyone ever tried fast-traveling while near a body of water? I'm sure you've gotten the "You cannot fast-travel while there are enemies nearby" prompt, spent a good 10 minutes looking for the enemy (who is not on the map) only to find that it was a f*cking mudcrab. THOSE were annoying. THOSE were just plain frustrating.

But things like Roman and the Adoring Fan, while pretty annoying in and of themselves, never made me personally want to turn off my Playstation in frustration. Everyone loves throwing the Adoring Fan off a cliff; seeing his excited, cone-shaped face go flying at 30 mph towards the nearest pointy rock was hilarious. And the best part? There were no repercussions; no stat decreases, no senseless searching, none of that: he'd die, you'd revive him or just wait it out until he respawned. Like Roman's horribly-timed phone calls, it's pure, unadulterated fun.

So, what do you guys think? Do you agree with me, do you not care, or do you think he's no different than SA's Denise and his type of character should be left out of V?

I vote fore if he calls more often

Why??? That would make people hate the game more.

One of my big regrets in GTAIV was that you had to live with a frigid Irish Girlfriend, or a waste of space like Roman, why they couldn't have both died tragically is beyond me... >.>

Roman is a one of a kind character and they'd do him no justice to try and replace him with another that act's a bit like him.

Roman was a good character he fit gta iv story like a glove an the only thing they should change is how frequently npc's call the main character.

I remember the first time I played the game, I hated Roman so much. I hated him AND Niko, I thought their accents were way too over the top to the point where they sounded like a lame parody, like the old "WE ARE TWO WILD AND CRAYZEE GAIZ!!!" sketches on SNL. Roman was the worst though, there was just no way I could take him seriously.

But I dunno, by the end of the game they didn't seem ridiculous anymore. The first time I finished it I got the, uh, let's call it the "Roman Ending". And it really bummed me out. I ended up really liking him, I'm not joking when I say I think he's one of the best video game side kick characters ever.

The constant phone calls were annoying, but when I found out how to ignore them without damaging the "friendship rating" or whatever it became a complete non-issue.

His type of character was awesome, that lightened up the mood and really made the GTA feel come back. As annoying as he was, I hope his type is present in V. The ability to kill him / her at the end would be okay though...

So I decided to meet Roman for some bowling. Drove by and shot him multiple times in the face. Left his ass in the hospital when he called me to pick him up. Another Roman? Fine. I guess I can spare some more bullets.

I did the same thing to Denise on San Andreas yesterday.

Imagine she's the printer.

And wow lol thought a lot more of you guys would be on the hate Roman side of the fence.

Roman was a very funny character, although the only thing I hated about him was he forced you to do date Michelle. Other then that, the relationship with Niko and Roman was very in depth. The problems they both faced..

I hope I see another "Roman" type of character. Annoying, not so forceful and just full of problems the protagonist(s) has to face.

He was one of the only things providing some comic relief to the story. Without him, like him or not, the story would have been really, really depressing.

Good thread idea. I f*cking hated Roman, I hated his character and I hated the fact that he was so prominent.

It felt like Rockstar attempted to make Roman that goofy relative that you love to zing but he was just annoying and his relationship with Niko was forced

I feel like Brucie was more successful at being thta character that added comic relief.

The relationship between Niko and Brucie was very natural and grew as you played, But you were practically forced to like Roman from the start and I feel like it really hurt the story

sh*t sorry for double post

Algonquin Assassin

I loved Roman. His light hearteness helped ease the mood IMO. I still laugh when at the start they go back to the safehouse and he falls a sleep at the table then Niko says "Roman, Roman? ROMAN ARE YOU SLEEPING YOU FAT f*ck COME ON!!!!". Gets me everytime. lol.gif

Without him I don't think the story would've been as good. I kind of disagree about Brucie. His character has always come across as random to me. The bond between Niko and Roman felt genuine. Brucie just felt like the comic relief thrown into the works for no real reason. Brucie's relationship with Niko wasn't as pivotal to the story. Take him out and not much is lost well to me anyway.

I didn't like how he was introduced. It was basically in the middle of the sh*t hitting the fan with Faustin and Dimitri. I think he would've been better off introduced when Algonquin was unlocked. The timing was just so awkward.

Oh look, another poll with insufficient options!

Saying that you liked or didn't like a character because of how often he called you to hang out is stupid. That is a game mechanism and has nothing to do with the character.

On to answering the *topic title*: Although I 'loved' Roman, I wouldn't like the same thing in Rockstar's 'largest and most ambitious game' (quote from Rockstar's announcement for those who don't know). I'd prefer something new, yet still awesome! smile.gif
