So after playing V for two weeks, I got bored of it and put in IV. Forgot how much better this game is. Also if you want to explore a borough, I suggest varsity heights.

I really love Varsity Heights, it is so different from all other parts of the game.I just started to explore that area once I crashed my coquette there. Lol

Hmmm nice bike

I've begun playing GTA IV again recently, and I have to say, it's a beautiful game. I'm impressed with how detailed everything is. I took Niko for a walk around Hove Beach at the start of the game and kept the radio on Vladivostok FM, it's really atmospheric. GTA V's map is pretty detailed too, but I don't think I ever got as immersed into Los Santos as I did with Liberty City. Liberty City feels less fake.

On a bit of an unrelated note but something I've still wanted to say because I've read about people saying otherwise, I think that the game feels more and more like a period piece as the years go by. With the old cellphones that couldn't do more than make calls or texts, fears of terrorism and various other Bush-era references, Katt Williams' appearances, the internet parodies of Myspace and Perez Hilton and the Snuggie and MTV suing YouTube, the website about tablet computers and how they aren't fully appreciated "yet," and of course no car models or songs from after 2008, it definitely feels a little less modern day and more like the late 2000s when looking at everything now. It's just another thing that adds to the game's atmosphere, you could say it gets better with age!

Sorry to quote your entire post, but yeah IV feels historic in itself. It's crazy because it parodies the late 2000s vibe so much, it made me realize how far we've came as a culture.

About the phones, I can identify. I just booted up TBoGT and I had a smile when I saw Luis' Motorola Razor look-a-like phone. When I was younger, I remember those phones were awesome! But now everything is about smart phones and tablets. Everything you said pretty much hit the nail on the head.

We have come far in terms of culture and technology, and it shows in GTA IV. They really had a great depiction of life in the late 2000s in America. Things have changed quite a lot since then.

I actually had a phone like the one Luis had, it was some kind of HTC model I think (maybe a cross between an HTC and a Razr phone), or at least it looked like the one I had at the time, which I found cool.

I read the "Science of Crime" ad on that Ringtone. I just laughed. Even though I liked the sh*t of CSI: Miami and it's other spinoffs, it was a guilty pleasure of mine.

And I have it as my ringtone just for laughs. Man, I do miss CSI: Miami!

Well, we can lock this topic now, nothing left to be said after that.

I kind of feel the same way too. Even though GTA IV was set 6 years ago it already feels like a time capsule IMO. It's not as nostalgic as VC or SA, but I sense a period piece from it everytime I play. I mean seriously who uses internet cafes anymore much less has a computer with one of those giant, block like monitors?

Niko's phone (before he gets the one from PBX) reminds of one of my first Nokias I got in 2003/2004.

I would safely say that GTA IV has become an "Unintentional Period Piece". Despite this I still enjoy the game as much as I did when I first played it.

Cheers.

Liberty city is the only city in a video game I've ever experienced that truly felt alive, Los santos is too spread out and not demes enough to work or get lost in, it feels almost boring to drive through in the city but only surpasses when it comes to the mountains,

The only game that city wise was in the same ballpark was Watch_Dogs and that isn't even story or gameplay wise in the same universe as GTA IV

And don't get me started on how much of a more superior story IV has compared to V

Reading this post has only reminded me how much I loved LC, now all we can hope for is a return to a locale reminiscent of it For the next instalment

I gotta stop reading this thread. Everytime I read it, I want to play IV, but I physically and literally can't play. Only 2 days a week, and some weekends I gotta work, too. I graduated college in August 2013 and finally got my first job in August 2014, one year later and now am swamped with work. It's not your typical 40 hours a week Mon-Fri type of job. I may be traveling and staying some places for a couple days, a week, sometimes even 3 weeks to a month. A lot of f*cking overtime and money, I'll tell you that. There's employees who hit 80-99 hours in a week already, it's very demanding. However, now there is literally NO time to play GTA anymore. I am so glad that I did all the games from March until two weeks ago.

I knocked out III, VC, SA, LCS, VCS, TLaD, TBoGT, and so close to being done with IV, yet so far away, cuz I still have the most time consuming nonsense left, Stunt Jumps and Pigeons. But it's time consuming and time is not on my side anymore, so it f*cking sucks ass.

I even wanted to re-do GTA V again, but I have no clue when I will be able to start that and progress with that. I'll have 8 out of 9 games complete shortly, the 9th is just GTA V that I gotta start and finish one of these days. But I reckon the longer I wait, the more time and chances people will discover stuff in V, and I can then do it in my next playthrough.

But I am always am thinking of Liberty City and want to play this game for some reason. I can't believe how much I hated it in 2008 and now it's the polar opposite and I am an addict to Liberty City.

It's because you've seen the light. Now if we could just turn you into a full fledged GTA IV fan and get you away from SA the transformation would be complete. :p

To be honest I used to play the sh*t out of GTA SA whilst IV sat in a cupboard somewhere, then one day something happened where I could no longer play SA. I don't know what the correct term is but I found it 'painful' to play. I still enjoy SA's soundtrack/radio stations however. So I re-installed IV and after a while I stopped playing SA. I had seen the light. I guess I discovered all the nuances that made IV better.

Same for me. Well to be fair, I enjoyed the game during my first play-through in 2008 but as time went on I stared to dislike the game. I guess for me was that I got caught up in the V hype that I started to forget just how good IV truly is. At least now I can appreciate how good of a game IV is and still have an amazing time going back and replaying it. As I'm typing this I have an urge to start another story but this time do it "realistically".

Little off topic, but did anybody else love to hang out with Dwayne just to hear his stories? Such an amazing character and hearing him tell me about his past and depression just felt so... real. Hard to explain but does anybody else feel that way?

Hmm, I gotta try that. I've made Roman and Packie liked me 100%, and gonna try Dwayne. TBH, I don't understand why people are so negative about the random phone calls. It makes the world a whole lot more living.

In some ways Dwayne and Niko are kindred spirits. They both have very similar past life experiences such as;

both of them having abusive fathers and additionally being betrayed by past acquantances.

Cheers.

I don't get it either and I agree with you on it adding to the world. It seems some people really like to exaggerate when discussing the phone call system. They never called THAT much to the point where it bothered me. If anything, I enjoyed getting random phone calls.

To be honest, I prefer GTA III's Liberty City.. It somehow was far more ambient than IV's. But everyone has his/her preferences so..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uqpCVsoLfY

Nothing wrong with preferring GTA III's LC.:)

LC in GTA III is a classic and I'll never forget it as long as I'm a GTA fan.

Personally I found III's Liberty City too clautstophobic for my liking. I will however give it credit for trying something that has yet to be repeated in any other setting;

1. A working lift bridge (the Shoreside Vale Lift Bridge). I killed so much time in the game nudging NPC drivers and watching them kamikaze into the water. In V there is a lift bridge as one of the approches to the Port of Los Santos but it is a static map asset.

2. An extensive underground road tunnel (The Porter Tunnel) with multiple portals to the surface that has yet to be repeated (albeit with more realistic interchanging). The Booth Tunnel is a successor to the PT but it is very simple by comparison.

Cheers.

I'm once again impressed with how fun it is to run from the LCPD. First, I was doing "The Snow Storm" last night and there were several cars after me, and not one of them was able to match my speed and ram the sh*t out of me. They all followed behind and tried to come up to the side to either PIT me or box me in. It felt like a realistic police chase. And today, I was doing Dwayne's first mission and I had a wanted level during it. I ended up having to run from the cops on-foot and on a motorcycle, and my health got consistently lower because I crashed and flew off the bike, and then when I got away with the money for Dwayne, I realized that if it had been GTA V, I would have been killed already. The cops can hit me in GTA IV, but they haven't got the accuracy of Robocop.

Lethal Vaccine

It's because you've seen the light. Now if we could just turn you into a full fledged GTA IV fan and get you away from SA the transformation would be complete. :p

Hahaha, indeed. The main reason I like SA, though is due to the abundance of the proof vehicles to collect and the absolute rediculous ways on obtaining them. The game itself is just an "ordinary GTA game" to me. It's not really THAT special, but because I am almost literally obsessed with collecting proof vehicles, SA wins by a landslide. But tbh, overall as a game, putting proof vehicles aside, IV is my favorite. f*ck the 200 Pigeons, though. That's the worst f*cking thing ever...

Little off topic, but did anybody else love to hang out with Dwayne just to hear his stories? Such an amazing character and hearing him tell me about his past and depression just felt so... real. Hard to explain but does anybody else feel that way?

100% Agree Here.

Hmm, I gotta try that. I've made Roman and Packie liked me 100%, and gonna try Dwayne. TBH, I don't understand why people are so negative about the random phone calls. It makes the world a whole lot more living.

Because I am so focused on stats and 100%'ing these games, I actually have ALL characters, including girlfriends at 100% Like, Respect, and Fondness. Dwayne is 97% Respect and 89% Like, so he's the ONLY one I need 100% for still, and I gotta still do 50 Stunt Jumps and 200 Pigeons, so I reckon he'll call me one of these days and I can get him to 100%, too...

I don't get it either and I agree with you on it adding to the world. It seems some people really like to exaggerate when discussing the phone call system. They never called THAT much to the point where it bothered me. If anything, I enjoyed getting random phone calls.

Also, how f*cking hard can it be to pick it up (to avoid the DISlike), accept to hang out (to avoid the DISlike), and then call them back and cancel (to avoid the DISlike)?! I mean, if you want to keep the stats up and not have them decrease, yet you don't feel like hanging out, all you gotta do is do what I said above. You can call them back and "Cancel Plans" on the phone, and the likes/respect won't decrease. People are just idiots and surely overexagerate.

Nothing wrong with preferring GTA III's LC. :)

LC in GTA III is a classic and I'll never forget it as long as I'm a GTA fan.

I prefer IV's Liberty City, but III/LCS Liberty City is the most known map for me. I know it inside and out. Very small, and easy for me to navigate. The feeling of III's map and peds, etc make it spectacular. One of my favorite games, and also one of the most challenging for 100% Completion, too. Well, it IS the hardest one for me actually out of III, VC, SA, LCS, VCS, IV, TLaD, TBoGT, and V.

Payne Killer

After lowering my contrast just a little in game, I have to say it looks a lot better. Especially the look of rain at night, and the early morning. LC is growing on me again, really love turning up my volume and listening to the ambient sounds.

Algonquin Assassin

I can't believe how much I hated it in 2008 and now it's the polar opposite and I am an addict to Liberty City.

Congrats, you are now the 136th person to be possessed by SOL. Enjoy your day.

I guess I have that effect on people. :p

The other day I was walking around Firefly Projects and I decided to give Dwayne a call for some backup since I saw some M.O.B members roaming around. Once they arrived I let off a few shots and all hell broke loose. It broke down into a shootout on the street with myself and Dwayne's boys against M.O.B, until the cops arrived. When the cops arrived, not only did Dwayne's boys direct their fire at them, but so did the M.O.B members. So now we have Myself, Dwayne's boys and M.O.B members against the LCPD. This shootout (which was amazing) lasted a good 5 minutes and the end resulting in everyone getting gunned down in the middle of the street. Only in Liberty City.
